The discipline Genetics has a fundamental role in the academic and professional training of medical students. Thus, it is necessary that their perception be regular or good during the basic, clinical and boarding cycles of the course, so that good professional conduct can be based and to condition impulses to the patient’s health. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the perception of the students of the Medical School on Medical Genetics during the course and professional life, in a University Center of Belém, Pará, Amazônia. This is a quantitative research, where a questionnaire was applied prepared by the researchers with open and closed questions. The collected data were analyzed and tabulated in graphs and tables developed through Microsoft Excel 2017. We interviewed 120 students from the 1st to the 12th semester of the course, where 90% stated that they had difficulties in the course of the course, 62.5% had their knowledge expanded after the realization of the same, however, 75% considered that the discipline was insufficient to address the entire length of the subject. It is suggested, then, that students may have greater contact with the subject, either in the form of courses or extracurricular internships.

The appeal of psychiatry as a speciality varies around the globe for a number of reasons. In a majority of countries, medical students are reluctant to choose psychiatry and this has become a much more evident matter of concern in the past three decades. The factors, which affect the choice of psychiatry as a specialty by medical students include external and internal stigma, quality of teaching of the subject as well as research exposure and clinical experience during placements. In many countries, a placement may last only two weeks and the exposure is to patients in asylums, whereas a majority of psychiatric conditions are treated in primary care. In addition, personal factors such as the ability to deal with openness and ambiguity play a role in the choice of speciality. A study in 19 countries to explore factors prior to entering medical school, experiences in medical school and postgraduate in the choice of the subject showed that those medical students who are likely to choose psychiatry fall into three major categories:– those who had decided prior to joining medical school that they wanted to choose psychiatry;– those who decide during medical school placements and, finally;– those who select the specialty after having finished their medical school training.The latter group has two further subgroups: one, which falls passively into psychiatry and another who make an active choice to take it up. Among 2198 students who participated, 4.5% of the sample planned to become psychiatrists, with a further 15% considering it as a possible career. Women (21%) were more likely to consider psychiatry than men (16%). Key factors associated with choosing psychiatry were personal as well as based on teaching/learning experiences. In order to recruit into psychiatry, better teaching, exposure to common mental disorders and small research projects may prove to be helpful.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Medical Genetics (GM) has become a recognized medical specialty, with important concepts and approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of many common and rare diseases. Genetic diseases follow inheritance patterns, and may be autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, linked to the X chromosome or Y chromosome, or multifactorial. The aim of this study was to determine the profile of patients treated at a GM outpatient Clinic at a University Center in Belém, Pará State. Data were collected from patient records, seen between 2014 and 2019, using the researchers’ own questionnaire, with data analyzed and tabulated through the Microsoft Excel program. A total of 101 medical records were analyzed, with predominance of females (51 patients). In addition, most of the care was for children (41.5%). Regarding ethnicity, only the variables “white” and “brown” were observed, with a higher prevalence of brown patients (78 of the total). Also, Belém was the most prevalent city in the naturalness of patients (61 records). The specialties with the highest number of referrals to the GM outpatient clinic were Endocrinology and Neurology, with Neuropsychomotor Development Delay being the most frequent diagnosis. In 42 medical records, the age at diagnosis was not present. Of the 101 patients, only 16 had genetic counseling and in the remaining 85 there was no record on this information. Finally, maternal age at birth was not found in most medical records (absent in 61.38%). Thus, developing a profile of the patient seen in a GM outpatient clinic is important, since it becomes possible to identify any failures in the service provided, in addition to adapting the doctor-patient relationship.

A systematic literature review (SLR) from 1991 to 2019 is carried out about EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) excellence model in this paper. The aim of the paper is to present state of the art in quantitative research on the EFQM excellence model that will guide future research lines in this field. The articles were searched with the help of six strings and these six strings were executed in three popular databases i.e. Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct. Around 584 peer-reviewed articles examined, which are directly linked with the subject of quantitative research on the EFQM excellence model. About 108 papers were chosen finally, then the purpose, data collection, conclusion, contributions, and type of quantitative of the selected papers are discussed and analyzed briefly in this study. Thus, this study identifies the focus areas of the researchers and knowledge gaps in empirical quantitative literature on the EFQM excellence model. This article also presents the lines of future research.

The author's approach to the empirical study of the peculiarities of self-development of a person has been  considered. The criteria of self-development as a subject activity have been characterized. Its indicators have been  given.  The  psychological  resources  of  personal  self-development  have  been  singled  out:  the  need  for  self- development as its source and determinant; conditions that ensure its success; mechanisms as functional means and  conditions  for  its  implementation.  Their  essence  has  been  revealed.  The  need  for  self-development  has  been  determined by the actualization of the characteristics of self-development (self-activity, vital activity, development of  self-consciousness) and has been occurred when the content structure of the individual consciousness and the  transformation of semantic entities changed. Conditions of self-development has been defined by mature I of  personality, openness, tolerance to the new, the presence of a conscious goal of self-realization and active life  strategy. Reflection, self-regulation and feedback have been considered as mechanisms of self-development. The  methodical approaches and means of studying the peculiarities and factors of the development of the subject of self- development in adolescence in the process of professional training have been offered, and the results of their  integrated empirical research have been highlighted. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of the level  of actualization of self-development resources among students, discovered with the author's diagnostic method  "DCPSD" (Dispositional Characteristic of Personality of Self-development). It has been proved that psychological  resources as a set of possibilities of development already exist in the psychological reality of a person. It has been  shown that the dominance of the level of self-development resources’ actualization of the individual (and their  combination) can be correlated with the dimensions of the individual psychological space, indicating the individual  peculiarity of the personal self-development organization. It has been noted that, at the same time, actualization,  strengthening and harmonization of all psychological resources of a person self-development, enrichment of its  relations with the environment and other people, and increasing spirituality is necessary for the implementation of  progressive conscious personal self-development. У  статті  розглянуто  авторський  підхід  до  емпіричного  вивчення  особливостей  саморозвитку  особистості. Охарактеризовано критерії саморозвитку як суб’єктної діяльності, наведено його показники.  Виокремлено психологічні ресурси особистісного саморозвитку: потребу в саморозвитку як його джерело і  детермінант; умови, які забезпечують його успішність; механізми як  функціональні засоби і умови його  здійснення.    Розкрито    їх    сутність.    Потреба    в    саморозвитку    визначається    актуалізованістю  характеристик саморозвитку (самоактивність, життєдіяльність, розвиненість самосвідомості) і виникає  при зміні змістової  структури індивідуальної свідомості та трансформації смислових утворень. Умови  саморозвитку  окреслюють  зріле  Я  особистості,  відкритість,  толерантність  до  нового,  наявність  усвідомленої   мети   самоздійснення   та   активної   життєвої   стратегії.   Як   механізми   саморозвитку  розглядаються рефлексія, саморегуляція та зворотній зв'язок. Запропоновано методичні підходи і засоби  вивчення особливостей та чинників становлення суб’єкта саморозвитку в юнацькому віці в процесі фахової  підготовки, висвітлено результати їх комплексного емпіричного дослідження. Особливу увагу приділено  аналізу  рівня  актуалізації  ресурсів  саморозвитку  у  студентів,  виявленого  за  допомогою  авторської  діагностичної методики «ДХСО». Доведено, що психологічні ресурси  як сукупність можливостей розвитку  вже існують у психологічній реальності людини. Показано, що домінування рівня актуалізації ресурсів  саморозвитку особистості ( та їх поєднання) можна співвіднести з вимірами психологічного простору  особистості,   що   свідчить   про  індивідуальну   своєрідність   організації   особистісного  саморозвитку.  Зазначено,  що  в  той  же  час  для  здійснення  прогресивного  усвідомленого  особистісного  саморозвитку  необхідна   актуалізація,   взаємопосилення   і   гармонізація   всіх   психологічних   ресурсів   саморозвитку  особистості, збагачення її зв’язків із навколишнім середовищем та іншими людьми, підвищення духовності.

Background: This research was birthed in 2017 during a trip to Lusaka, Zambia, with the purpose of offering fourth-year, medical students attending the University of Zambia, School of Medicine, lectures on psychology topics as part of their clinical studies.  Students were also offered brief therapy sessions where they could process thoughts and feelings causing them internal struggles.  The subject of offering counseling on a regular basis was randomly discussed with the students.  From these discussions the need for this research became evident, with the intent of becoming the launching pad to brainstorm the most effective ways of developing a plan to offer counseling services for all medical students attending the University of Zambia School of Medicine. Methods: An-experimental research design, consisting of completion of a 12-item questionnaire administered by paper and pen. The inclusion criteria were the fourth year, medical students attending the University of Zambia, School of Medicine. Results:  The student responses revealed that most of them had little to no experience with counseling services, but a strong desire for them. Discussion: The goal of this study was to simply establish a need for an on-campus counseling service, the need of which has been established by the very students who would benefit.  With the acceptance of this need, the future plan is to explore the different ways in which this need can be fulfilled with minimal costs to the Medical School Program. Conclusion:  This study is the first step towards identifying the needs of the medical students and sets the ground-work for further research into the specific areas of need and mental health challenges.  More specificity in the area of demographics of students will produce a more comprehensive picture of the areas of concentration for the therapists offering services.

Increasing data suggest that for medical school students the stress of academic and psychologicaldemands can impair social emotions that are a core aspect of compassion and ultimately physiciancompetence. Few interventions have proven successful for enhancing physician compassion inways that persist in the face of suffering and that enable sustained caretaker well-being. To addressthis issue, the current study was designed to (1) investigate the feasibility of cognitively-basedcompassion training (CBCT) for second-year medical students, and (2) test whether CBCT decreasesdepression, enhances compassion, and improves daily functioning in medical students. Comparedto the wait-list group, students randomized to CBCT reported increased compassion, and decreasedloneliness and depression. Changes in compassion were most robust in individuals reporting highlevels of depression at baseline, suggesting that CBCT may benefit those most in need by breakingthe link between personal suffering and a concomitant drop in compassion

BackgroundEmpathy is a key health care concept and refers to care that incorporates understanding of patient perspective’s, shared decision making, and consideration of the broader context in which illness is experience. Evidence suggests experiences of doctor empathy correlate with improved health outcomes and patient satisfaction. It has also been linked to job satisfaction, and mental wellbeing for doctors. To date, there is a paucity of evidence on empathy levels among medical students. This is critical to understand given that it is a key point at which perceptions and practices of empathy in the longer term might be formed.AimTo quantify the level of empathy among UK undergraduate medical studentsMethodAn anonymised cross-sectional online survey was distributed to medical students across three universities. The previously validated Davis’s Interpersonal Reactivity Index was used to quantify empathy. The survey also collected information on age, sex, ethnicity, year of medical school training and included a free-text box for ‘any other comments’.ResultsData analysis is currently underway with high response rates. Mean empathy scores by age, sex, year of study and ethnic group are presented. A correlation analysis will examine associations between age and year of study, and mean empathy sores.ConclusionThese data will help to provide a better understanding of empathy levels to inform the provision of future empathy training and medical school curriculum design. Given previous evidence linking experiences of empathy to better health outcomes, the findings may also be significant to future patient care
