Purpose – Inquiry teaching has been suggested as one of the important approaches in teaching chemistry. This study investigates the inquiry practices among chemistry teachers.   Method – A combination of quantitative and qualitative study was applied in this study to provide detailed information about inquiry teaching practices. Questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and field notes were used. 23 chemistry teachers participated in this study. 92 chemistry lessons were audio and video recorded, which subsequently were transcribed in verbatim. By applying descriptive statistics, the frequencies and percentages of each category in the observation instrument were determined.   Findings – Most of the questions made by the teachers and students were closed-ended questions. Teachers in this study practised wait-time after asking questions. Meanwhile, it was found that most of the students’ questions were followed by answer given by the teacher and the sequence after students’ answers was followed by explanation from the teacher. Students were merely following teacher’s explanation or procedures in text book before carrying out experiment. The mean of students’ ability to provide further explanation was very low.   Significance – A model of inquiry teaching based on verbal interaction was proposed as a guide for chemistry teachers to implement inquiry teaching in order to be in line with the Malaysian National Science Education Standards.

Chemistry should be taught using inquiry approach to enhance understanding of concept of phenomena investigated. The way teacher implement inquiry teaching in chemistry classroom is vital as it affects the teaching and learning process. This study was carried out to investigate verbal interaction of chemistry teachers who applied inquiry approach in their chemistry lessons. Twenty three chemistry teachers and their pupils were involved in this study. Data collection method was mainly based on observation using Observation Instrument in Inquiry Teaching through Verbal Interaction (OIITVI), which was developed and modified based on previous existing classroom observation instruments. Even though the teachers claimed that they practiced inquiry, findings from this study showed that teachers are still dominating interaction in chemistry classroom. This research also revealed that percentage of teacher’s question is lower compared to teacher’s statement. Besides that, mean percentage of pupils’ questions has increased as observed in this research compared to previous researches. Nevertheless, teachers’ questions and pupils’ questions were found to be of low order thinking questions. Silence or confusion category contributes 37.0% of verbal interaction occurred in chemistry classrooms. Implication of this study showed that teachers should move towards creating inquiry-based classroom with focusing on quality pupil talk.

AbstractH.A.R. Tilaar emphasizes to the importance of education based on culture, because education is process of culture. Therefore, between the education and culture has been greatly relation, because the education is not able to be separated from culture that has reflected and grown up dynamically in Indonesian society.The purpose of this research is to determine how the education based on culture according to H.A.R. Tilaar’s perspective. The object of this research was H.A.R. Tilaar’s Perspective which concerns to the education based on culture.The approach of this research was literature review. The source of the data were a text book written by H.A.R. Tilaar and other literatures related to this research. The technique of analyzing data were the content analysis of the text book written by H.A.R. Tilaar and other literatures.The result of this research are : (a) H.A.R. Tilaar conceptualizes the education as an culturing processes; (b) the education process is an culturing process through the interactive process between teachers and students; (c) it is necessary to the Government of Indonesia to correct the National education concept by proposing several aspects such as ; (1) the basic value of education; (2) to notice the function of sociological education; (3) the relation between culture and education; (4) the education as The Agent ofChange, and (5) to get the equalization of education opportunity; and (d) to grow up the creative and adaptive thinking toward education phenomenawhich always move dynamically in the environment of the Indonesian community which has its complexity.Keyword: Education, Culture.

Textbooks are one of the essential types of materials that are extensively used in English as a second language classroom instruction. The current study tries to evaluate the textbook SUNRISE 9 based on six categories. This study intends to cover how those categories are represented in SUNRISE 9. The categories are the layout and design, activities, skills, language type, subject and content and conclusion. The present study aims at answering the questions about SUNRISE 9 from teachers’ and students’ opinions and finding out whether there is a statistically significant difference between the teachers’ and students’ responses with regard to the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook which are used in language classrooms in all basic schools in the Northern Iraq. Two data collection tools were carried out in the current study. The quantitative data were obtained using questionnaire for teachers and students with a total number of 375 9th grade students and 40 9th grade teachers. They were chosen randomly from Sulaimanyah city in the North of Iraq. The qualitative part of the study, semi-structured interviews were held among 13 teachers to gather more neccessary data. The findings reveal that the teacher participants have negative opinions towards most of the sections of the textbook and some others have not stated any opinions but the student participants generally have positive opinions about SUNRISE 9. For this English textbook SUNRISE 9, an empirical evaluative study and an in-depth method evaluation are also suggested to be conducted to find out more important results.

Discriminatory practices related to menstruation affect the social, mental and physical wellbeing of girls in many low-and middle-income countries. We conducted mixed methods research in five districts of Nepal to explore how menstruation affected girls’ ability to fully participate in school and community life. We conducted 860 structured interviews, 26 group interviews and 10 focus group discussions with schoolgirls in rural areas,14 semi-structured interviews with girls’ mothers, and 10 interviews with health teachers. Girls in all districts experienced social, material and information barriers to confident menstrual management. Menstrual blood was believed to carry diseases, and girls’ movement was restricted to contain ritual pollution and protect them from illness, spirit possession, and sexual experiences. Taboos prevented girls from worshipping in temples or in their home, and some girls were not allowed to enter the kitchen, or sleep in their home while menstruating. Teachers and parents felt unprepared to answer questions about menstruation and focused on the maintenance of restrictions. Teachers and students were embarrassed discussing menstruation in school and classes were not question-driven or skills-based. Gender disaggregated teaching of menstruation and engagement of health facility staff may have positive effects. Community participatory approaches that engage girls, their families and the wider community are necessary to address harmful cultural practices. Cross-sectoral approaches to provide clean, private, safe spaces for girls and increased availability of preferred materials could enable confident menstrual management.

The main purpose of this study was to explore teacher-student verbal interaction in the secondary level classes using the Flanders Interaction Analysis system (FIA).  Its findings and conclusions may stimulate teachers at the secondary level to improve their teaching behaviour in order to maximize students’ learning.

As the nature of Extensive Reading (ER) emphasizes the reading activity, most ER follow up activities are developed to support the act of reading. This might neglect the fact that reading can also be a stimulus for creative and imaginative writing. Although ER has a potential role to develop students’ L2 writing, not many have explored it. This preliminary study investigates a writing project undertaken as a post-ER activity. This project was done at the end of an ER program in an EFL context. In this project, the students worked collaboratively to write a 1,000-word short story. The study examined how the ER teachers and ER students in the study perceived the story writing project. Data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with three ER teachers and six ER students. Findings showed that both the teachers and students perceived the story writing project as beneficial to enhance the students’ creativity and imagination. They also agreed on the connection between reading and writing. The quality of the story was perceived to be significantly influenced by the students’ reading behaviors. Practical suggestions on how to integrate this project into an ER program were also offered.

<p><em>Character education is an important provision in preparing early childhood in facing a future full of challenges, both academically and in the life of the nation and state, learning at Roudhotul Athfal Bina Ibsani Muslim in the current conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic is a challenge in efforts to manage education character even though the intensity of the encounter between teachers and students is reduced and moves to digital spaces. This study aims to describe the development of character education in RA Bina Insani during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research instrument uses observation, semi-structured interviews where the researcher tries to open the opinion and ideas of the informants so that the problem becomes clear. The technique used to analyze the data used a qualitative descriptive technique. The results showed that there are four models of learning model RA Bina Insani Muslimi during the Covid-19 pandemic; Online (online), offline (offline), Home visit (home learning once a week) and School Visit. The results show that the development of character education is outlined in daily and weekly programs and is still escorted by teachers by providing character control sheets, and providing appreciation and guidance for those who do not meet the criteria. The characters developed are the child's personality, independence, discipline, and responsibility. </em><em></em></p>

The article describes an approach to organizing the teacher-students interaction in programming courses using the Git version control system. In order to select the most suitable and affordable system for educational needs a comparative analysis of different Git repository management systems was carried out. Based on the experience of various educational institutions that use version control systems in their courses, the advantages and disadvantages of using these systems in teaching were identified. Taking into account the existing problems, a software solution was developed based on the GitLab system. As part of this solution, a method is proposed for organizing the work of a teacher and students in disciplines that use version control systems. This approach implies using both GitLab and additional system, which serves as a manager for Git repositories and is designed to facilitate the work of the teacher and administrator by automating the tasks they perform. The main purpose of the article is a detailed description of this approach: limiting permissions to both teachers and students, GitLab organization and functionality, a list of use cases for each user. The article also presents common workflows of the additional system, its main entities and their relationships and an overview of the features that the system provides.

This paper describes a Case Study in which a “macroergonomic” approach (Hendrick and Kleiner, 2001) was used to redesign the process and implement technology in support of the process of implementing office space. A project involving a 25,000-square-foot renovation of existing space, with 120 workstations and 100 employees was used as the basis to test the redesigned process and technology implementation. We concurrently redesigned the personnel and technology subsystems (see DeGreene, 1973), as opposed to having a pre-defined technology application drive the solution (Hendrick, 1995). Using a participatory ergonomics approach, we involved the employees who would be affected by changes to their work process to understand and contribute to the re-design. Through structured interviews, interactive discussions and observations, we redesigned the process from; design and layout of workstations through installation of furniture. Using business process modeling and simulation software, we modeled the “before” and “after” processes, and collected detailed measures of time and cost improvements. We found significant process performance improvements in Wait Time, Re-Work of Errors, and Cost reductions.
