Sanctuary is a documentary film in virtual reality (VR). The film uses 360-camera technology to offer a sensory immersive viewing experience. The film attempts to transcend the borders of filmmaking by merging new 360-camera technology and a nonlinear form of storytelling. The film is an observational piece. 360-degree videos are an emerging technology, which offers the viewer a sensory, immersive experience in virtual reality. Influenced by the 360-panoramic mural paintings created in 1860s, the use of the 360-camera breaks away from the syntax of documentary filmmaking and gives the audience an active role in the film-viewing experience. It breaks the traditional semantics of filmmaking and sets new rules of viewing which are personal and unique to each viewer. Sanctuary documents the Juhasz family, which has been living in a church since November 2014. The film is an eight-minute experience that gives the audience a 360- degree glimpse into the Juhasz family’s life and their living conditions. The film is presented as an installation, using Samsung’s Gear VR as the exhibition technology.

The six essays in this in this issue of Screen Bodies explore what we might call the affective modalities of media, that is, each author examines the potential of emerging and traditional media to transform individual and collective relations through the strategic use of embodied affective experience. Three essays in the issue focus on new and emerging technology. In, “The iAnimal Film Series: Activating Empathy Through Virtual Reality,” Holly Cecil examines the potential power of virtual reality to generate empathy in users. In particular, she looks at the way animal advocacy organizations combine documentary film and virtual reality to communicate the embodied experience of living and dying in a factory farm to provoke feeling and widespread opposition to the industry.

Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology with the potential to extract significantly more data about learners and the learning process. In this article, we present an analysis of how VR education technology companies frame, use and analyse this data. We found both an expansion and acceleration of what data are being collected about learners and how these data are being mobilised in potentially discriminatory and problematic ways. Beyond providing evidence for how VR represents an intensification of the datafication of education, we discuss three interrelated critical issues that are specific to VR: the fantasy that VR data is ‘perfect’, the datafication of soft-skills training, and the commercialisation and commodification of VR data. In the context of the issues identified, we caution the unregulated and uncritical application of learning analytics to the data that are collected from VR training.

Focusing on virtual reality (VR) and film cutting, this study compared and evaluated the effect of visual mode (2D, VR) and cutting rate (fast, medium, slow) on a load, to make an attempt for VR research to enter the cognitive field. This study uses a 2 × 3 experimental research design. Forty participants were divided into one of two groups randomly and watched films with three cutting rates. The subjective and objective data were collected during the experiment. The objective results confirm that VR films bring more powerful alpha, beta, theta wave activities, and bring a greater load. The subjective results confirm that the fast cutting rate brings a greater load. These results provide a theoretical support for further exploring the evaluation methods and standards of VR films and improving the viewing experience in the future.

Narratives in cinema text are seen as narratives of interrelated events occurring within specific space-time frames involving the author, narrator and characters. The intermedical nature of documentary filmmaking complicates its analysis in the coordinates of any research paradigm. However, among the universal categories of reception of film narratives, polyphonicism should be singled out as a means of creating a holistic view of a cultural product. The article offers the authorʼs vision of realization of the polyphonism of the film narrative in the documentaries “I Call You” (2006), “Poeta Maximus” (2008), “So No One Loved” (2008) from the series “Game of Fate”. It is concluded that there is a certain plot-compositional scheme of organization of audiovisual polyphonic narrative in the series. Among the specific figures of the screen narration in the analyzed documentary tapes we see transposition (eg, transition from the direct speech of the presenter to a voice-over commentary on a movie quote), overlay (simultaneous use of the “chronicle of the epoch” with the off-screen reading of an excerpt from an artistic text), photos and video snippets).

While sexual harassments are inappropriate behaviors in the society, the interpretation of and sensitivity toward sexual harassment can vary by individual. Differences across individuals, such as gender, may influence whether one interprets an action to be sexually harassing or not. Virtual reality technology enables human behavior assessment without interfacing with physical danger. The present work examined whether gender and body-gender transfer in VR influenced the perception of sexually harassing behaviors, and explored the utility of emerging technology in increasing one’s awareness of behaviors that may be considered sexually harassing. Participants (n=12) embodied in virtual characters of different genders and experienced seven sexually harassing scenarios in an immersive virtual environment in random order. In general, participants provided higher rating to the sensitivity toward sexual harassment in the VR harassment scenarios than those scenarios described on paper. There was an increase in participants’ sensitivity toward sexual harassment after experiencing sexual harassment scenarios from the perspective of the victim in VR. Participants perceived higher level of sexual harassment when they embodied in female avatars, which suggested there was an effect of VR with body-gender transfer on perception of sexual harassment. There were gender differences in awareness of harassing behaviors in VR environment, and VR may be a training method to narrow gender gap and increase awareness toward sexual harassment.

Using multicultural children’s literature is one way to help preservice teachers build cultural knowledge and awareness about diversity. Another possible practice, not commonly used, is the addition of emerging technology in conjunction with conventional instructional approaches. In this article, we reviewed incorporating a lesson about homelessness in preservice teachers’ ( N = 46) respective curricula. We provided an illustrative example of the class and assignment process employed to facilitate preservice teachers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness that can be used with K-12 students who are experiencing homelessness. The goal of these assignments was to initiate or continue the conversation about building knowledge related to effective teaching practices about diversity in general and homelessness in particular. In this article, we shared an innovative instructional strategy that might lead to a shift in educators’ approaches, a move toward more diverse curriculum.

Although virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology in tourism, little research has been conducted on what factors make consumers visit destinations presented by VR. To address this gap in the literature, this study developed a theoretical framework including authentic experience, cognitive and affective responses, attachment, and visit intention with VR tourism using a stimulus-organism-response (SOR) theory. The results revealed significant impacts of authentic experience on cognitive and affective responses, indicating that authentic experience is an important factor in VR tourism. The study identified cognitive and affective responses as significant mediators in predicting attachment and visit intention. The results demonstrated that the intention to visit places shown in VR tourism was influenced by attachment to VR. Cognitive response had a stronger influence than affective response on the intention to visit a destination in VR. This study sheds light on why potential tourists visit destinations shown in VR.

Purpose The purpose of this paper was to investigate housing satisfaction in a traditional neighborhood of Izmit, Turkey. According to this purpose, it was investigated whether the perceived living conditions (PLC) were mediating the effect on participants’ general housing satisfaction caused by satisfaction with the perceived quality of facilities (FQP), satisfaction with performance of local authorities (LA), satisfaction with social relations (SR) and satisfaction with physical surrounding (PS) in the Topçular neighborhood of Izmit District in Kocaeli, Turkey. Design/methodology/approach According to the hypotheses developed within the framework of the theoretical model, by using structural equation modeling (SEM), first, the direct relations between the variables were tested (PLC → overall housing satisfaction (OHS); PS, SR, LA → PLC; FQP → LA), then the indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed with the mediated role of OHS (PS, SR, LA → OHS → PLC). Findings The results show that all factors affected the OHS through the PLC. In conclusion, as the living conditions of the individual living in the neighborhood improve, the conditions take an active role in the relationship between the OHS and the satisfaction with the other relevant factors in the neighborhood, namely, PS, SR and performance of LA. In this relationship, it is seen that the satisfaction with PS has a negative effect, while the satisfaction with SR and satisfaction with the performance of LA have positive effects. Research limitations/implications The study was applied only to Turkey’s Izmit Province. Research may also be applied to other cities apart from those in Turkey. A small sample was also used in the study. Reaching a wider sampling for SEM can lead to different results. Practical implications Planners and designers should consider satisfaction – including various factors involved in planning, designing and refurbishing the neighborhoods – as the most important design data. Social implications The results of this study show that living conditions had an active role in the relationship between OHS and certain factors in the neighborhood: satisfaction with PS, SR and performance of LA. This study offers a framework to LA such as policymakers and urban planners to develop relevant and effective strategies and to improve dissatisfactory conditions in new and peripheral areas. Originality/value The originality of the paper is based on revealing the factors affecting the housing satisfaction of people living in the province of Izmit. This study offers a framework to LA such as policymakers and urban planners to develop relevant and effective strategies and to improve dissatisfactory conditions in new and peripheral areas.

Visual aids play active role in teaching Russian language because they enable students learning the language in better way, giving them opportunity to realize the topic much more as today’s effective method. This paper highlights some ideas of scholars’ for the use of visual aids (e.g., animation videos, documentary films), and an experiment carried out with the staff at the Department of Uzbek and Russian languages, Karshi Engineering-Economic institute as well as with the professor-teachers at the Department of Russian language and literature, Karshi State university, Karshi, Uzbekistan, in order to find out their attitudes according to the use of documentary films in Russian language classes. The findings are shown in the below-mentioned diagram. Рус тилини ўқитишда кўргазмали қўлланмалар самарали замонавий методлардан бири бўлиб, ўқувчиларга тилни мукаммал ўрганишга, мавзуни чуқурроқ англашга ёрдам беради. В статье приводятся мненияпреподавателей и ученых в отношении использования наглядных пособий (например, анимационных видеороликов, документальных фильмов), а также описывается эксперимент, проведенный преподавателями кафедры узбекского и русского языков Каршинского инженерно-экономического института и кафедры русского языка и литературы Каршинского государственного университета для выяснения их отношения к использованию документальных фильмов на занятиях по русскому языку. Полученные результаты показаны на диаграмме.
