Labour market research consistently demonstrates that finding and securing appropriate employment are key determinants of immigrant well-being and integration to Canada. Various policy-oriented initiatives are continually initiated by Canada's "Third sector" actors to address multiple barriers immigrants confront in the labour market. While awaiting progress, the difficulties recent immigrants face in Canada's increasingly competitive local labour markets has increased. This amplifies the need for re-examining early interventions. This paper explores what and how labour market information (LMI) is mediated to recent immigrants at the earliest stages of settlement, and through a qualitative content analysis assesses how the LMI can inform and support labour market decisions of recent immigrants seeking employment in Canada. Findings uncover overwhelming amounts and varied quality of LMI available from Canada's labour force development providers. This leaves recent immigrants unable to independently make realistic, informative and suitable employment choices needed to integrate in the Canadian labour market.

Topicality. Nowadays, crewing business in Ukraine is at the stage of formation and development, so its study is a rather new topic for modern Ukrainian science. The study of the problem of considering the crewing business from the point of view of rising the quality of the labour force in the seafarers' labour market, highlights the features of modern interaction between the subjects of the maritime segment of the labour market in terms of the effectiveness of work with marine personnel, helps to orient work in the maritime industry at the state level in the direction of risk reduction and maximum elimination of threats of the present for a modern shipping company, it is necessary to ensure the safety of seafarers in the legal and operational field, which is the basis of this scientific article. Aim and tasks. The aim and tasks of the study are to determine the features of modern interaction between the subjects of the maritime segment of the labour market: the shipowner, the crewing company and the seafarer to design further ways to develop crewing activities. Research results. The article considers the features of the interaction between the subjects of the maritime segment of the labour market: the shipowner, the crewing company and the sailor in the modern dimension of the development of crewing activities. The commercial relationship between the interests of the customer and the intermediary in the selection of a successful skilled employee is analysed. Threats to the development of the modern maritime industry, affecting the labour market of seafarers, have been identified. The ways of further state regulation of the activities of crewing companies in Ukraine on the employment of seafarers and ensuring their protection in any port of the world are covered. Conclusion. The value of the work is determined by the small number of publications on this topic. In Ukraine the opportunity to ensure the protection of seafarers is conditioned by a new state policy, it provides for the introduction of new laws and regulations in the maritime industry, they are aimed at supporting seafarers working on ships on international voyages. The adoption of positive state decisions in the shortest possible time is a way to strengthen international cooperation in ensuring the observance of the labour and social seafarers� rights, their guarantees, ultimately, it will have a positive effect on the development of crewing activities in our country.

Workaholism has been a growing issue among the labour force worldwide. However, there is no consensus between scholars about its definition yet. It might be described as “being overly concerned about work, driven by a strong and uncontrollable desire to work, and spending so much energy and effort on work that it impairs private relationships, personal hobbies/activities, and/or health”. Generally, people with specific personality traits may have an increased chance of developing workaholism. In addition, there are other factors, such as sociocultural characteristics, relationships with colleagues and significant others, and organizational culture might also play an important influence on developing workaholism. It causes many physical and psychological health problems, such as high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and family and lifestyle dissatisfaction, and a reduction in job satisfaction, presenteeism, and motivation. Putting all of this together, it is clear that workaholism has a negative influence on employees’ quality of life and overall well-being. Therefore, this study aimed at examining a variety of approaches to define “workaholism” in related literature, defining its etiology, related factors, outcomes, prevention, and treatment. The PubMed/Medline database was also used for related studies that were published in English. “Workaholism”, “obsessive–compulsive behavior”, and “quality of health” were used as keywords. It is crucial to take action to prevent people from becoming workaholics. Early diagnoses of workaholism, using predictive factors by occupational healthcare professionals in the workplace, would help decrease its impact on workers’ health, and an effective treatment of workaholism should be applied.

AbstractOn today's labour markets, the basic characteristics of the quality of the labour force is knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience possessed by it. Today, employers are looking for employees with high interpersonal competences, manners, responsible, hard-working, independent, honest and having the ability to learn quickly. For this, as an asset, they add the higher education, preferably directional, creativity and experience. The taken research area is characterized by economic lag in comparison with Gdańsk agglomeration area, as well as with other regions. In the article the reference was made to the declared needs of employers towards future employees, based on interviews conducted in 101 entities of the city of Słupsk and Słupsk county. The main aim of the research was to determine the usefulness of geographic knowledge for the local labour market. And thus indicating the possibility of increasing the attractiveness of geographical graduates in the labour market. Among the needs of employers of Słupsk labour market in accordance with the overall national trend, there is a large deficit of soft competencies, but also, among others, the gap typically professional related to information technology and engineering skills have been diagnosed. There has been a large gap identified in the ability to apply the knowledge (academic) in practical activities, which is called by the employers 'the professional experience'. In contrast, the studies on the usefulness of (the attractiveness of the labour market) competencies that are possible to learn while studying geography, showed the particular importance, valuable for the modern labour market skills of searching, collecting and processing of information. Currently in Poland, even in conditions of high unemployment existing mismatch between qualification and professional structure of supply and demand for labour can be observed. In the labour market, the presence is noted at the same time, the deficit and surplus professions and employers tend to have difficulty in recruiting people with specific skills and vocational skills. Not innovative small entities (which predominate in the structure of entities, inter alia, in Słupsk local labour market) are not able to take over the education of strictly professional competences due to a lack of capital. The role of practical education courses for universities is visible here. They are accumulating equipment and supplies for practical training which may in a flexible way try to respond to changing economic conditions.

The Living with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (L-IPF) questionnaire was developed with substantial input from patients with IPF to assess symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Because IPF is the prototypical chronic fibrosing interstitial lung disease (ILD) with a progressive phenotype, we expanded applicability of the L-IPF by deleting the word “idiopathic”, creating the L-PF (Living with Pulmonary Fibrosis) questionnaire, and then assessed its relevance among patients with progressive fibrosing ILDs in one-to-one interviews.Patients in the USA and Germany with any progressive fibrosing ILD other than IPF were asked about their disease and symptoms, completed the 44-item L-PF questionnaire (comprising two modules that assess symptoms and impacts of disease) and then answered a series of debriefing questions. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded for qualitative content analysis.Twenty patients were interviewed, but time constraints meant not all were asked about all items. The most frequent diagnoses were rheumatoid arthritis-associated ILD (25%) and mixed connective tissue disease-associated ILD (20%). Almost all patients endorsed the symptoms assessed by the L-PF: shortness of breath (19/20), cough (19/20 patients) and fatigue (18/20). Most patients endorsed impacts of progressive fibrosing ILD on activities of daily living, physical well-being, sleep, emotional well-being, and social aspects of their lives. Most patients had an overall positive impression of the Symptoms module and understood items as intended. All seven patients asked understood the items of the Impacts module.The L-PF contains concepts relevant and important to patients with progressive fibrosing ILD, and items are understood as intended.

Learning in later life (citizens over 65 or retired) is becoming common. The motivation and interests of the senior citizens to keep learning are mainly personal, they are not job related needs or labour market qualification requirements. These personal aims can be seen from the quality of life (QoL) perspective, where education increases well-being, integration and participation of the elderly in the present society. Institutions dealing with senior learners then face the challenge to provide a socio-educational intervention to senior learners, which has a requirements, needs and motivation different from other adults, and that specific pedagogy, courses and staff qualifications must be considered. From this need the project QEduSen (supported by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission) produced a guide and a evaluation toolkit

This paper investigates the technical efficiency of labour market matching taking a stochastic frontierapproach. The data set consists of monthly data from 145 Local Labour Offices (LLOs) in Finland over theperiod 1995/01-2004/09. The true fixed-effects model is utilised in order to separate cross-sectionalheterogeneity from inefficiency. According to the results, there are notable differences in matching efficiencybetween regions, and these differences contribute significantly to the number of filled vacancies. If all regionswere as efficient as the most efficient one, the number of total matches per month would increase by over 10%. If inefficiency had no role in the matching function, the number of matches would increase by almost 24 %.The weight of the composition of the job-seeker stock and other environmental variables in the determinationof matching inefficiency is on average 61 %. In particular, job seekers out of the labour force and highlyeducated job seekers improve technical efficiency in the matching function

Hardly anybody would agree that the labour market satisfactorily meets the needs of the tourism and hospitality industry (THI). The THI worldwide faces the shortage of skilled labour force and the Slovenian THI is no exception. The problem persists in spite of various recruitment measures of employers, e.g. engaging migrant workforce, student work, black market, etc. The first aim of the paper was to explore the workforce needs of the THI with an emphasis on its unmet demands. The desk research revealed the mismatch between the supply and demand of the workforce on lower levels. Since the system of the National vocational qualifications (NVQ) is presumed beneficial for deficiencies of the labour market the second aim of the article was to explore the current state of the NVQ system in Slovenia and the selection of the existing NVQs in the THI in order to find out whether the number and structure of awarded NVQ certificates improved structural imbalances on the TH labour market. The author came to the conclusion that all forms of lifelong learning might contribute to improve the qualification structure of the labour force in the country provided that the employers overcome their distrust of the credibility and quality of the NVQs.

Abstract Background: The “Employment in the neighbourhoods” program is an innovative, tailor-made Active Labour Market Program that has been implemented in 12 neighbourhoods in Barcelona (Spain). Its goal is to get people from deprived, high-unemployment neighbourhoods back to work. The aim of this study was to describe the effects of the program on participants’ quality of life, and identify the mechanisms underlying these effects, according to their own perception and the perception of technical staff who assisted them. Methods: We used Concept Mapping, a mixed methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, to develop a conceptual map of the participants’ and technical staffs’ perceptions about changes in the participants’ quality of life. Data collection occurred within the generation and structuring steps where participants brainstormed answers to a focus question, and then rated and sorted the responses. To create maps, we used Concept Systems Incorporated software, which conducted two main forms of analysis, a multidimensional scaling analysis, and a hierarchical cluster analysis. Results: Study participants reported several positive effects on mental health and emotional wellbeing, including self-esteem and empowerment, and considered that this was achieved through strengthened social networks, skills acquisition, emotional coaching, and personalized technical assistance. They also described some negative impacts, mainly related to the labour market situation. We observed marked gender differences in the discourses of program participants. Conclusions: The results obtained have allowed us to identify different perceived effects and mechanisms by which the “Employment in the Neighbourhoods” Active Labour Market Programme can influence quality of life of participants from the most deprived areas of Barcelona.
