Abstract. Aims: To discuss and review the latest research related to gambling expansion. Method: We completed a literature review and empirical comparison of peer reviewed findings related to gambling expansion and subsequent gambling-related changes among the population. Results: Although gambling expansion is associated with changes in gambling and gambling-related problems, empirical studies suggest that these effects are mixed and the available literature is limited. For example, the peer review literature suggests that most post-expansion gambling outcomes (i. e., 22 of 34 possible expansion outcomes; 64.7 %) indicate no observable change or a decrease in gambling outcomes, and a minority (i. e., 12 of 34 possible expansion outcomes; 35.3 %) indicate an increase in gambling outcomes. Conclusions: Empirical data related to gambling expansion suggests that its effects are more complex than frequently considered; however, evidence-based intervention might help prepare jurisdictions to deal with potential consequences. Jurisdictions can develop and evaluate responsible gambling programs to try to mitigate the impacts of expanded gambling.

Automated, wearable cameras can benefit health-related research by capturing accurate and objective information about individuals’ daily experiences. However, wearable cameras present unique privacy- and confidentiality-related risks due to the possibility of the images capturing identifying or sensitive information from participants and third parties. Although best practice guidelines for ethical research with wearable cameras have been published, limited information exists on the risks of studies using wearable cameras. The aim of this literature review was to survey risks related to using wearable cameras, and precautions taken to reduce those risks, as reported in empirical research. Forty-five publications, comprising 36 independent studies, were reviewed, and findings revealed that participants’ primary concerns with using wearable cameras included physical inconvenience and discomfort in certain situations (e.g. public settings). None of the studies reviewed reported any serious adverse events. Although it is possible that reported findings do not include all risks experienced by participants in research with wearable cameras, our findings suggest a low level of risk to participants. However, it is important that investigators adopt recommended precautions, which can promote autonomy and reduce risks, including participant discomfort.

Introduction As online nursing education programs continue to increase to meet the demands of the growing market, nursing faculty are challenged to develop and deliver courses based on best practice principles. The Online Nursing Education Best Practices Guide (ONE Guide) builds on and extends the nationally recognized Quality Matters® program and serves as a roadmap guiding course development and delivery. The fundamental principle for success in online teaching is instructor presence; the teacher as a facilitator of learning is illustrated throughout the guide. An Online Instructor Checklist facilitates systematic implementation of best practice principles. Methods This article is based on a focused literature review and concept analysis resulting in a comprehensive guide for delivery of effective, quality nursing education through best practices in the online learning environment. A broad search of databases focused on articles during 2014 to 2019 was completed. The literature review included articles that examined over 1200 student perceptions of instructor presence in the online setting. Conclusion Nurses carry a direct responsibility for the health and well-being of patients. Nursing quality education proves fundamental to the profession’s long-term outcomes. The ONE Guide and Online Instructor Checklist apply comprehensive, evidence-based teaching strategies to give a roadmap for success in the online teaching environment.

Abstract Background Clinical decision support for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) diagnostics reduces inappropriate testing, leading to decreased need for isolation and antibiotic use. Our institution utilized manual discontinuation by laboratory staff of CDI testing for inappropriate specimens, including formed stool and age < 1 year. We aimed to assess the financial impact of instituting a CDI best practice alert at a quaternary care children’s hospital. Methods A multidisciplinary team mapped inappropriate testing criteria identified from literature review with discrete fields in our electronic health record (EHR, EpicCare) to design an alert. The exclusion criteria identified included: (1) age < 1 year; (2) positive C. difficile test within past 14 days; (3) less than or equal to 3 unformed stools in past 24 hours; (4) current receipt of CDI-directed therapy; or (5) laxative use or barium exposure in prior 48 hours. 6 months of data prior to implementation were reviewed to estimate impact of the alert. At implementation, any exclusion criteria detected in the EHR at the time of order entry triggered an alert to deter CDI testing. Cost estimates for averted tests (Quick Check Complete Assay/Illumigene) included cost of test ($50), cost of isolation/personal protective equipment ($159/day), and cost of treatment with oral vancomycin in false-positives ($2250/treatment course). Results In a 6-month pre-implementation period, 586 tests for CDI were ordered; of which, 23% were identified by our criteria as inappropriate. During the first 3 months of alert implementation, 256 tests were ordered, of which 105 (41%) caused the alert to fire. Of those, 56 tests were not ordered, for a 22% reduction in testing. Laboratory staff continued to manually stop tests not meeting criteria, such as patient age <1 year when possible. Based on avoidance of testing, use of PPE, and 10 day antibiotic treatment for false-positives (assumed 25% by literature review), this translated to cost savings of $69,916, and an annual cost savings of $279,664. Conclusion Implementation of an alert for select patients using a bioinformatics algorithm reduced inappropriate CDI testing. Clinical decision support for CDI can lead to substantial cost savings for both antibiotic use and isolation precautions. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

This chapter decodes the techniques of PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation) in MCDA. Rigorous literature review will assist in deciphering and rationalising the progressions in the techniques since the inception of PROMETHEE. The chapter shall extensively review literature on PROMETHEE and shall concisely explore relevant cases. The literature shall include journal articles, research paper based on case studies and conference proceedings concentrating mainly in the discipline of management science. The chapter will untangle the essential steps that will simplify the mathematical component used in PROMETHEE I and PROMETHEE II with a hypothetical case and a practical case. In the final phase of the chapter the limitations of PROMETHEE I and II shall be accentuated.

PurposeThe paper aims to explore staff practices in using e‐learning to embed sustainability literacy, highlight best practice and determine areas for improvement.Design/methodology/approachA framework of four areas for developing student sustainability literacy (SSL) was proposed as a basis for analysing practice. A literature review then explored the extent to which e‐learning is used to support embedding SSL in the curriculum, and the types of e‐learning currently in use for this.FindingsE‐learning tools were most frequently used to provide flexible access to information, followed by support for communication and collaboration, and were less frequently used for the development of specific skills, personal identity and confidence.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample of case studies provided only limited evidence. A survey of practitioners could be undertaken to explore and validate the issues raised by the literature review.Practical implicationsThe review highlighted scope for a pedagogical shift away from using e‐learning for information delivery and practical communication, and towards supporting rich, student‐centred forms of learning in both blended and distance learning modes.Social implicationsThis shift would create more powerful learning experiences for students, more effectively develop students' personal identities and skills, and yield graduates who are more confident in their ability to create more sustainable futures.Originality/valueThis paper will be of value to academic staff and educational developers looking to develop practice in embedding SSL in teaching and learning, and to harness the potential of e‐learning.
