The effects of daily physical activity on peripheral insulin action were investigated in aged individuals. Glucose infusion rates (GIR) during the euglycemic insulin clamp procedure in aged bedridden, aged controls, and aged athletes were compared with those in young controls and young athletes at insulin infusion rates of 40 and 400 mU.m-2.min-1 to estimate insulin action at physiological and maximal insulin concentrations, respectively. At both insulin infusion rates, GIR was significantly higher in aged athletes and significantly lower in aged bedridden subjects than in aged controls. Although there was no statistical difference in GIR at 400 mU.m-2 x min-1 between young athletes and young controls, GIR at 40 mU.m-2 x min-1 was higher in young athletes than in young controls. Comparison of the aged and young groups showed that although GIR at 400 mU.m-2 x min-1 was significantly lower in aged controls than in young controls, there was no significant difference between the aged athletes and the young athletes. We conclude that insulin responsiveness (insulin action at the postreceptor binding site) may decrease with the aging process and may be further affected by physical inactivity. Although physical training may improve insulin responsiveness in aged individuals up to levels similar to those in young athletes, physical training in young individuals may improve only insulin sensitivity.

Physical inactivity is prevalent among ethnic minority women including Korean American (KA) women. We explored the barriers to and facilitators of physical activity (PA) and strategies to promote continued engagement in a PA program with a component of an online community. We conducted a qualitative descriptive study of 37 KA middle-aged women who used to be physically inactive and participated in an exit interview following postintervention visit. Using a thematic analysis approach to analyze the data, we found the individual, interpersonal, and neighborhood/community-level barriers to and facilitators of PA; social influence and social support-related themes were evident. Participants expressed benefit and interest in lifestyle modification using social media. Such program that reduces the barriers and reinforces the facilitators may be able to help motivate KA women to increase their PA.

Abstract Background: This study examines the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension among the elderly in rural southwest China. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 4,833 consenting adults aged ≥60 years in rural regions of Yunnan Province, China was conducted in 2017. Data on individual socioeconomic status, sleep quality, physical activity level, and family history of hypertension were collected with a standardized questionnaire. Blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference were also measured. An individual socioeconomic position (SEP) index was constructed using principal component analysis. Structure equation modeling (SEM) was applied to analyze the association between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and the prevalence of hypertension. Results: The overall prevalence of hypertension was 50.6% in the study population. The following associated factors had statistically significant effect on hypertension: body composition, including measures of obesity and central obesity, had the greatest total effect on hypertension (0.21), followed by family history of hypertension (0.14), gender (0.08), sleep quality (-0.07), SEP (-0.06), physical inactivity (0.06), and diabetes (0.06). Body composition, SEP, and family history of hypertension had both direct and indirect effects on hypertension, whereas those of physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality were directly associated with prevalence of hypertension. Gender was indirectly associated with prevalence of hypertension. Conclusion: Individual SEP, body composition, physical inactivity, diabetes, and sleep quality critically influence the prevalence of hypertension. Future interventions to prevent and control hypertension should give increased attention to individuals with low SEP and should focus on controlling diabetes and obesity, increasing physical activity levels, and improving quality of sleep among older adults aged ≥60 years in rural southwest China.
