Bacteriological study was conducted to determine the occurrence of bacteria in 52 dressed broiler with intact skin (n = 26) and without skin (n = 26) and to demonstrate the role of packaging and pretreatment chilling on the changes of carcass quality during the period from July to August 2000. The values of total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC), total streptococcal count (TStC) and total staphylococcal count (TSC) were determined for meat samples of thigh and breast and swab samples of skin and visceral surfaces of the broilers with intact skin (n = 80) and without skin (n = 80). The values of TVC, TCC, TStC and TSC in both cases with intact skin and without skin were compared. The results indicate that the dressed broilers with intact skin kept in packed condition after prechilled and frozen could maintain the good quality of sensory characteristics up to a maximum period of 10 days storage. Of the160 samples examined bacteriologically, 39.06% had contamination with different bacteria, of which   Staphylococcus spp. (90.63%), Streptococcus spp. (30.00%), Escherichia coli (60.63%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22.50%), Micrococcus spp. (18.75%) and Salmonella spp. (11.88%). It appears from these results that the current systems of pretreatment, sanitation, storing temperature and processing are necessary to be improved to ensure the quality assurance and quality control program and subsequently maintain the bacteriological and organoleptic quality of dressed broilers, thus minimizing the potential health hazards associated with contaminants gaining access to the dressed or processed broilers. The study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus in four markets in Orlu Local Government Area, South East, Nigeria. Forty freshly smoked samples of Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus were procured from Eke Eziachi, Orlu Main, Aforaja Umuowa and Afor Ogidi Ihioma markets and analyzed using standard techniques. Results revealed that Orlu main market had the highest level of microbial contamination (mean bacteria and fungi count of 5 x 102 and 10 x 102cfu/g respectively). The highest total viable count (7 x102 cfu/g) of Scomber scumbrus was obtained in Aforaja Umuowa market while the least value of 2 x102 cfu/g was observed in Afor Ogidi Ihioma market. Also, similar value was recorded in Trachurus trachurus at Aforaja Umuowa market. Results from the study indicated that pathogens present in fish samples included bacteria (Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp and Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (Gliocladium spp., Candida spp., Rhizopus spp., Alternaria spp., Aspergillus spp., Clasdosprium spp., Fonsecaca spp., Chrysoporius spp., mucour spp. and Botrytis spp). The study also showed that freshly smoked Trachurus trachurus and Scomber scumbrus samples sold in the four markets under assessment were contaminated with pathogenic organisms. This study was carried out to assess the microbiological status of three hot meals served in eight selected school canteens of Mauritius, with two schools randomly selected from each of the four school zones of the island. Three individual samples of farata, panini, or fried noodles were collected at each school during two independent visits. The three individual samples of each food type collected during each visit were then pooled before being subjected to microbiological analyses. A total of 48 composite samples were analyzed. The parameters tested were Total Viable Count (TVC), Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria spp. The microbiological analyses revealed that paninis were deemed as generally acceptable with TVC falling in the range of 3.0-5.7 Log CFU/g and undetectable levels of S. aureus and E. coli. In contrast, fried noodles and faratas harboured a moderately high level of TVC (4.4-6.7 Log CFU/g) and objectionably high levels S. aureus (3.1 to 5.0 Log CFU/g) and E. coli (3.1-5.1 Log CFU/g) for seven out of the eight schools.

The correct assessment of the physiological quality of seed lots is necessary for the quality control program of companies. For such purpose, tests that detect differences in the physiological potential of seed lots and that meet the minimum market requirements. Thus, the study was conducted towards assessing the efficiency of laboratory tests in differentiating the quality of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés seed lots. Seeds from nine lots were assessed regarding water content, germination, first germination count, electrical conductivity and seedling emergence in sand in the laboratory (normal seedlings, first count and germination rate index), and the results were compared with those from the seedling emergence test conducted in the field. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with four replicates, and the Pearson correlation coefficient between the values from the germination, vigor and field seedling emergence tests was determined. The germination and seedling emergence in sand tests and the seedling emergence rate index efficiently assess the physiological quality of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés seed lots, providing data similar to those from seedling emergence in the field.

AbstractMicrobiological studies on chicken meat and carcasses are well documented, but very few studies exist on goose meat and carcasses. Therefore, in this study, dried goose carcass samples were collected from the local households in Kars/Turkey and microbiologically analyzed in terms of public health risks. The total mesophilic viable count was found to be 6.58 (mean log10 CFU g−1) (100%). The number of Enterobacteriaceae was 4.85 (92.8%). Coliform bacteria was counted at the numbers of 2.98 (67.8%), while it was 3.95 (91.1%) for the enterococci, 0.42 (26.7%) for the clostridia, 0.04 (3.5%) for the Clostridium perfringens, and 0.41 (12.5%) for the coagulase positive staphylococci. The numbers of mould and yeast were 0.93 (25%) and 4.81 (94.6%), respectively. Salmonellae and Bacillus cereus could not be isolated in the samples. The results indicate that the dried goose meat samples had poor hygienic quality, contained some of the pathogen microorganisms that are likely to pose a potential health risk.

The quality control program includes several tests, including collimator testing. According to Kepmenkes No.1250 Year 2009, collimator testing is done once a month or after repair. Radiology Installation RSUD K.R.M.T Wongsonegoro Semarang, when examined baby gram and thoraks using aircraft X-ray mobile unit with wide field settings according to object size, the result of the resulting radiograph cut off. This X-ray plane was used in 2006. During the use, no collimator testing has been performed. This study aims to determine the results of the suitability of light beam collimator. His type of research is quantitative research with observational approach. This research uses Collimator Test Tool tool with variation of FFD 100 cm and 150 cm, the field of irradiation is set 14x18 cm. The test results were tabulated, then analyzed based on Kepmenkes No.1250 in 2009. Limit tolerance value of shift ≤ 2% of FFD used. The result of collimator test shows that in FFD 100 cm we get the average X axis = 1.38%, Y axis = 1.5%. FFD 150 cm obtained average X axis = 1.73%, Y axis = 1.42%. The value of the shift that occurs is still within the limits of tolerance. We recommend that you do a periodical test once a month to ensure the quality of radiography.

This study was conducted to evaluate efficacy of acetic acid solution to eliminate pathogens, prevent food deterioration and extend the shelf-life of dressed broiler meat without adversely affecting its quality. A total of 40 broilers were categorized into two groups. Each group was further categorized into two sub-groups: one for intact skin and another for without skin. Each bird of either group viz. comprised of two portions breast and thigh muscle. Acid spray and acid immersion were used. Bacteriological analysis by total viable count (TVC) and sanitary quality determination of dressed broiler by taste panel scores were performed. Acetic acid treatment reduced the initial level of TVC by about 0.5 to 0.724 log colony forming unit (CFU)/gm of meat. Maximum reduction in TVC (0.724) was achieved when acetic acid immersion treatment was given to meat and it was evident that the meat quality of dressed broiler after treatment with acetic acid remains better up to 5 days of storage.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/ujzru.v31i0.15370Univ. j. zool. The aim of the present study was to determine the microbial quality of freshly drawn cow’s milk belonging to the arsenic affected and non-affected areas. In the present work 25 milk sample were collected from five different arsenic affected and non-affected areas. The analysis comprised enumeration of total viable count (TVC), total coliform count (TCC) and total staphylococcal count (TSC) for the determination of sanitary quality. The highest total viable count, total coliform count and total staphylococcus count were log 5.894 ± 0.221, log 2.832± 0.129 and log 2.898 ± 0.162 respectively. Staphylococcus spp, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp and Bacillus spp were isolated from the milk samples. Among them Escherichia coli were isolated from the maximum milk samples. It is found that the level of microbial quality in terms of TVC, TCC and TSC were high in arsenic affected areas than arsenic non-affected area. It also found that TVC and TCC were positively correlated with each other. This survey indicates that most of the raw milk samples were not satisfactory in course of public health standard as some pathogenic bacteria were detected from these samples and it is necessary to improve the hygienic practices required for the handling and processing of milk.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjvm.v12i2.21297 Bangl. Researchers strive to optimize data quality in order to ensure that study findings are valid and reliable. In this paper, we describe a data quality control program designed to maximize quality of survey data collected using computer-assisted personal interviews. The quality control program comprised three phases: (1) software development, (2) an interviewer quality control protocol, and (3) a data cleaning and processing protocol. To illustrate the value of the program, we assess its use in the Translating Research in Elder Care Study. We utilize data collected annually for two years from computer-assisted personal interviews with 3004 healthcare aides. Data quality was assessed using both survey and process data. Missing data and data errors were minimal. Mean and median values and standard deviations were within acceptable limits. Process data indicated that in only 3.4% and 4.0% of cases was the interviewer unable to conduct interviews in accordance with the details of the program. Interviewers’ perceptions of interview quality also significantly improved between Years 1 and 2. While this data quality control program was demanding in terms of time and resources, we found that the benefits clearly outweighed the effort required to achieve high-quality data.

This study determined bacterial quality of chicken rolls sold in a fast food restaurant at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) campus. Fifteen chicken rolls (ten premicrowaved and five post-microwaved) were collected. Samples were inoculated into selective media, Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar, Salmonella Shigella (SS) agar, Thiosulphate Citrate Bile Salts Sucrose (TCBS) agar and Mannitol Salt (MS) agar. The total viable count (TVC) and total Staphylococcal count (TSC) of pre-microwaved samples were 4.4 log CFU/g and 4.2 log CFU/g, respectively. In post-microwaved samples, the TVC and TSC were 2.7 log CFU/g and 2.6 log CFU/g, respectively. Microwave treatment significantly reduced the TVC and TSC in the chicken rolls (P<0.05). Bacteria were recovered only from samples inoculated onto MS agar. Colonies on MS agar were characteristics of Staphylococcus spp, confirmed by sugar fermentation, catalase and coagulase tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. This study recorded coagulase negative staphylococcus (CNS) resistant to three antibiotics, ampicillin, cephalexin and vancomycin. It is suggested that chicken rolls sold in the fast food restaurant contaminated with resistant CNS might pose a public health hazard.Bangl. vet. 2015. Vol. 32, No. 1, 13-18
