A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different seed coating materials and storage containers on germination, seedling vigour and suitability of packaging material for soybean seed. Seed of soybean varietyPS1024 was used for coating purpose with 6 coating treatments viz., T0 (control), T1 (Polymer coating i.e. Polykote @ 3 ml kg-1 of seed diluted with 5 ml of water), T2 (Flowable Thiram i.e. Royal flow 40 SC @ 2.4 ml kg-1 of seed), T3 (T1 + T2), T4 (Vitavax 200 i.e.thiram 37.5 % and carboxyl 37.5% @ 2 g kg-1 of seed and T5(T1+ T4). The coated seeds were stored in two kinds of containers i.e. jute canvas bag, high density poly ethylene (HDPE) non- laminated bag and bimonthly observation on germination and seedling vigour were recorded. After 8th month of storage, germination and vigour index in polythene bag stored seeds were significantly higher than the seed stored in cloth bag. Among seed coating treatments, maximum %germination was recorded in polymer coating @ 3 ml kg-1 followed by vitavax 200 @ 2 g kg-1of seed treatment (T5) which was significantly higher than rest of the coated treatment including untreated control seeds (T0 ). Similarly, maximum seed vigour index was observed in T5 and minimum vigor index was recorded with T0 (untreated control). DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/sja.v12i2.21913 SAARC J. Background: Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element to higher plants, animals and humans, but low Se levels are a global public health concern. Seed priming has become a basic strategy for the production of Se-riched agricultural products, but its application is still not clear in the production of Se-enrich alfalfa, hence this study was conducted for the production of Se-enriched alfalfa by seed priming with different concentrations and time on seed vigour. Methods: Seeds were primed with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mmol L-1 of sodium selenite solution for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h at 20°C and their germination percentage, germination index, seedling vigour index and mean germination time were analyzed. Result: Seed vigour of alfalfa was improved by priming with low selenium (Se) concentration (0.5 and 1.0 mmol L-1), but was inhibited by high Se concentration ( greater than 2.0 mmol L-1). Hence, it must be necessary to carefully select appropriate concentration and time for the application of Se priming in alfalfa seeds. The optimal manner of Se priming in alfalfa seeds might be at 1.0 mmol L-1 concentration for 9 h.

The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, HSTU, Dinajpur during April – July 2010 to know the effect of abiotic and biotic factors, storage periods and storage containers on the seed quality of French bean. Tin container showed the highest germination, normal seedlings and vigour index which were followed by polythene bag, where Gunny bag showed the lowest germination, normal seedlings and vigour index upto 60 days after storage. The highest 1000-seed weight, moisture content, abnormal seedlings, seed rot and incidence of the Fusarium oxysporum were recorded in Gunny bag, where the lowest of these parameters were recorded in Tin container. Seed colour of Tin container were more or less same as initial colour, but seeds of Gunny bag were changed into fade or brown colour at 60 days after storage. Moisture content, 1000-seed weight, abnormal seedlings, seed rot, fungi association were increased, but germination and normal seedlings were decreased with the increase of storage periods. Among the three containers, Tin container was the best and the Gunny bag was the worst storage containers upto 60 days of storage for French bean seed. Abstract Seed and seedling vigour is an aspect of seed quality which affects field establishment and performance. Low maize yields have been reported to be affected by several factors in which poor quality seed with low seed and seedling vigour. Information is scarce on seed and seedling vigour in maize inbred lines developed for tropical environments. Fifteen genotypes of tropical maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines were evaluated to determine the level of differences in seed and seedling vigour traits, and extent of relationships among traits and their heritability. A substantial amount of genetic variability was found, which suggested that most of the traits under study could be improved through selection and utilized in breeding programs. Positive and significant interrelationship among seed germination and seedling traits and a positive correlation between seed germination and seed vigour and field emergence showed that these could be given due consideration in crop improvement for seed and seedling vigour. High genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance were obtained for seed germination, seed emergence, shoot length and seedling vigour index I and II, revealing the possibility of improvement in these characters through direct selection. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified seed emergence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I and II and tetrazolium vigour as characters that contributed greatly to variation in seed vigour in the maize inbred lines. Cluster analysis partitioned the genotypes into two groups, with group I consisting of seven genotypes and group II comprised the other eight genotypes, which suggested that hybridization between the two groups could lead to high level of heterosis. Genotype V5 had superior seedling vigour traits compared to other genotypes. Seedling emergence, shoot length, seedling vigour index I, seedling vigour index II and tetrazolium vigour are effective characters for good seedling vigour traits in maize inbred lines investigated.

Watermelon seed being an oily seed is prone to rapid deterioration of its quality, hence maintaining quality during storage is germane. The study therefore investigated the effect of crude plant powder, storage containers and storage duration on the seed quality of two varieties of watermelon seeds. Seed lots each of 100 g of each variety were treated with 10 g of four crude plant powders of clove basil leaf, red chilli pepper fruit, garlic, neem leaf and a synthetic fungicide. All samples were stored in three storage containers (envelope, tin and glass bottle). Treated seeds were stored under ambient conditions for 180 days. Germination and seedling vigour were determined at 180 day time course after storage. Data were subjected to mean separation using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Significant differences were observed in the quality traits examined in water melon due to differences in variety, seed treatment, storage container and storage period. ‘Kaolak’ was the best in storage in terms of seedling vigour and viability. Glass bottle was identified as the best storage container in maintaining seed quality of water melon throughout the storage period. The use of organic materials especially neem and clove basil leaf powder proved much better for maintaining germinability and seedling vigour and extension of seed longevity than inorganic material.

Planting healthy seeds and other inputs have an impact on seed quality, fungal invasion deteriorates the seed quality in soil and storage. Studies on chickpea carried out at Seed Research and Technology Center, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during spring 2010-11 2011-12 revealed that benomyl was found effective followed by Pseudomonas fluorescens in the inhibition of mycelial growth of Fusarium solani. Maximum germination percentage was recorded with Benomyl (Benomyl 500 WP) @ 2 g/kg seed (treated check) and Tebuconazole @ 1 ml/ kg seed (95 per cent) followed by treatment with P. fluorescens @ 10 g/kg seed along with soil application of P. fluorescens @ 3 kg/acre (94 per cent). Maximization of growth parameters like root length, shoot length and total seedling length were observed with Benomyl @ 2 g/ kg seed as 17.0 cm, 10.3 cm and 27.3 cm, respectively. Considering seedling vigour index as an important seed quality character, P. fluorescens and Benomyl @ 2 g/kg seed recorded high seedling vigor index. The per cent recovery of infested seeds was found to be low with treated seeds when compared to the control.

Background: Black gram is the important pulses crop, grown throughout the country; gives low seed yield mainly due to poor management and low soil fertility. Development of suitable technology is essential to enhance productivity. Seed priming is one such effective technology which enhance rapid and uniform emergence to achieve high vigour, leading to better stand establishment and yield. The current research aimed to study micronutrient seed priming and rhizobium coating on seed germination, seedling vigour, crop growth and seed yield in black gram. Methods: Blackgram seeds were primed with 10 different micronutrient solutions with different concentrations and evaluated for its quality parameters to find out suitable seed priming technique. Seeds from two best priming treatments were coated with rhizobium @ 30g/kg of seed and evaluated for its production potential and resultant seed quality under field condition.Result: Seed priming with 0.5% ZnSO4 at 1/3rd seed to solution ratio for 3 hours recorded higher germination (96%) and vigour index (3811) than control which recorded 84% seed germination and 2528 of vigour index under laboratory experiment. Field experiments revealed that, seeds primed with 0.5% ZnSO4 and coated with rhizobium @ 30g per kg of seeds improved seed yield by 13.2% over control.

A laboratory study was undertaken to know the effect of seed polymer coating with Zn and Fe nanoparticles (NPs) at different concentration (10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ppm) in pigeonpea at Department of Seed Science and Technology, UAS, Raichur. Among the treatments seed polymer coating with Zn NPs at 750 ppm recorded significantly higher seed germination (96.00 %), seedling length (26.63 cm), seedling dry weight (85.00 mg), speed of germination (32.95), field emergence (89.67 %), seedling vigour index (2556), dehydrogenase activity (0.975 OD value) and α-amylase activity (25.67 mm) and lowest abnormal seedlings (2.50 %) over their bulk forms and control followed by Fe and Zn NPs at 500 ppm. However, in contrast to beneficial effects, these NPs also shown inhibitory effect on germination and seedling growth at higher concentration (nano Zn >750 ppm and nano Fe > 500 ppm). Hence, from the results it is concluded that Zn NPs at 750 ppm can be used to enhance quality of the pigeonpea seeds.

The study was conducted to standardize the methodology of humid priming for improving the seed germination and vigour of okra seeds and to compare the efficacy of different enhancement techniques such as hydro priming, spin priming, seed coating and the combination of ‘humid priming + seed coating’ in improving the seed vigour characteristics of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.). In order to standardize the humid priming technique, okra seeds were subjected to humid priming for four different duration’s viz., 2, 4, 6 and 8 h, shade dried to original moisture content and subjected to evaluation of seed germination under shade net conditions in raised beds. The results revealed that 4 h of humid priming was statistically significant to the rest of the durations, with respect seed germination and seedling growth. With respect to anatomical potential, the radicle length (3.39mm), cotyledon length (6.69mm) and cotyledon width (6.30mm), recorded by humid priming (4 h) was 62.2 %, 6.4 % and 2.6 % higher than control seeds. The second experiment conducted to compare the efficacy of hydro priming, spin priming, polymer coating and combination of humid priming + seed coating. The study revealed that seeds subjected to combination of humid priming (4 h) + seed coating (3g kg-1) recorded highest physiological potential in terms of germination percentage (87 %), seedling length (20.2 cm), dry matter production (421.3 mg), vigour index (1765), root volume (3.5 cm3) and root sheath (2.560 g) while the control recorded only 70 %, 15.1 cm, 328.7 mg, 1055, 2.0 cm3 and 1.532 g, respectively.

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of electrostatic fields on seed vigor, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination of five soybean genotypes. Testing was conducted at the Novi Sad Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops on the seeds of five soybean varieties: Sava, NS 2024, NS 1347, NS 3127, and NS Blackstar. The seeds were exposed to different values of direct current (DC) of the following voltage: 0 V (control), 3 V, 6 V and 9 V, to which the seeds were exposed for 0 min (control), 1 min and 3 min. After exposing the seeds to the electric field, the vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). The results show that the effect of the electrostatic field on seed vigour, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination depends on the genotype, voltage and exposure time. The application of DC can be a suitable method for improving vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). In addition, the results indicate that it is necessary to adjust the DC treatment (voltage and duration of exposure of seeds) to a particular genotype, since inadequate treatments may deteriorate the quality of seeds. Keywords: electrostatic field, vigor index, MGR, CVG, soybean
