The aim of this study was to examine the influence of electrostatic fields on seed vigor, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination of five soybean genotypes. Testing was conducted at the Novi Sad Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops on the seeds of five soybean varieties: Sava, NS 2024, NS 1347, NS 3127, and NS Blackstar. The seeds were exposed to different values of direct current (DC) of the following voltage: 0 V (control), 3 V, 6 V and 9 V, to which the seeds were exposed for 0 min (control), 1 min and 3 min. After exposing the seeds to the electric field, the vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). The results show that the effect of the electrostatic field on seed vigour, mean rate of germination and coefficient of velocity of germination depends on the genotype, voltage and exposure time. The application of DC can be a suitable method for improving vigour index (VI), mean rate of germination (MGR) and coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG). In addition, the results indicate that it is necessary to adjust the DC treatment (voltage and duration of exposure of seeds) to a particular genotype, since inadequate treatments may deteriorate the quality of seeds.             Keywords: electrostatic field, vigor index, MGR, CVG, soybean

Abstract : The objective of this work was to apply a multivariate index of vigor in soybean seeds to identify the differential effects of the genotypes x environments interaction on the quality of the seeds produced in the 2016/2017 harvest season. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, organized in the factorial scheme, with five seed production environments x 20 soybean genotypes, arranged in four replications. The seed production environments of Tenente Portela - RS and Santa Rosa - RS soybeans are characterized as the environments that express the highest magnitude for seed vigor index, however biometrically Sarandi - RS has been defined as the optimal environment for the production of high vigor seeds according to the tested genotypes. High seed vigor index were expressed for the genotypes TMG 7161 RR, AMS Tibagi RR, BMX Magna RR, Fepagro 37 RR and NA 5909 RG. The differential effects of the genotypes x production environments interaction of soybean seeds influenced by more than 68% the vigor index of the seeds produced.

It is known that the main components of the seed storage proteins contribute to the quality of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] food products. The objective of this study was to investigate content of the two of them [glycinin (11S) and ?-conglycinin (7S) fractions] and their respective subunits on the new high-protein soybean genotypes from the Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. Subunits were resolved by SDS-PAGE and gels were analyzed by scanning densitometry. Out of 20 analyzed genotypes, the ?' and ? subunits of ?- conglycinin were significantly higher in all of the genotypes except KO531 and KO5431. The ? subunit of ?-conglycinin was significantly higher in genotypes KO535 KO5437, KO534, KO537, KO539, KO5439, KO532, KO5435, KO538, KO5438 and KO533. The acetic polypeptides of glycinin were significantly higher in genotypes KO5439, KO5437, KO5436, KO5438, KO5432, KO5435, KO5433 and KO5434. The basic polypeptides of glycinin were not significantly higher only in genotypes KO539, KO536, KO538, KO535 and KO533. In conclusion, it appears that among the new high-protein genotypes there are genotypes with different amount of subunits that should be bread in the future for a desired level of the protein components. .

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pod wall permeability on the physiological quality of soybean seed. The cultivars studied were Sant'Ana, FT-2, FT-10, Bossier, Davis and the breeding line F 84-7-30, with a black seed coat. Pods were collected from plants at the R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 development stages, which composed the treatments in regard to time of harvest. The parameters of permeability and the lignin content of the pods and the seeds within the pods were evaluated. The seeds were collected just after full maturity (R8), and the following tests were performed: germination, electrical conductivity, and tetrazolium, which determined seed viability and vigor. A randomized complete block design in a split-plot in time arrangement was used, with four replications per treatment. The soybean genotypes (six) composed the plots, and the split-plots consisted of the development stages (R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8). In seed evaluation, the same design was used, reducing the number of treatments to three in the split-plots (R6, R7 and R8). Pod permeability varied with the genotype and stage of development; this affected seed vigor, but not the viability of newly-harvested seeds. The pod lignin content did not show any influence on pod permeability.

The development of procedures enabling agility and effectiveness to the analyses of seed vigor are great advances for the seed research field. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the efficiency of the Seedling Analysis System (SAPL®) to seedling phenotyping and determining the physiological potential of soybean seeds, in comparison with the information provided by traditional vigor tests recommended for this species. The characterizing of physiological potential of the seed lots was carried out based on germination tests, first germination count, seedling emergence, cold test, and electrical conductivity. The results of these tests were compared with the data obtained using image analysis with the software SAPL®, which was used to evaluate the development seven- day old seedlings. It was obtained the length of shoot, primary root and entire seedling, growth rates, uniformity, vigor index and corrected vigor index, based on different variations of the growth/uniformity ratio, namely 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, in the vigor index calculation. Analysis of images of the seven-day old seedlings using SAPL® enables phenotyping of soybean seedlings and is a consistent and promising alternative for identifying differences in vigor between soybean seed lots, equivalent to that found with traditional vigor tests.

Deterioration of seeds during storage may reduce the supply of high-quality seeds which become the limiting ‎factor of soybean production in tropical countries. Controlled Deterioration Test (CDT) is one of the ‎fastest vigor testing methods. The objective of this study was to achieve the suitable moisture content and ‎duration of CDT treatment in soybean seed, then establish a model that associated with the seed vigor in ‎the field after a certain time of storage. Split-plot with 2 factors, namely seed varieties and the combination of ‎moisture content and heat exposure duration were used to determine the influence of CDT treatment. ‎Another split-plot for 2 factors, namely storage period and seed varieties were used to determine the effect ‎of shelf life. Viability parameters were observed by germination strength (GS) and seedling vigor index (VI), ‎using a rolled paper towel method. The results showed that there was an interaction between soybean seed ‎varieties and the combination of seed moisture content treatment with duration of CDT exposure. Sindoro ‎and Tanggamus varieties had higher viability and storability than other varieties. Combinations of 28% seed ‎moisture content for 24 hours CDT duration were sensitive enough to evaluate the physiological potential of ‎soybean seeds, providing information that was closely related to seed germination after stored for 1 month. ‎

The aim of this paper was to examine the influence of the electrostatic field on seeds of soybean (Glycine max L), vetch (Vicia spp. L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) which were selected at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The DC voltage of 9V was used. The durations of seed treatment were 0 (control), 1, 2 and 3 minutes. The trial was set up as a randomized block design with four replications. 4x100 seeds of each variant and control (untreated seed) were treated. After treatment, seed quality was examined using a germination test (optimal temperature) and a cold test (low temperature). The results of the study showed that the effect of the electrostatic field on seed quality depended on the plant species, the time of seed treatment and the temperature conditions in which the seed germinated after treatment. The increase in germination energy ranged up to 18.18% in vetch, and a decrease of up to 12% was observed in chickpea. The application of the electrostatic field had a significantly greater impact on seeds that were exposed to low temperatures in the germination process after treatment. The increase in seed germination ranged up to 82.35% in chickpeas, and the decrease amounted to 92.68% in peas. In addition, the obtained results indicate that it is not possible to talk about the universal application of a certain duration of seed treatment.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different seed coating materials and storage containers on germination, seedling vigour and suitability of packaging material for soybean seed. Seed of soybean varietyPS1024 was used for coating purpose with 6 coating treatments viz., T0 (control), T1 (Polymer coating i.e. Polykote @ 3 ml kg-1 of seed diluted with 5 ml of water), T2 (Flowable Thiram i.e. Royal flow 40 SC @ 2.4 ml kg-1 of seed), T3 (T1 + T2), T4 (Vitavax 200 i.e.thiram 37.5 % and carboxyl 37.5% @ 2 g kg-1 of seed and T5(T1+ T4). The coated seeds were stored in two kinds of containers i.e. jute canvas bag, high density poly ethylene (HDPE) non- laminated bag and bimonthly observation on germination and seedling vigour were recorded. After 8th month of storage, germination and vigour index in polythene bag stored seeds were significantly higher than the seed stored in cloth bag. Among seed coating treatments, maximum %germination was recorded in polymer coating @ 3 ml kg-1 followed by vitavax 200 @ 2 g kg-1of seed treatment (T5) which was significantly higher than rest of the coated treatment including untreated control seeds (T0 ). Similarly, maximum seed vigour index was observed in T5 and minimum vigor index was recorded with T0 (untreated control). DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/sja.v12i2.21913 SAARC J. ABSTRACT Obtaining image-based information is a powerful approach to capture and quantify seed vigor data. However, commercial systems that facilitate the processing and acquisition of images are often cost prohibitive. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the Seedling Analysis System (Sistema de Análise de Plântulas - SAPL®), in order to analyze the physiological potential of soybean seeds, in comparison with the information provided by vigor tests which are traditionally recommended for this species. Nine lots of soybean seeds were submitted to germination, germination speed, seedling emergence, cold test and electrical conductivity tests. In the SAPL® analyzes, seedlings of four and six days, counted from the beginning of the germination test, were evaluated, resulting in values for seedling length, growth, development uniformity, vigor index and corrected vigor index. The evaluated lots with emergence greater than 90 % showed a vigor index higher than 600 and 800, respectively in the fourth and sixth days. The indexes generated by SAPL®, except for the uniformity index, presented positive and high correlations with the traditional tests (> 0.80). SAPL® is efficient in identifying differences in the vigor of soybean seed lots.

In this study, the effect of five different levels of salt (NaCl) on the germination of Phaseolus vulgaris L. seed was investigated. Laboratory experiment with completely randomized design comprising three replicates in Petri dishes was conducted at Gaziantep University Vocational School of Higher Education in Nurdagi to determine the salt effects on common bean germination. The germination of the cultivar (Tegmen) was studied using distilled water (control) and under osmotic potential of 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, and 1.5 MPa NaCl. The results indicated that the Mean germination time (MGT), Germination index (GI), Coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG), Germination percentage (GP), and Seed vigor index (SVI) varied between 3.13 and 3.78 days, 6.88 and 3.93, 0.156 and 0.153, 90 and 60%, and 867.0 and 290.3, respectively. Significant differences were found among NaCl treatments in terms of GI, GP, and SVI. All the examined parameters were decreased with increasing NaCl concentration, except MGT. The max and min GI, GP, CVG, and SVI were observed at the control condition (0.0 MPa) and highest osmotic potential (1.5 MPa) of NaCl, respectively. Correlation coefficient between all possible combinations was estimated and the results indicated that MGT, GI, GP, CVG, and SVI had significant positive or negative correlation with each other.

In the experiment, a new non-destructive method for discriminating three vigour of soybean seeds was developed by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with principal component and Mahalanobis distance model. The result show that NORMALIZE was the best pretreatment method of NORMALIZE, MSC, First Derivative and Second Derivative, the ideal spectral acquisition range of Soybean seed was 4000cm-1~6900cm-1, the cumulative contribution rate of the front four principal components reached 99.82%, it established the best model. The model could successfully complete the calibration samples and identify the prediction sample. This study proved that the use of near infrared spectroscopy combined with pattern recognition methods to rapid and nondestructive determination of seed vigor was indeed feasible. This study will offer a new method of testing soybean seed vigour with quick, non-destructive characters.
