The diversity microbial in ethanolic fermentation generate different behavior metabolic that depended on the microorganisms present. Some kinetic parameters can tell how interactions between microorganisms are occurring in fermentation and can also predict your metabolic behaviors. However, there are little studys about the influence of interactions microbial on kinetic parameters in fermentation sugar cane. Therefore, this work aimed to understand the influence of the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae CAT-1, MONA, PE-2 and ATCC in the production of biomass, ethanol, glycerol and sugar consumption, as well as to evaluate the kinetic parameters by means of response surface methodology for mixing. From the biomass models generated, it was observed that the yeasts ATCC and MONA when in the presence of CAT-1 and PE-2 showed antagonisms. For the ethanol, the synergistic effect was verified for the mixture MONA/ATCC and CAT-1/PE-2 being that CAT-1 and PE-2 were the yeasts that strongly favored the ethanol production. It stands out yeast MONA due to having lower glycerol production, character desirable in the sugar and alcohol industry. Thus, it is clear that from the analysis employed it was possible to infer about the kinetic behavior of the yeasts in pure cultures as well as the effect of the interaction between them during the cultivation.

ABSTRACT On the basis of knowledge of the biological role of glycerol in the redox balance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a fermentation strategy was defined to reduce the surplus formation of NADH, responsible for glycerol synthesis. A metabolic model was used to predict the operating conditions that would reduce glycerol production during ethanol fermentation. Experimental validation of the simulation results was done by monitoring the inlet substrate feeding during fed-batch S. cerevisiae cultivation in order to maintain the respiratory quotient (RQ) (defined as the CO2 production to O2 consumption ratio) value between 4 and 5. Compared to previous fermentations without glucose monitoring, the final glycerol concentration was successfully decreased. Although RQ-controlled fermentation led to a lower maximum specific ethanol production rate, it was possible to reach a high level of ethanol production: 85 g · liter−1 with 1.7 g · liter−1 glycerol in 30 h. We showed here that by using a metabolic model as a tool in prediction, it was possible to reduce glycerol production in a very high-performance ethanolic fermentation process.

In this research work, the quantitative characterization of a binary blend comprised of two pozzolans (sugar cane straw (SCSA)–sugar cane bagasse ashes (SCBA), bamboo leaf ash (BLAsh)–SCBA and paper sludge (PS)–fly ash (FA)) taking into account the calculated values of the kinetic parameters of the reaction in the pozzolan/calcium hydroxide system is shown. The paper shows the most significant and important results obtained by the authors in the quantitative assessment (calculation of kinetic parameters) of the pozzolanic reaction of different mixtures of pozzolanic materials that are residues from agriculture or industrial processes. This allows a direct and rigorous comparison of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials. The values of the kinetic parameters (reaction rate constant or activation free energy) constitute a very precise quantitative index of the pozzolanic activity of the binary combinations of materials, which is very useful for its employment in the elaboration of ternary cements. This paper shows that the binary blends 1SCBA60Blash40, 1SCBA50Blash50, 1SCBA70Blash30 have a very high pozzolanic reactivity followed by PSLSFA, 2SCBA50SCSA50, PSISFA and SCWI.

The seaweeds are bio-resource rich in sulfated and neutral polysaccharides. The tropical seaweed species used in this study (Solieria filiformis), after dried, shows 65.8% (w/w) carbohydrate, 9.6% (w/w) protein, 1.7% (w/w) lipid, 7.0% (w/w) moisture and 15.9% (w/w) ash. The dried seaweed was easily hydrolyzed under mild conditions (0.5 M sulfuric acid, 20 min.), generating fermentable monosaccharides with a maximum hydrolysis efficiency of 63.21%. Galactose and glucose present in the hydrolyzed were simultaneously fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae when the yeast was acclimated to galactose and cultivated in broth containing only galactose. The kinetic parameters of the fermentation of the seaweed hydrolyzed were Y(P⁄S) = 0.48 ± 0.02 g.g−1, PP = 0.27 ± 0.04 g.L−1.h−1, h = 94.1%, representing a 41% increase in bioethanol productivity. Therefore, S. filiformis was a promising renewable resource of polysaccharides easily hydrolyzed, generating a broth rich in fermentable monosaccharides for ethanol production.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a riboflavin assay strain of Lactobacillus casei have been propagated anaerobically in mixed culture. Both batch and continuous culture techniques were used. By varying the concentrations of glucose and riboflavin in the growth medium, it was possible to produce symbioses of commensalism + competition, competition, and mutualism + competition. In short, the interaction prevailing is determined by the medium as well as by the genetic characteristics of the organisms. The behavior of the mixed cultures in these situations was predicted from data taken on pure cultures of the organisms.
