The main objective of this study is to confirm the potentials of Moringa oleifera seeds over alum for water purification. Various doses of Moringa seed powder 4, 8, 12 g/l were taken and checked for treatment of river and sewage water. After treatment of seed powder with water samples were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters like pH, Absorbance, TDS, TSS, Hardness, Chlorides, Conductivity, Turbidity, MPN and DO. Almost all parameters showed reduction with increasing dosage of Moringa seed powder. Similar doses of alum were checked with river water sample and were analyzed for above mentioned parameters. The results obtained showed that seed powder (natural coagulant) is more effective than conventional chemical coagulant., alum. The seed of Moringa oleifera is cheap, eco-friendly and non-toxic, can be effectively used as a coagulant for river and sewage water purification.

Water samples were collected from three points of Louhajong river (Dighulia, Kagmari Bridge and Oloa) to see the seasonal variation in physico-chemical parameters. The results revealed that some of the parameters such as TDS, alkalinity and acidity have exceeded the standard level in dry season in all of the points, which are unsuitable for different purposes including fish culture. During dry and wet seasons the highest concentrations of BOD was recorded as 2.0 and 0.8 ppm at Kagmari Bridge (point-2) respectively. DO ranged from 1.4 to 3.1 and 2.4 to 3.8 ppm during dry and wet seasons. Maximum and minimum EC was recorded as 890 and 130 ?s/cm at Dighulia (point-1) during dry and wet seasons. The results suggest that at wet season Louhajong river may be suitable for fish culture and other purposes.Bangladesh J. Sci. Res. 28(1): 9-16, June-2015

This article reports on the level of contamination of effluents, sediments and water in the Poty River, within the city of Teresina. The samples were collected in the months of September 2009, December 2009 and March 2010. The results of some physico-chemical parameters investigated, as well as the concentrations of lead, copper and nickel found in the river water samples showed that the body of water in the Poty River is unsuitable for use in various activities. These activities include direct recreational usage and primary irrigation of vegetables that are eaten raw as well as fruits that are eaten without removing films, among others.

The study assessed the effect of waste dumpsites on groundwater quality of upper aquifers in Port Harcourt. Water samples were retrieved from hand-dug wells from a dumpsite and a control site and analyzed for physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal content. Results show that electrical conductivity of the dumpsite water samples was 42.06μS/cm while the control site water samples recorded 31.27μS/cm. Turbidity of the water samples ranged from 0.62NTU-0.65NTU. Total Dissolved Solids of the dumpsite water sample was 26.8mg/l while the TDS of the control site water sample was 33.70mg/l. The pH of water samples from both sites ranged from 5.46 -7.34. The pH of water samples from the dumpsite was slightly acidic (5.46). The average temperature of the water samples was approximately 28oC. Phosphate concentration of water samples ranged from 0.32 mg/l-0.54 mg/l while chloride levels ranged from 10.60mg/l-17.12 mg/l. All physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal content of the water samples all fell within the WHO and NSDWQ stipulated standards except for the lead concentration of the water sample retrieved from the dumpsite. The study also revealed that waste dumpsites did not alter the concentration of the measured physico-chemical properties and heavy metal concentration of water samples. However, the study recommended that periodic assessments of groundwater quality of waste dumpsites should be undertaken

In the current study, the quality of ground water (GW) from an area of western part of Jorhat district of Assam (India) was assessed in order to ensure the safety of its use in irrigation and drinking purposes. The physico-chemical parameters of the collected GW samples were evaluated and compared the data with the Indian Standards (IS) for drinking purposes. The investigation was mainly emphasised on the evaluation of Water Quality Index (WQI) and different parameters for the quality measurement of water for drinking and irrigation purposes, respectively. Correlations among the physico-chemical parameters were evaluated through statistical analysis. The physico-chemical parameters revealed that almost all the parameters except iron were within the permissible limit. Arsenic was found to be present in few water samples in both seasons (pre and post monsoon). In both the seasons, the WQI of the majority of collected water samples were observed to be falling under the poor category for drinking. Almost all the collected water samples were found to be fit for irrigation purposes. However, based on sodium percentage (Na %), Kelly’s ratio (KR), and Magnesium ratio (MR), few of the water samples are classified to be doubtful and inappropriate for irrigation.

The Narmada, also called Rewa is a river in central India and the fifth largest river in the Indian Subcontinent. The bank of Narmada river is covered by tribal people, and their daily wastes are drained into this holy river, which alters the Physico-chemical parameters of the river. Water is one of the most important of all natural resources known on earth. It is important to all living organisms, ecological systems, human health, food production and economic development. The present study was carried out for a period of one year to enumerate the various Physico-chemical parameters of Narmada River. Water samples were taken from sampling stations every month and were analyzed as per standard methods. Maximum of Phosphate, Nitrate, Calcium and Sulphate were recorded in September and October and Maximum of Temperature, pH, and Total hardness were observed during summer. Transparency was recorded maximum in winter and minimum in rainy season. DO concentration was higher in winter and lower in summer. The results indicated that most of the Physico- chemical characteristics of Narmada water samples were within the WHO limits.

An attempt has been made to study the Physico-chemical condition of water of Yamuna River at Gokul Barrage, Mathura, (UP). The time period of study was July 2015 to June 2016. Three water samples were selected from different sites in each month for study. The parameters studied were Temperature, Turbidity, pH, DO, BOD, COD, Total Dissolved Solids and Suspended Solids. Almost all the parameters were found above the tolerance limit.

Water quality assessment has been carried out in the Hakaluki Haor of greater Sylhet district during May, 2013 to February, 2014. Water samples were collected from 5 spots during 4 seasons and a total of 15 physico-chemical parameters were studied. Significant seasonal variation was observed in all seasons among physico-chemical parameters. pH values varied from 5.9 - 7.1, water temperature varied from 23.7 – 26.7OC, transference varied from 23-53 cm, TSS varied from 18.1-192 mg/l, TDS varied 25-193.5 mg/l, EC varied from 30-680 ?s/cm , DO content of water varied from 4.6 - 5.6mg/l, BOD varied from 0.2-2.614 mg/l, COD varied from 38-312 mg/l, NO3-N varied from 0.1-30.4 mg/l, NH3 varied from 0.9-2.18 mg/l, alkalinity varied from 12-42 mg/l and PO4 varied from 0.9 -13.4 (mg/l). In this project, Polluted water sample from a Pond is collected for treating it by using Natural Coagulants. The pond is located in Madarpakkam Village, near Gummudipoondi, Tamilnadu, India. There were 4 water samples collected from four different points around the pond at depth of 0.5m, 1m, 1.5m and 2m. The water samples were analyzed for physical and chemical parameters with reference to the code IS 10500-1991. The objective of this project is to reduce the level of turbidity and bacteriological contaminants from water using locally available Natural Coagulants and to reduce the concentration of particular matter such as suspended particles, parasites, bacteria, algae, virus and fungi and to make use of the treated water for domestic purpose, as it reduces cost about 30% to 70%, the usage of these Natural coagulants will be more in future. It is nontoxic and non-corrosive. So, it is safe for human health. The usage of Natural coagulants can be increased in future as it increases the Water quality.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to make sure that the Bird valley’s quarry water is suitable for drinking purposes or not and to monitor the seasonal variations in the physico-chemical parameters of this quarry water. Methodology: Water samples from the quarry were collected in clean and sterilized polyethylene bottles. Water samples were collected from different points and mixed together to get an integrated sample. Some of the selected physico-chemical parameters of the quarry water have been analyzed. Results were compared with standard limits of IS: 10500-2012. All the parameters were analyzed in the laboratory by using standard methods and techniques. Main Findings: As per the obtained results this quarry water contains a very large number of Coliforms detected in the months of September and December and in June month Coliform count was 33 CFU/ml. This overall result for coliform is making this quarry water unfit for domestic purposes. Applications of this study: This study helps us to understand the current condition of this quarry water and also enables us to know whether the quarry water is fit for drinking purposes. It also enables us to know whether this quarry water can be used for domestic purposes after the treatment. Novelty/Originality of this study: Bird valley’s quarry water has not been analyzed from this point of view till date. This study will help us to understand the present condition of the water.
