This study aimed to synthesize the best available qualitative research evidence on nurse educators’ experiences with student incivility in undergraduate nursing classrooms. A meta-synthesis of qualitative evidence using thematic synthesis was conducted. A systematic search was performed of 12 databases for relevant literature published by March 31, 2019. Two reviewers independently conducted critical quality appraisals using the checklist for qualitative research developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Eleven studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected for review. From the pooled study findings, 26 descriptive themes were generated and categorized into the following 5 analytical themes: (1) factors contributing to student incivility, (2) management of student incivility, (3) impact: professional and personal damage, (4) impact: professional growth, and (5) initiatives for the future. Many nurse educators became confident in their role of providing accountability as both educators and gatekeepers and experienced professional growth. However, others experienced damage to their personal and professional life and lost their motivation to teach. Nurse educators recommended the following strategies for preventing or better managing student incivility: institutional efforts by the university, unified approaches for student incivility within a nursing program, a faculty-to-faculty network for mentoring, and better teaching and learning strategies for individual educators. These strategies would help all nurse educators experience professional growth by successfully preventing and managing student incivility.

We argue that while the discipline of nursing aligns with the ideals of social justice and anti-racism, it has been challenging for nurse educators to translate these ideals into practice. In this discussion paper, we explore these challenges. Of note, there is little guidance for nurse educators to support student knowledge development in addressing the complex issues surrounding anti-racist and anti-discriminatory practice. Accordingly, we utilized Peggy Chinn’s Peace and Power framework as a guide to develop an anti-racist practice that is underpinned by critical pedagogy. Our aim is to provide teaching and learning strategies for nurse educators to address racism, discrimination, and oppression in undergraduate nursing learning environments. Implications of this article include guidance for nurse educators who are committed to anti-racist pedagogical practice.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to look at how employability is currently embedded within courses to prepare students for their transition into the world of work, identifying the teaching and learning strategies employed. Design/methodology/approach A review of the relevant literature was conducted. The study analysed experiential data and the logged reports of student work placements over a period of five years, to determine the relationship of such placements to both academic results and long term employability. The study considered placements from the viewpoints of the university, students and employers. It proceeded to look at the current embedding of employability within the teaching curriculum, specifically teaching and learning strategies for personal professional development courses and the employability passport. It also looked at the role of the work placement tutor. Findings The main revelation was that the employability skills sought by employers were mostly “soft” and therefore behaviours, rather than “hard” teachable skills, which has significant implications for the introduction of the teaching excellence framework (TEF) and the provision of suitable metrics. Research limitations/implications The study and findings are limited to a single university in the UK. Originality/value The results of the study and conclusions drawn from the analysis of findings, led to the identification of the student, institution, tutor, employer) quartet of actors for employability. The paper also postulates the ramifications of the introduction of the TEF on employability.

AbstractMaintaining scholarship while delivering an undergraduate nursing program is a challenge for nursing faculty. In this paper, we describe an approach that involves undergraduate nursing students in a program of faculty research, which evaluates new approaches to teaching and learning. Students work with faculty to develop a research proposal, identifying specific questions and exploring relevant literature. Projects may include original data collection with faculty supervision, or secondary analysis of existing datasets. Foci have included partnership learning between nursing students and older adults, models of sustainability for a traveling health clinic, and experiences of aging. Findings and recommendations feed into the broader faculty research agenda, provide a foundation for subsequent projects, and inform further development of educational programs. Students have presented at local and national conferences and developed papers for publication based on this joint work. We describe the benefits and challenges of these partnerships, drawing upon student and faculty reflections.

The university extension activities are a form of interaction between the university and the community, and based on it, different health promotion activities can be developed, as the sustainable development of vulnerable communities for example. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can present asymptomatic or symptomatic forms and has affected countless people around the world. In Brazil, the number of infected people has increased over the years, even with the SUS providing treatment, which is quite worrying due to congenital syphilis. With the growth of infected people in the country, especially in the state of Pernambuco, it is essential to fight syphilis through preventive actions. Teaching and learning strategies such as health education demonstrate the transforming role of university extension for undergraduates and society, aiming to contribute to the academic training of undergraduates through the exchange of knowledge. The activities to raise awareness about syphilis were held in a conversation circle during the Science and Technology Week, CECINE-UFPE/2019, and in the Parasitology course at UFPE. At the end of each exhibition, information leaflets and condoms were also distributed. At first, the students were shy when they saw illustrated panels with syphilitic lesions and condoms on the benches. However, as the interaction progressed, they were amazed by the epidemiology, exposing their doubts and prior knowledge on the subject. With each new action, the extension workers understood more about the social commitment and demonstrated more security. Thus, the project contributes to the academic training of undergraduates, providing the development of educational practices with students, who become agents for disseminating knowledge in the fight and prevention of syphilis in their social spaces.

This chapter presents a theoretical framework and research base for the successful transition of an established Master of Science in Nursing program from that of traditional classroom delivery to one that is Web-based with no geographic limitations to students. The application of socio-technical systems theory to facilitate creation of a positive learning environment for future nurse leaders is described. Use of social processes and application of technology to optimize learning is explained and the latest research on content presentation and student engagement in an e-learning environment are presented. The authors hope that through examination of successful online teaching/learning strategies, readers will have a clear understanding of the competencies necessary for students and faculty to be successful in online education.

The purposes of this research are analyze the effectiveness of online learning strategies used during teaching and learning activities and analyze the obstacles experienced during online teaching and learning activities. The research method used is qualitative descriptive research. Qualitative research is a research that is descriptive and describes the object of research/events studied and using analysis. The research results were obtained through extracting data through interview, observation, and documentation. Some data will be loaded in the form of diagram to show the research results obtained. The conclusion obtained is that this research is a descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe the learning strategies at Muhammadiyah 10 Junior High School Sidoarjo in English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Language advising helps a language learner discover different ways of learning and enables him/her to make decisions for better learning. This paper reports on an inquiry conducted with one English language learner who had difficulty with vocabulary acquisition which led to a perceived lack of progress in learning. The main purpose of the research was to observe and interpret the experience of the learner in terms of how different teaching and learning strategies appeared to affect her vocabulary learning. Qualitative research instruments including a semi-structured interview and a diary were used for this study. The results showed an increase in the learner’s control over her vocabulary learning process which was likely facilitated by the incorporation of language advising strategies into individual private tutoring.

This article intends to discuss the learning management of Tanfîzh al-Qur’an at Islamic Boarding Schools in Lampung Province. Teaching and learning activities need the planning, organizing, implementing and controlling actio. These management functions play a crucial role to  perfect learning tahfizh al-Qur’an. This is qualitative research while data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analyzed by reduction, presentation, and conclusion. Research concluded that the management functions have been carried out on tahfizh al-Qur’an in Islamic boarding schools, but at different intensities. In the planning aspect, generally they do not have written planning as in other formal schools or madrasah. In the organization of teaching materials, teaching strategies and learning media, all of them have in common. And with regard to the learning strategies they use the same principles of memorizing, depositing, and repeating memorization, even though in each boarding schools they have different terms, but same in principle.Keywords: Management, Learning, Tanfîzh Al-Qur’an

This chapter examines student performance in Human Physiology and Biology in response to a number of interactive language-focused and career-oriented interventions that were integrated into both lecture and tutorial formats. The study took place at the University of Newcastle, Australia and involved around 1000 students on two campuses. Although it was not possible to demonstrate a clear overall improvement in student performance as a result of these interventions, the activities were viewed positively by the majority of students. Arguably, the major impact of the language and other interventions was in the level of student motivation and engagement with the course topic. Contemporary university students are highly focused on the relevance of a course to their chosen career path, suggesting that language-based teaching and learning strategies would be most effective if placed within a vocation-specific context.

Self-care is imperative to personal health, sustenance to continue to care for others, and professional growth. This article briefly reviews stressors common to students and nurses and the importance of practicing self-care to combat stress and promote health in practice. Florida Atlantic University offers a course for all levels of undergraduate nursing students called Caring for Self. The course, supported by principles of Adult Learning Theory, focuses on guiding the nurse to practice and model self-care. The author describes the evolution of this self-care initiative by discussing the needs assessment, course description and strategies, examples of course activities, and an exemplar of student impact. The conclusion offers discussion of challenges and lessons noted by faculty and students.
