Rapid response When the Minister of Education and Culture issued Circular Letter No. 3 of 2020 concerning the Prevention of Covid-19 must be taken to take effective prevention and mitigation measures for the outbreak that has now become a global pandemic. This article analyzes the implementation of online learning in the era of independent learning and independent campus under COVID-19 conditions. With library research methods that refer to resources available online, this article presents a perspective of service activist learning about strategies to deal with conditions that are difficult to predict. From the results of theoretical analysis, there is no uniformity of understanding of information about the characteristics of the plague in the government as a regulator, discussing the understanding of the main definitions related to the problem of online learning with the perspective of independent learning and independent campuses. The choice that most allows lecturers in 'free teaching' so that they focus more on efforts to transfer knowledge and skills to students. The policy can also encourage students to be more innovative and creative in learning (student-centered learning) is online. The physical encounter will not be abandoned even though advances in virtual and digital technology have thickened. Although the COVID-19 outbreak will last a long time, there is no harm in having to think about patterns and methods of physical and social learning that are safe for everyone. The development of communication and digital technology has a significant role that can be utilized as widely as possible by academia to look brighter future.

It is argued that the digital technology has made possible the vast range of applications and media forms including virtual reality, digital special effects, digital film, digital television, electronic music, computer games, multimedia, the Internet, the World Wide Web, digital telephony and so on [8]. Digital transformation has been particularly influential in new directions of society.Providing schools with digital technology promises a high return on investment. The presence of computers and Internet access raises technology literacy and skills, better preparing the future generations to participate in the information society [12]. To this end, schools represent ideal access points because they cover a large part of the population, especially in developing countries. Starting from 1990s, many educators have been realised the potential of Internet for educational purposes and began to introduce it into classrooms. According to [10] the popularity of web-based teaching and learning lies in the strengths of its distributed nature and the case of its browsing facility. Both the use of digital technology and increased interest in student-centered learning may lead to a significant change of the teacher’s role, as well as the recognition of the active role of the learner in the learning process.

This action research reports the experiences of introducing blended learning in the delivery of a post-graduate course to students in the university. The research conceptual framework is adapted from the technology acceptance model. The objective is to assess the level of acceptance of online learning and to document the attempts of the facilitator to create an independent, student-directed, and student-centered learning environment. This is the fourth quadrant learning typology. The research participants were a group of Masters in Education students who registered for the course “Strategies for Teaching and Learning.” Blended learning was introduced as a variant from the standard face-to-face instruction. This proved to be a valuable learning experience for both participants and lecturer. The perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of online learning was not matched with the behavioral intention.

The nature of learning is changing, especially learning in the twenty-first century. It's increasingly becoming more to do with student-centered learning. It emphasizes digital literacy, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. This chapter revisited online learning environments in terms of differences in the learning styles of Nigerian university students according to their cultural backgrounds. The author also reviewed past research that focused on culturally different learning styles in online learning environments. Of specific interest are the studies that examined the same issue in the twenty-first century. This chapter concluded based on the review of literature that a person's learning style could affect how they react to any learning situation, including learning online; therefore, knowledge of learning styles could help in the selection of appropriate instructional designs and teaching strategies for courses. In the case of the students at the University of Lagos, it was found that students with different learning styles have different responses to online learning within their culture.

The astonishing popularity of social media and its emergence into the education arena has shown tremendous potential for innovations in teaching and learning. It enables student-centered learning in a more collaborative and interactive way in the online learning environment. However, few research has been conducted about how to use social media appropriately and effectively in Science education. The main purposes of this project is to explore the experience and perceptions of teachers with relevant teaching experience in using social media for K12 Science education, including the current level and scope of social media use, perception of utility, and its potential impact on science education. The implications, considerations, and challenges for and against the possible use of social media in science education were discussed with possible further research suggestions.

The sudden switch to online learning brought an unintended spotlight to the gradually expanding educational innovation of online instruction. Online learning has generally been stigmatized as less effective than traditional face-to-face learning. The learning of students tends to be influenced by teachers’ individual differences and perceptions of online learning. In this study, we describe the development of a new perceptions of online learning scale (POOLS). The POOLS seeks to measure perceptions of online learning across four theoretical constructs associated with quality education in both online and traditional face-to-face formats. Existing measures to assess perceptions of or readiness for online learning are learner-focused and could not reflect the psychological foundation of the teacher population. The POOLS was constructed using expert review and a sample of 654 adults responded to the survey. We conducted an exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis on split halves of these data. The results of this initial validation study provide the basis for using the POOLS as an approach to measuring four aspects of perceptions of online learning: Effective Learning (ω^2 = 0.75), Student-Centered Learning (ω^2 = 0.69), Interactive Learning (ω^2 = 0.72), and Engaged Learning (ω^2 = 0.68). We recommend that the POOLS be used at an aggregate level to describe the general relationship between these factors and other characteristics such as self-efficacy, amount or type of experience with online learning, and personality traits.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the learning styles that nursing graduates employed during the course of their BSN programme. Methods: Within a sequential, explanatory mixed methods design a survey was administered to determine graduates’ learning styles. From a population of 384 graduates, a sample of 200 agreed to participate. Data were collected using the Grasha-Riechmann Learning Styles Scales. MS Excel was used to enter the learning styles scores; descriptive statistics were computed using the statistical package SPSS Version 16.0.Results: The most dominant and preferred learning styles are Competitive learning style (x̄ = 3.98; SD = 0.52) and Avoidant learning style (x̄ = 3.88; SD = 0.68). Both are teacher-centered learning styles that do not promote learner independence, confidence, critical thinking and active learning. The least preferred is the Independent Learning Style (x̄ = 2.84; SD = 0.80). Implications for student-centered learning are inferred from the results. Conclusions: Graduates’ preference for the Competitive and Avoidant learning styles reflects an alignment with a teacher-centered paradigm and lack of diversity in use of learning styles during their study. The preferred learning styles detract from student-centered learning and point to an approach to teaching that integrates Socratic and facilitative methods to promote diversity of learning styles. As the educational paradigm shifts towards student-centered learning there is mounting pressure on educators to have better understanding on students’ preferred learning styles and adopt variety of pedagogical strategies to optimize ways students learn.

The American Physiological Society (APS) Teaching Section annually honors an educator through its Claude Bernard Distinguished Lecture at the Experimental Biology meeting. Since I knew about my selection for almost a year, I had a long time to think about what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it. The theme of my presentation was “nothing in education makes sense except in the light of student learning.” My presentation began with a video of my “And, But, Therefore” description of my educational scholarship (see Randy Olson Great Challenges Day at TEDMED 2013, Ref. 10). “Physiology is the basic foundation of all the health professions AND physiology can be hard for students to figure out BUT many physiology courses expect students to memorize a large number of facts; THEREFORE, my scholarship is to help students learn physiology better for the long-term with various types of student-centered learning opportunities.” To stress the goal of student-centered learning, my brief video was followed by a 2-min video of one of my students describing her experiences with student-centered learning in one of my two-semester Advanced Human Physiology classes. Since I have been convinced that Randy Olson is an expert on science communication (11), the rest of my presentation was the story about how I have evolved from a sage-on-the-stage lecturer into a student-centered learning facilitator. I have chosen Olson's “And, But, Therefore” approach to narrative for this written version of key aspects of the presentation.
