This chapter outlines the feminist methodology deployed in the analysis of the case studies, which involved adopting a woman-centred approach to research and aims to gain a more nuanced understanding of the co-offending women’s experiences and stories (Letherby, 2003). The chapter also discusses the benefits of using a case study approach in criminological research and critically considers the strengths and limitations of this particular method. Finally, the chapter identifies the sources of data used i.e. newspaper articles and case and court file documents, which are used as a comparative/ corroborative tool, as well as discussing the feminist framework developed for analysis. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the benefits of using a similar approach to data collection and analysis in other criminological research.

This paper considers how to reduce corruption and improve governance, with particular attention to the impacts of information and communication technology. The media and the press in particular have played an important role in opposing corruption. The Internet and related tools are both supplementing and supplanting the traditional roles of the press in opposing corruption. A regression model with a sample of 164 countries demonstrates that, controlling for the independent variables commonly employed in empirical work on corruption, greater access to the Internet explains reduced corruption. The effect is statistically significant albeit modest. It is possible that the social media will have a growing impact on reducing corruption and improving governance. A number of examples of current uses of these media are provided. Recent insight and experience suggest how the newer information and communication technologies are somewhat tipping the balance toward those opposing corruption.

SummaryThe article analyses social discourses about the Internet in Italy from the mid-1990s onwards, taking its examples from advertising. Beyond the individual campaigns and their subjects there have been two distinct trends in Internet advertising. The first has made an effort to build the Internet as a cognitive object, the second has presented the Internet as a ‘possible world'. The article aims to account for the ways in which the Web has been thematized in Italy: its fields of reference, and how its possible social and personal uses have been anticipated.

The past decade has seen the development of a perspective holding that technology is socially constructed. This paper examines the social construction of one group of technologies, systems for computer supported cooperative work (CSCW). It compares the design of systems for computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) in Scandinavia and Japan with particular attention to the influence of culture on the resulting products. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the argument that culture is an important factor in technology design, despite commonly held assumptions about the neutrality and objectivity of science and technology. The paper further proposes an explanation for why, despite similar technical backgrounds and research interests, CSCW design is conducted differently and produces different results in Denmark and Japan. It argues that, by looking at CSCW systems as texts which reflect the context of their production and the society from which they come, we may be better able to understand the transformations that operate when these texts are ‘read’ in the contexts of their implementation.

This article examines social interactions in a Danish online social-casual games community using the Danish social constructs of Hygge and Janteloven. Hygge relates to notions of home, family, safety, and security in small, sheltered surroundings, while Janteloven is a subversive attempt to codify the unwritten rules that enforce equality (or mediocrity) in Scandinavian societies. Off-line, Hygge exists in physical environments where a safe, social atmosphere can be created, similar to sociability in physical third places. In the online setting, we identify the social construction of shared interpersonal spaces where Hygge is achieved and regulated through perceived fairness with respect to constitutive and regulative rules. A sense of belonging moderates players’ behaviors toward others and even their achievements in the game to maintain harmony. The article offers a unique examination of social constructs online, contributing to the knowledge of Danish culture and of how local cultures shape online behaviors.

Methodological proposal to analyze sociotechnical phenomena on the internet Abstract: We cannot argue that human experiences are linked to the vigorous technological expansion of electronic means of communication. This study aims at examining how Indonesia COVID-19 Task Force, as the government's right hand man, uses Framing Theory in the press statement contents, to convince the public that the handling of COVID-19 in Indonesia has been good enough. The analysis was carried out on the content of the COVID-19 Task Force press statement from September to November 2020 when there were spikes in COVID-19 cases during that period. This research uses the social construction paradigm, to find out what kind of news framing is being carried out by the COVID-19 Handling Task Force related to news about the COVID-19 case through Murray Edelman's framing analysis. By using Murray Edelman's framing analysis, this study tries to reveal the framing of the press release of the COVID-19 Handling Task Force to form a direct public understanding that the handling of COVID-19 in Indonesia is well. The results of the analysis showed that the positive COVID-19 handling task force used a categorization framing with the titles of press statements, the majority of which only mentioned about the recovery of COVID-19 patients, such as: The Number of COVID-19 Patients Continues to Increase to 429,807 People; COVID-19 Testing Results Show 86% Confirmed Negative; Number of Testing Week Third of November Approaches WHO Standards.
