Throughout her life, Elizabeth Bowen maintained a rich network of artist friends and acquaintances. She often attended exhibitions and was an astute, sometimes caustic critic in letters as well as reviews. Her short tenure as an art student is an often mentioned but rarely, if ever, explored biographical fact, yet it was a key moment in her creative development. It is perhaps unsurprising then that she began to write while ‘still under the influence of … the wish to paint.’ This essay considers Bowen's significant relationship with the visual arts, from her art training and networks to her critical engagement and deeply visual prose. In childhood, Bowen was taught to paint by Elizabeth Yeats and forged a lasting friendship with Mainie Jellett, one of Ireland's great modernists. In 1918, Bowen enrolled at the LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts but, convinced she lacked the requisite artistic talent, she withdrew from her studies after only two terms. This sense of failure plunged her into an artistic crisis from which writing offered a creative way forward. Tellingly, Bowen later reflected that her earliest stories ‘had the character of a last hope’. In describing the best of her writing as ‘verbal painting’, Bowen offers us a lens through which to conceptualise the dynamic dialogue between her more experimental prose and visual modernism. Drawing together aspects of her artistic formation, milieu, and taste, this essay ultimately seeks to provide a series of layered contexts to enrich our understanding of Bowen's fictions, including The Last September (1929) and To the North (1932).

Siegfried Bing (Hamburg 1838-Paris 1905) and August Bing (Hamburg 1852-Kassel 1918) led the West’s exposure to and interpretation of Japanese arts and crafts at the turn of the nineteenth century. Their collecting, curating and sharing gave rise to an epoch of new artistic feeling in Western visual arts (figs 1 and 2). With August managing the family’s enterprises in Japan and China (1879-1889), Siegfried overseeing the Parisian gallery of Asian art which was to become the Maison de l’Art Nouveau in 1895, and Siegfried’s brother-in-law Michael Baer, Germany’s Honorary Consul in Tokyo, also active, the Bing family exhibited a connoisseurship and taste for adventure that redefined the collecting and making of art. The family’s travels, artistic discoveries and collecting of Asian objects became widely known through Siegfried Bing’s writings, the efforts of researchers to retrace the gallery’s inventory, and recent scholarship and exhibitions devoted to Siegfried Bing. My family worked from 2004 to 2009 to continue to preserve the Bing legacy by re-securing the hitherto undiscovered photographic, cartographic, business and personal correspondence archives of Siegfried and August Bing and Michael Baer. The efforts of my son Ira, his wife Genevieve, my wife Maru and me, which between us involved five journeys to Montevideo, Uruguay, are recounted here.

This article presents reflections from a participatory visual arts-based research study with individuals seeking asylum in the north-east of England. This study invited participants to represent their lived experiences through biographical and visual methods. In doing so, they engaged in a process of ethno-mimesis, accomplished through the production of images that function as sites for meaning making, self-representation and social critique. This article demonstrates how an arts-based approach can stimulate change and transformation in individuals’ lives by supporting meaningful participation in the knowledge production process and providing a safe space where participants are empowered by sharing stories that challenge, subvert and reimagine what it feels like to be an asylum seeker. Furthermore it suggests that in contrast to interview settings, through the process of ethno-mimesis participants were offered the time and space to consciously engage with their experiences and invest in their creativity and storytelling capacities in order to render their worldviews visible. Although the findings from this study reinforce an existing rich body of ethnographic work on lived experiences of asylum seekers, this study recognizes that the identified themes highlight the enduring impact of immigration policies on individuals asylum-seeking trajectories and focuses instead on how such experiences are creatively negotiated by participants.

The current study was carried out in 2016 and 2017 in eight cereal farms in Ouargla, in the north of Algerian Sahara. The damage caused by hybrid sparrows on cereals (barley and wheat) showed that the loss due to individuals of (Passer domesticus x P hispaniolensis)on cereal plots varies between the visited farms and fluctuates between 0.28% (0.22 qls / ha) and 15.6% (10.8 qls / ha). In general, the damage caused by the sparrows was found to be more important on the periphery of the plots than in the centersof these plots. A significant relationship was found between the rate of damage and the approach of cereal plots to tree blocks, and the density of ears per sampled square. A good decision on the position of cereal plots within farms seems tobe a priority to avoid sparrow attacks.

Van der Wiel, Renée.  The Swazi People.  Gallo Manor, South Africa: Awareness Publishing Group, 2012. Print.South Africa describes itself as “one rainbow nation going forward”, but within that rainbow there are eleven indigenous South African peoples.  The Swazi People is one of eleven volumes in the African Cultures of South Africa series, which presents the cultures for readers at the upper elementary level.  The other volumes include the cultures of The Khoikhoi, The Ndebele, The North Sotho, The San, The South Sotho, The Tsonga-Shangaan, The Tswana, The Venda, The Xhosa, and The Zulu.In The Swazi People, Renée Van der Wiel describes their arts and crafts, beliefs, clothes, history, houses, language, leaders, marriage, music and dance, recipes, and way of life.  The book incorporates many Swazi words, which are listed in the glossary at the back of the book.  For example, mahiya (cotton cloth), gogo (grandmother) and lobola (marriage gift, usually cattle) are all listed in the glossary. This volume is attractively produced and brightly coloured.  It opens with a full-page map of South Africa that shows the historical movements of the Swazi people and highlights their homelands.  Text and images are presented on alternate pages.  The professional quality images are usually full-page and are either historical black and white photos or modern colour photos of Swazi people engaged in traditional activities.  There is also an index, which improves the book's usefulness as an elementary research text. The text is written in age-appropriate language and deals with the subjects in sufficient detail that as an adult, I was able to learn from it.  In general, the tone is objective and non-judgemental.  For example, "[i]n 1973, King Sobhuzall and the Imbokoduo National Movement stopped all other political parties from taking part in elections in Swaziland. (…) After only five years of being a democracy, Swaziland became a country ruled by a king."  Where there is bias present, it is more in the form of presenting the Swazi point of view: "But the Boers did not care about looking after the Swazi people – all they wanted was to get through to the sea without having to travel through British territory.".This sturdily bound volume is an excellent work and is highly recommended for public and elementary school libraries.  Highly recommended:  4 stars out of 4Reviewer:  Sandy CampbellSandy is a Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Alberta, who has written hundreds of book reviews across many disciplines.  Sandy thinks that sharing books with children is one of the greatest gifts anyone can give.

Introduction: a notable phenomenon of modern historiography is the visual turn, which presupposes the study of history as the history of images. The subject of the research is the images published in the newspaper «Khanty-Mansi Shop (Shoy). Ostyako-Vogulskaya Pravda» in 1931–1939. Objective: presentation of the ethno-cultural segment of the visual range of the newspaper and on this basis the determination of its communicative capabilities in relations with the viewer-reader from among the indigenous peoples of the North. Research materials: newspaper images, works of theorists and practitioners of the photo department, party documents of the pre-war period. Results and novelty of the research: the classification of ethno-images is given; the connection between the dynamics of their publication and the socio-political trends in the country’s development has been clarified. As a common feature of ethno-images, their conventionality and simplicity are shown, which correlates with the peculiarities of the «northern style» in the visual arts of the Ob Ugrians. The weakness of the visual range is shown, which hindered the transformation of the newspaper into a mass, nationally oriented publication. The scientific novelty is determined both by the visual approach itself, and by the introduction into scientific circulation of a complex of images of the Ostyako-Vogul newspaper; observations and conclusions can be used in the preparation of the corresponding section of the academic history of Yugra, as well as special courses on the history of journalism.
