Vocational rehabilitation, consumer empowerment, and self-determination are key factors in the underlying philosophy of rehabilitation today, and a major emphasis in the provision of rehabilitation services. Consumers with learning disabilities face several specific obstacles in achieving desired rehabilitation goals. In order to provide rehabilitation counselors with a unique resource to help their clients assume control of their own rehabilitation plan, social learning theory and locus of control are examined. Specifically, two locus of control instruments are suggested for use with rehabilitation consumers who have learning disabilities. One instrument, the Academic Locus of Control Scale (ALOC; Trice, 1985) is appropriate for college-bound individuals, and the Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (ANS-IE; Nowicki & Duke, 1982) is appropriate for non-college bound individuals. The purpose of this article is to provide the rehabilitation counselor with a tool that can help connect the consumer's control of their rehabilitation plan to their perceptions of everyday events. This tool may help stimulate and maintain an internal locus of control by challenging inaccurate perceptions of control consumers may have toward commonly occurring events.

The youth are treated as a psychological age, during which the transition to independence, a period of self-determination, the acquisition of psychological, ideological and civic maturity occurs, outlook, moral consciousness and self-consciousness are formed. This article highlights features of the development of the locus of control at a young age. The concept of locus of control and its types is disclosed. Also described are the factors that influence the formation of the activity of behavioural activity and attitudes of subjects in adolescence, namely - its formation depends on both internal (subjective) and external (objective) factors. However, the perception of the world through one type of locus is crucial: internal (internal) or by the external (external) locus of control. The relevance of the study is due to the needs of both theoretical and practical needs. First of all, the need to follow how the locus of control directs the young man's actions in the direction necessary for his development. Central to the development of psychological tumours is the emergence of phenomena of consciousness during adolescence and adolescence, which dramatically changes the behaviour of the young man towards himself and the world, as he becomes able to make choices independently, based on personal principles and values and be responsible for the choice made. It is also conditioned by the importance of the process of self-determination of personality, which is the most important goal during the adolescence. In this regard, it is clear that the question of the locus of control, like the search for oneself, is receiving attention in psychology. Thus, the term locus of control allows us to trace the significant moments of manifestations of activity in the behavioural activity and relationships of subjects. What is the reason for the change in emotional and behavioural responses is due to the lack of people with a predominant external or internal locus of control.

Teaching self-determination skills to students with disabilities can improve both behavior and academic achievement while having a lasting impact on life outcomes. Specifically, goal setting is a highly useful and transferrable life skill that can enhance motivation, increase access to curriculum, and promote independence while improving academics and behavior. Unfortunately, students with disabilities are often not provided with adequate instruction to learn and practice goal-setting skills in school. To that end, this article presents a step-by-step guide for teachers to explicitly teach high school students with disabilities how to self-set goals to improve their behavior and academic achievement.

While evidence pertaining to an internal locus of control suggests the postulate of consistent attribution of responsibility to personal forces, that concerning the external orientation does not present a clear picture, and findings suggest the “external” orientation is more sensitive to environmental influences, especially under conditions of perceived threat. To investigate this further, two distinct groups of subjects, external and internal scorers, were selected on the basis of scores on Rotter's I-E scale by an initial sample of 350 Rhodes University undergraduates. The 163 selected subjects were randomly assigned to success and failure conditions on a problem-task. The prediction that the externally-oriented subjects would show a significantly greater tendency than the internal scorers to blame “bad luck” for their failure was supported as was the expectation of no difference between the two orientations under conditions without threat. It is suggested that Rotter's locus-of-control construct must be viewed as interactional rather than unidimensional.

The article presents the research on psychological factors of personal autonomy as a self-determination need and as a component of psychological well-being. The analysis was carried out in two directions: within in the theory of self-determination and within the theory of psychological well-being.

The greatest influence on autonomy development as a self-determination need have such predictors as goals in life, challenge, self-efficacy, self-acceptance, self-assurance, locus of control-life, locus of control-Self. Predictors that positively affect autonomy as a component of psychological well-being are: self-acceptance, acceptance of aggression, self-confidence, creativity, control, self-esteem.
The article determines that autonomy as a self-determination need is based not only on self-acceptance with all advantages and disadvantages, but also on existence of a goal in life and personal internal powers to achieve this goal. Autonomy, as it is understood in the theory of psychological well-being, is a necessary, but insufficient condition for self-determination. For formation and development of self-determination it is necessary to have a life purpose that gives meaningfulness to human life.
