With increased globalization of trade and business in a knowledge-based economy, and increasing diversification of the workforce, there is increasing pressure on multinational companies to report, and even measure, their social capital. This article explores the role of language in the creation of corporate social capital. The language used in a corporation is an asset, which creates value and corporate social capital in the use and exchange of ideas. Linguists have long attempted to assess the value of language as a commodity, but with little success. This article offers an approach to overcome this difficulty and to measure the value of language as an element of corporate social capital. To do so, it draws an analogy between the functions of language and functions of currency. The article goes on to suggest that multinational corporations should hold a portfolio of language skills, much as it does a portfolio of currencies.

In the article the authors consider the features of scientific and technological activities of transnational corporations, highlight the main trends and prospects for its development. In particular, it is emphasized that the source of modern development of society and human activity is innovation, and accordingly innovation becomes an important tool for all radical changes in human development and the economic system in general. Scientific and technological development of transnational corporations is a crucial prerequisite for ensuring their profitable activities. The purpose of the article is to analyze current trends and prospects for the development of scientific and technological activities of transnational corporations. The article examines the features of the R & D organization in multinational corporations. The dynamics of expenditures in individual leading TNCs on R&D is given. It is noted that the global nature of competition not only makes innovations more significant for TNCs, but also necessitates the search for new ways to innovate. The paper identifies the main types of technological policy, identifies the reasons for the centralization and decentralization of R & D, as well as possible risks that arise in the implementation of these policies. The experience of developed countries shows that competitiveness is ensured by a number of conditions, the main of which are the accumulated scientific and technological potential, institutional factors of technological progress and the presence of large knowledge-intensive corporations. Therefore, the current trend of scientific and technological activities of TNCs is a new wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The authors present the largest mergers and acquisitions at the beginning of the XXI century. In the last two decades, as a result of the growing internationalization of research, the trend of forming strategic alliances has sharply increased, especially due to the merger of companies in such high-tech industries as pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, semiconductors, etc. Special attention is paid to analysis of the reasons for the formation of strategic alliances. It is shown that in some cases competitors become partners in strategic alliances in high-tech industries. In conclusion, it is noted that in conditions of fierce competition in both international and domestic markets, the ability of companies to operate and develop depends on their ability to create and implement innovations. It is innovations that cause continuous economic change, contribute to the dynamic development and increase the efficiency of both the economic system as a whole and individual enterprise. The scientific and technological development of corporations is the main prerequisite for ensuring and increasing their international competitiveness.

The internationalization of Chinese research and development (R&D) is a fairly recent phenomenon and still ongoing process. What makes the rise of international Chinese R&D remarkable is that this is—alongside India—one of the first such endeavors by a developing country with already one of the most substantial global R&D footprints, even including Western countries. Similar motivations and challenges of earlier R&D globalization are replicated and observed also in the recent Chinese internationalization, with a few emerging country-specific nuances, such as the focus on technology acquisition through merger and acquisition (M&A) and suspected central coordination by the Chinese government, which has given rise to challenges of its own for Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs). In this respect, China seems to have been the victim of its own success; the future of Chinese R&D internationalization bears both opportunities and challenges for the global innovation community.

This article is an empirical investigation into the role of the CEO manager in the affiliates of multinational corporations operating in the Middle East. Grounded in a literature review of the reasons for employing either parent country nationals (PCNs) or host country nationals (HCNs) in top management position in foreign subsidiaries, a number of factors influencing the choice between these alternatives are identified. Using a data collected from 147 multinational companies (MNCs) operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the influence of each of these factors on this selection is empirically tested with the help of primary data. The study proposed that the relationship between the home and host country managers could be linked to agency theory (with the ‘classical’ principal–agent relationship) and to resource dependency theory (implying relations between the branch and other partners based on interdependence). Our results show that the agency and resource dependency mechanisms are indeed used side by side and complementary to each other to exercise control. Home country managers can strategize to implement control by the informal and social means by positioning a sizeable number of managers from the home country within the subsidiary. Indeed, our results revealed this as true.
