The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on humanity as well as research activities in life sciences and medicine. Between January and August 2020, the number of coronavirus-related scientific articles was roughly 50 times more than that of articles published in the entire year of 2019 in PubMed. It is necessary to better understand the dynamics of research on COVID-19, an emerging topic, and suggest ways to understand and improve the quality of research. We analyze the dynamics of coronavirus research before and after the outbreaks of SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 by examining all the published articles from the past 25 years in PubMed. We delineate research networks on coronaviruses as we identify experts’ background in terms of topics of previous research, affiliations, and international co-authorships. Two distinct dynamics of coronavirus research were found: 1) in the cases of regional pandemics, SARS and MERS, the scope of cross-disciplinary research remained between neighboring research areas; 2) in the case of the global pandemic, COVID-19, research activities have spread beyond neighboring disciplines with little transnational collaboration. Thus, COVID-19 has transformed the structure of research on coronaviruses as an emerging issue. Knowledge on COVID-19 is distributed across the widest range of disciplines, transforming research networks well beyond the field of medicine but within national boundaries. Given the unprecedented scale of COVID-19 and the nationalization of responses, the most likely way forward is to accumulate local knowledge with the awareness of transdisciplinary research dynamics.

Data Mining, Business Intelligence and other empirical approaches have great potential for various fields of research activities considering the improvements in data processing and retrieval. By using an empirical approach for the research methodology, the underlying data set should be available, at least for the review process in order to prevent fraud and ensure quality of research. However, data disclosure of the research data raises considerable privacy concerns due to the liability of the scholars to protect the privacy of their volunteers and adhere to the privacy policies of protected data. Therefore it is important to know about the strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches of anonymization, pseudonymization and attacks such as inference attacks. This chapter will provide an overview.

In assuring and enhancing the quality of Vietnamese higher education, especially the output and outcome quality to fulfill the needs and requirements of the labor market, the curricula and training, as well as research activities, have to be continuously improved in accordance with the fast and constant changes in the globalized era, and to lead the society in various training fields. In addition, due to the massification of higher education, quite a lot of graduates who do not work in the academic or research areas need to be well equipped with a variety of skills required by different careers and labor contexts which are not approached in the academic context during the training period, especially the practical skills and experience. The paper first (1) gives an overview of theoretical background on the link between the university and the industry/labor market as well as the principles of curriculum development, development of research projects and programs in compliance with the stakeholders’ requirements. Next, it aims to (2) present some common types and activities of connecting with various employers to enhance the quality of training for lecturers, managers, and students through some case studies of some typical educational programs assessed by AUN-QA among VNU-HCM. Finally, it (3) gives some recommendations for strengthening and developing stronger and more effective links with the employers to make full use of their contributions and enhance the quality of training, research in the Vietnamese higher education institutions in the integration era.

Today, the research activities of scientists and research organizations is estimated through the informetrical methods (bibliometrics) with absolute and relative indicators based on the number of publications and their citations in scientometric databases. The leading authors  and research organizations are given grants and awards, become international laureates, get financial support or other dividends. The authors argue that the method of research activities evaluation influences the authors’ behavior and increases plagiarism, rigged citation and academic dishonesty. The fraud practices misrepresent the estimations of research activities quality and the current status of a discipline and publication activities. The problem is analyzed; simultaneous use of bibliometric methods and most advanced scientific methods of modern methods of defining writing styles is suggested as a solution. The authors emphasize that traditionally libraries are meant to educate, to popularize knowledge and to inform. Today, they have to go into non-traditional functions, i.e. to support linguistic research and to build linguistic corpora. This would prevent manipulations when estimating publication activities with bibliometric methods and would promote academic honesty in academic practices.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam which has a function of faith, social and economic functions. Muslims who can pay zakat are required to give at least 2.5 per cent of their wealth. The problem of poverty prevalent in disadvantaged regions because of the difficulty of access to information and communication led to a gap that is so high in wealth and resources. The instrument of zakat provides a paradigm in the achievement of equitable wealth distribution and healthy circulation. Zakat potentially offers a better life and improves the quality of human being. There is a human quality improvement not only in economic terms but also in spiritual terms such as improving religiousity. This study aims to examine the role of zakat to alleviate humanitarian issues in disadvantaged regions such as Sijunjung, one of zakat beneficiaries and impoverished areas in Indonesia. The researcher attempted a Cibest method to capture the impact of zakat beneficiaries before and after becoming a member of Zakat Community Development (ZCD) Program in material and spiritual value. The overall analysis shows that zakat has a positive impact on disadvantaged regions development and enhance the quality of life of the community. There is an improvement in the average of mustahik household incomes after becoming a member of ZCD Program. Cibest model demonstrates that material, spiritual, and absolute poverty index decreased by 10, 5, and 6 per cent. Meanwhile, the welfare index is increased by 21 per cent. These findings have significant implications for developing the quality of life in disadvantaged regions in Sijunjung. Therefore, zakat is one of the instruments to change the status of disadvantaged areas to be equivalent to other areas.
