To study the influence of the blade entropy production range on the efficiency of a tubular turbine under coassociated conditions, the renormalization group K–ε turbulence model was used to simulate the full flow passage of the tubular turbine based on the Navier–Stokes equation, and the blade interface was analyzed using the eddy analysis method and entropy production theory. The results reveal that there is a strong correlation between the size of the high-entropy production area and the level of association. If the level of association is high, the size of the high-entropy production is small, and the turbine efficiency is high. Furthermore, if the level of association is low, the size of the high-entropy production area is large, and the turbine efficiency is low. Under small opening and small flow conditions, the blade entropy generation is due to the sharp change in the velocity gradient caused by the vortex on the blade. Under large opening and large flow conditions, the blade entropy production is mainly due to the friction loss caused by the impact of high-speed water flow.

An investigation into the effect of stator-rotor hub gap sealing flow on turbine performance is presented. Efficiency measurements and rotor exit area traverse data from a low speed research turbine are reported. Tests carried out over a range of sealing flow conditions show that the turbine efficiency decreases with increasing sealant flow rate but that this penalty is reduced by swirling the sealant flow. Results from time-accurate and steady-state simulations using a three-dimensional multi-block RANS solver are presented with particular emphasis paid to the mechanisms of loss production. The contributions toward entropy generation of the mixing of the sealant fluid with the mainstream flow and of the perturbed rotor secondary flows are assessed. The importance of unsteady stator wake/sealant flow interactions is also highlighted.

The entropy generation analysis of a thermal process is capable of determining the efficiency of that process and is therefore helpful to optimize the thermal system operating under various conditions. There are several ingredients upon which the phenomenon of entropy generation can depend, such as the nature of flow and the fluid, the assumed conditions, and the material properties of the working fluid. However, the dependence of entropy generation phenomenon upon such properties has so far not been fully realized, in view of the existing literature. On the other hand, based upon the existing studies, it has been established that the non-uniform concentration of nanoparticles in the base fluid does cause to enhance the heat transfer rate. Therefore, it is logical to investigate the entropy production under the impact of non-homogenous distribution of nanoparticles. Based upon this fact the aim of current study is to explore a comprehensive detail about the influence of non-homogeneous nanoparticles concentration on entropy production phenomenon by considering a laminar viscous flow past a moving continuous flat plate. Non-uniform concentration is considered in the nanofluid modeling in which the Brownian and thermophoretic diffusions are considered which impart significant effects on velocity and temperature profiles. An exact self-similar solution to this problem is observed to be possible and is reported. The effects of various controlling physical parameters such as Brinkman number, Schmidt number, Prandtl number, diffusion parameter, and concentration parameter on both local as well as total entropy generation number and Bejan number are elaborated by several graphs and Tables. The obtained results reveal a significant impact of all aforementioned parameters on entropy generation characteristics. It is observed that by a 20% increase in nanoparticles concentration the total entropy generation is increased up to 67% for a set of fixed values of remaining parameters.

In order to explore the transient characteristics of the large-scale vertical siphon axial flow pumping station during the start-up and exhaust process, numerical simulations were carried out on the start-up process of the axial flow pumping station under the two starting modes of pre-opening the vacuum breaking valve and keeping the vacuum breaking valve closed. The calculation results show that during the start-up phase of the unit, the flow separation phenomenon of the impeller channel of the pump device with the vacuum breaking valve closed is serious, the large-scale vortex in the guide vane blocks the flow channel, and the instantaneous impact on the blade surface is strong. The flow field of the pump device with pre-open vacuum failure valve is obviously less affected by the instantaneous impact characteristics during the start-up of the pump. The range of high entropy production area in the impeller channel is reduced, the duration of high entropy production area is significantly shortened, and the instantaneous impact on the blade surface is weak. Under the two starting modes, the internal flow field of the pump device is similar in the evolutionary law. The unstable flow phenomenon of the pump device is most prominent in the weir flow stage. The maximum instantaneous impact on the blade surface also mainly occurs in the weir flow stage. A very small part of the remaining gas in the siphon formation stage is difficult to discharge and takes a long time. After the pump device is exhausted and enters a stable operation state, the external characteristic parameters are in good agreement with the test results. Compared with the starting method in which the vacuum breaking valve is kept closed, the method of pre-opening the vacuum breaking valve reduces the maximum starting head by 20% and the exhaust time by 43%. The pre-open vacuum breaking valve effectively avoids the system instability caused by the start-up and exhaust of the pump device.

The heat transfer enhancement and fluid flow control in engineering systems can be achieved by addition of ferric oxide nanoparticles of small concentration under magnetic impact. To increase the technical system life cycle, the entropy generation minimization technique can be employed. The present research deals with numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamic thermal convection and entropy production in a ferrofluid chamber under the impact of an internal vertical hot sheet. The formulated governing equations have been worked out by the in-house program based on the finite volume technique. Influence of the Hartmann number, Lorentz force tilted angle, nanoadditives concentration, dimensionless temperature difference, and non-uniform heating parameter on circulation structures, temperature patterns, and entropy production has been scrutinized. It has been revealed that a transition from the isothermal plate to the non-uniformly warmed sheet illustrates a rise of the average entropy generation rate, while the average Nusselt number can be decreased weakly. A diminution of the mean entropy production strength can be achieved by an optimal selection of the Lorentz force tilted angle.

Abstract In an effort to understand the dynamic hub forces on road vehicles, an advanced free-rolling tire-model is being developed in which the tread blocks and tire belt are modeled separately. This paper presents the interim results for the tread block modeling. The finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to predict the contact forces on the tread blocks based on a linear viscoelastic material model. Special attention is paid to investigating the forces on the tread blocks during the impact and release motions. A pressure and slip-rate-dependent frictional law is applied in the analysis. A simplified numerical model is also proposed where the tread blocks are discretized into linear viscoelastic spring elements. The results from both models are validated via experiments in a high-speed rolling test rig and found to be in good agreement.

Railway noise is calculated to predict the impact of new or reconstructed railway tracks on nearby residential areas. The results are used to prepare adequate counter- measures, and the calculation results are directly related to the cost of the action plans. The calculated values were used to produce noise maps for each area of inter- est. The Schall 03 2012 is one of the most frequently used methods for the production of noise maps. The latest version was released in 2012 and uses various input para- meters associated with the latest rail vehicles and track systems in Germany. This version has not been sufficiently used in South Korea, and there is a lack of standard guidelines and a precise manual for Korean railway systems. Thus, it is not clear what input parameters will match specific local cases. This study investigates the modeling procedure for Korean railway systems and the differences between calcu- lated railway sound levels and measured values obtained using the Schall 03 2012 model. Depending on the location of sound receivers, the difference between the cal- culated and measured values was within approximately 4 dB for various train types. In the case of high-speed trains, the value was approximately 7 dB. A noise-reducing measure was also modeled. The noise reduction effect of a low-height noise barrier system was predicted and evaluated for operating railway sites within the frame- work of a national research project in Korea. The comparison of calculated and measured values showed differences within 2.5 dB.

This paper measures the spatial evolution of urban agglomerations to understand be er the impact of high-speed rail (HSR) construction, based on panel data from fi ve major urban agglomerations in China for the period 2004–2015. It is found that there are signi ficant regional diff erences of HSR impacts. The construction of HSR has promoted population and economic diff usion in two advanced urban agglomerations, namely the Yang e River Delta and Pearl River Delta, while promoting population and economic concentration in two relatively less advanced urban agglomerations, e.g. the middle reaches of the Yang e River and Chengdu–Chongqing. In terms of city size, HSR promotes the economic proliferation of large cities and the economic concentration of small and medium-sized cities along its routes. HSR networking has provided a new impetus for restructuring urban spatial systems. Every region should optimize the industrial division with strategic functions of urban agglomeration according to local conditions and accelerate the construction of inter-city intra-regional transport network to maximize the eff ects of high-speed rail across a large regional territory.

Rotating systems components such as rotors, have dynamic characteristics that are of great importance to understand because they may cause failure of turbomachinery. Therefore, it is required to study a dynamic model to predict some vibration characteristics, in this case, the natural frequencies and mode shapes (both of free vibration) of a centrifugal compressor shaft. The peculiarity of the dynamic model proposed is that using frequency and displacements values obtained experimentally, it is possible to calculate the mass and stiffness distribution of the shaft, and then use these values to estimate the theoretical modal parameters. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shaft were obtained with experimental modal analysis by using the impact test. The results predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental test. The model is also flexible with other geometries and has a great time and computing performance, which can be evaluated with respect to other commercial software in the future.
