Highlights Battery energy storage may improve energy efficiency and reliability of hybrid energy systems composed by diesel and solar photovoltaic power generators serving isolated communities. In projects aiming update of power plants serving electrically isolated communities with redundant diesel generation, battery energy storage can improve overall economic performance of power supply system by reducing fuel usage, decreasing capital costs by replacing redundant diesel generation units, and increasing generator system life by shortening yearly runtime. Fast-acting battery energy storage systems with grid-forming inverters might have potential for improving drastically the reliability indices of isolated communities currently supplied by diesel generation. Abstract This paper will highlight unique challenges and opportunities with regard to energy storage utilization in remote, self-sustaining communities. The energy management of such areas has unique concerns. Diesel generation is often the go-to power source in these scenarios, but these systems are not devoid of issues. Without dedicated maintenance crews as in large, interconnected network areas, minor interruptions can be frequent and invasive not only for those who lose power, but also for those in the community that must then correct any faults. Although the immediate financial benefits are perhaps not readily apparent, energy storage could be used to address concerns related to reliability, automation, fuel supply concerns, generator degradation, solar utilization, and, yes, fuel costs to name a few. These ideas are shown through a case study of the Levelock Village of Alaska. Currently, the community is faced with high diesel prices and a difficult supply chain, which makes temporary loss of power very common and reductions in fuel consumption very impactful. This study will investigate the benefits that an energy storage system could bring to the overall system life, fuel costs, and reliability of the power supply. The variable efficiency of the generators, impact of startup/shutdown process, and low-load operation concerns are considered. The technological benefits of the combined system will be explored for various scenarios of future diesel prices and technology maintenance/replacement costs as well as for the avoidance of power interruptions that are so common in the community currently. Graphic abstract Discussion In several cases, energy storage can provide a means to promote energy equity by improving remote communities’ power supply reliability to levels closer to what the average urban consumer experiences at a reduced cost compared to transmission buildout. Furthermore, energy equity represents a hard-to-quantify benefit achieved by the integration of energy storage to isolated power systems of under-served communities, which suggests that the financial aspects of such projects should be questioned as the main performance criterion. To improve battery energy storage system valuation for diesel-based power systems, integration analysis must be holistic and go beyond fuel savings to capture every value stream possible.

A key science priority for planetary exploration is to search for signs of life in our Solar System. Life-detection mission concepts aim to assess whether or not biomolecular signatures of life are present, which requires highly sensitive instrumentation. This introduces greater risk of false positives, and perhaps false negatives. Stringent science-derived contamination requirements for achieving science measurements on life-detection missions necessitate mitigation approaches that minimize, protect from, and prevent science-relevant contamination of critical surfaces of the science payload and provide high confidence to life-detection determinations. To this end, we report on technology advances that focus on understanding contamination transfer from pre-launch processing to end of mission using high-fidelity physics in the form of computational fluid dynamics and sorption physics for monolayer adsorption/desorption, and on developing a new full-spacecraft bio-molecular barrier design that restricts contamination of the spacecraft and instruments by the launch vehicle hardware. The bio-molecular barrier isolates the spacecraft from biological, molecular, and particulate contamination from the external environment. Models were used to evaluate contamination transport for a designs reference mission that utilizes the barrier. Results of the modeling verify the efficacy of the barrier and an in-cruise decontamination activity. Overall mission contamination tracking from launch to science operations demonstrated exceptionally low probability on contamination impacting science measurements, meeting the stringent contamination requirements of femtomolar levels of compounds. These advances will enable planetary missions that aim to detect and identify signatures of life in our Solar System.

Beaufort scale of wind force monitoring is the basic content of meteorological monitoring, which is an important means to ensure the safety of production and life by timely warning of natural disasters. As there is a limited battery life for sensors, determining how to reduce power consumption and extend system life is still an urgent problem. In this work, a near-zero power triboelectric wake-up system for autonomous Beaufort scale of wind force monitoring is proposed, in which a rotary TENG is used to convert wind energy into a stored electric energy capacitor. When the capacitor voltage accumulates to the threshold voltage of a transistor, it turns on as an electronic switch and the system wakes up. In active mode, the Beaufort scale of wind force can be judged according to the electric energy and the signal is sent out wirelessly. In standby mode, when there is no wind, the power consumption of the system is only 14 nW. When the wind scale reaches or exceeds light air, the system can switch to active mode within one second and accurately judge the Beaufort scale of wind force within 10 s. This work provided a triboelectric sensor-based wake-up system with ultralow static power consumption, which has great prospects for unattended environmental monitoring, hurricane warning, and big data acquisition.

Background: Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with a high heritability. Dysfunction of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-type glutamate receptors may be involved in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. In this study, we examined the contribution of GRIN2A and GRIN2B (Glutamate Ionotropic Receptor NMDA Type Subunit 2A/2B) polymorphisms to the clinical features of schizophrenia, such as the leading symptoms, the type of course, and the age of onset. Methods: A population of 402 Russian patients with schizophrenia from the Siberian region was investigated. Genotyping of seventeen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GRIN2A and GRIN2B was performed using QuantStudio™ 3D Digital PCR System Life Technologies amplifier using TaqMan Validated SNP Genotyping Assay kits (Applied Biosystems). The results were analyzed using Chi-square and the Fisher’s exact tests. Results: We found an association of GRIN2A rs7206256 and rs11644461 and GRIN2B rs7313149 with the early onset (before the age of 18 years old) schizophrenia. We did not reveal any associations of GRIN2A and GRIN2B polymorphisms with leading (positive vs. negative) symptoms or type of course (continuous vs. episodic) of schizophrenia. Conclusions: In the study, we confirmed the involvement of the GRIN2A and GRIN2B genes in the early onset of schizophrenia in a Russian population of the Siberian region.

Persistent and ever-changing threat of terrorism has led to the evolution of security systems in the air transportation industry. Passenger and checked-baggage screening prior to boarding an aircraft has become a priority for the airport security system. We propose a two-stage screening system by integrating the passenger prescreening and a multi-level checked-baggage screening. Based on the concept of the weighted k-out-of-n system, we introduce an integrated weighted alarm security screening system for a multi-level baggage screening system, where the system alarms when the total weight of its working levels is greater than a predefined system alarm threshold. To improve the security and efficiency of aviation systems, two optimization models are formulated to enhance the detection of possible threats in the passenger and baggage screening with consideration of the system life cycle cost. The optimal solutions of the threshold values are obtained for screening technologies and passenger classes to achieve the maximum security and efficiency. Numerical analysis is implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed two-stage screening system.
