Background: The alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) describes a new type I allergy entity to the carbohydrate epitope galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), which is mainly found in mammalian food products (e.g., beef, pork, and venison). Apart from meat products, alpha-gal can also be found in products containing gelatin of bovine or porcine origin. Recent case reports pointed to severe anaphylaxis in patients suffering from AGS after vaccination with vaccines containing hydrolyzed gelatin. It was the objective of this study to evaluate if basophil activation tests (BATs) performed with such vaccines were positive in patients with AGS. Methods: BAT was performed with different dilutions of a gelatin-containing measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) live vaccine; an attenuated varicella (V) vaccine; an attenuated V-zoster (VZ) vaccine; a MMR live vaccine not containing gelatin (non-gelatin MMR vaccine) in 2 patients with confirmed AGS, 2 patients highly suspicious for AGS, and 2 healthy individuals without any previous medical history for allergies. Results: All patients showed strongly positive results for all gelatin-containing vaccines (MMR vaccine, V vaccine, and VZ vaccine). Non-gelatin MMR vaccine was negative. The 2 healthy controls did not show any basophil activation. Conclusions: Gelatin-containing vaccines should be administered with caution or avoided in patients with AGS because of their high potential to activate basophils indicating a risk for anaphylaxis. Also, BAT is a useful additional tool when it comes to screening for potentially high-risk alpha-gal-containing drugs.

In 2014, the Varnes classification system for landslides was updated. Complex landslides can still be a problem to classify as the classification does not include the flow type in the hydrodynamical sense. Three examples of Icelandic landslides are presented and later used as case studies in order to demonstrate the methods suggested to analyze the flow. The methods are based on the different physical properties of the flow types of the slides. Three different flow types are presented, named type (i), (ii), and (iii). Types (i) and (ii) do not include turbulent flows and their flow paths are sometimes independent of the velocity. Type (iii) include high velocity flows; they are treated with the translator wave theory, where a new type of a slope factor is used. It allows the slide to stop when the slope has flattened out to the value that corresponds to the stable slope property of the flowing material. The type studies are for a fast slide of this type, also a large slip circle slide that turns into a fast-flowing slide farther down the path and finally a large slide running so fast that it can run for a kilometer on flat land where it stops with a steep front.

Brevibacterium linens is one of the main bacteria found in the smear of surface-ripened cheeses. The genome of the industrial strain SMQ-1335 was sequenced using PacBio. It has 4,209,935 bp, a 62.6% G+C content, 3,848 open reading frames, and 61 structural RNAs. A new type I restriction-modification system was identified.

In this paper, we propose a new class of continuous distributions with two extra shape parameters called the a new type I half logistic-G family of distributions. Some of important properties including ordinary moments, quantiles, moment generating function, mean deviation, moment of residual life, moment of reversed residual life, order statistics and extreme value are obtained. To estimate the model parameters, the maximum likelihood method is also applied by means of Monte Carlo simulation study. A new location-scale regression model based on the new type I half logistic-Weibull distribution is then introduced. Applications of the proposed family is demonstrated in many fields such as survival analysis and univariate data fitting. Empirical results show that the proposed models provide better fits than other well-known classes of distributions in many application fields.

Several decades of improving dairy cattle towards unilateral utilization of dairy cattle led to enormous progress in the field of milk yield; however, it resulted in a number of unfavorable features, such as reproductive disorders, increased calf mortality, and reduced health. Most cases of embryo loss and/or lost pregnancies occur during the first four to five weeks of gestation; accurate detection for pregnancy during this period is likely to contribute to an improvement in gestation rates. A specific protein, interferon-tau (IFNT), stimulates interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), and their expression increases during gestation within 21 days after insemination. In bovines, the early conceptus undergoes a phase of rapid growth and elongation before implantation, the latter occurring 2–3 weeks after fertilization. IFNT acts mainly in the endometrium of the luminal epithelium. It is a new type I interferon that regulates several genes encoding uterine-derived factors. They are crucial in the processes of preparing the uterus for placenta attachment, modifying the uterine immune system, and regulating early fetal development. Because IFNT is expressed and induces ISGs in the endometrium during pregnancy recognition, it was reasoned that surrogate markers for pregnancy or IFNT might be present in the blood and provide an indicator of pregnancy status in cattle.

The categorization of geometrical illusions of extent as Type I or Type II phenomena based on variation in magnitude with age is critically examined. Methodological shortcomings and the failure of contemporary findings to show matching age trends for components of a single illusion are presented as factors undermining the usefulness of this perceptual dichotomy. Finally, it is shown that a new Type I/Type II dichotomy based on changes in perceived size rather than amount of illusion indicates a developmental commonality among most of the illusions of extent.

Objective Type I endoleaks are one of the most frequent and life-threatening complications of thoracic endovascular aortic repair. This study aimed to assess the use of suture-anchoring devices for repairing type I endoleaks. Methods The descending aortic aneurysm model (saccular type) was made by side-to-end anastomosis to a Dacron graft. A Matsui-Kitamura stent graft was deployed to create a proximal type I endoleak. Approximately 5 mm above the upper rim of the anastomosis, the aorta was punctured by the pistol of the suture-anchoring device with a T-shaped bar under fluoroscopy. Sutures were applied until angiography showed the absence of a type I endoleak. During the process, two pressure measurements were used to perform continuous assessments of aortic pressure and intra-aneurysm sac pressure. Results A mean ± SD of 5 ± 1 anchoring shots were used to eliminate type I endoleaks. The device performed well, and no complications were observed. The mean ± SD intrasac pressures before stent graft deployment, during endoleak maintenance, and after repair were 118 ± 5, 61 ± 4, and 26 ± 5 mm Hg, respectively. The postrepair pressure was significantly decreased ( P < 0.001; Student t test). Conclusions Despite some anatomic and clinical limitations identified during the experiments, the effectiveness of the suture-anchoring device was confirmed. Further improvement of the device will soon lead to its use as a less invasive endoleak repair procedure.
