Introduction: Working in the clinical field can be a demanding experience. While reports indicate escalating burnout rates among physicians, further investigation about what physicians can do to prevent burnout is necessary. Our objective was to assess self-care levels among pediatricians and the correlation with job satisfaction in order to subsequently identify protective factors.Methods: In this nationwide, cross-sectional study, a web-based survey was distributed to all Austrian pediatricians via a mailing list of the Austrian Society of Pediatrics. Self-care was measured with a modified Professional Self-Care Scale (PSCS), which consisted of nine items on a four-point Likert scale (from 1, “totally disagree,” to 4, “totally agree”). Additional items addressed job satisfaction, peer support, and access to professional coaching.Results: The survey was distributed to 1,450 mailing list contacts, a total of 309 Austrian pediatricians completed the survey (21%). “Family” (M = 3.3) and “Friends” (M = 3.1) were the most highly rated self-care strategies. We found significant differences between pediatricians under 35 years and those aged 50 years and above (z = −4.21, p < 0.001). Peer support appeared to impact job satisfaction substantially. We found differences between pediatricians who frequently talk to colleagues about difficult situations, those who sometimes do so, and those who never do (p < 0.001), with a linear trend indicating increased job satisfaction with more frequent peer support (p < 0.001).Conclusions: Among all self-care strategies, a stable network of family and friends was highest rated, followed by balanced nutrition. Younger, male pediatricians working in hospital showed to be a vulnerable group with regard to overall self-care. Moreover, higher self-care values were found among those pediatricians who reported to receive peer support on a regular basis. We suggest combined organizational and individual interventions to promote pediatricians' well-being. Organizations should provide the possibility to select a well-balanced diet as well as space and time to consume food and cultivate a work environment that enables communication among peers and facilitates professional coaching. On the personal level, we want to encourage pediatricians to talk to trusted colleagues in challenging clinical situations and to consider working with a professional coach.

Job satisfaction (JS) correlates positively with patients’ satisfaction and outcomes and employees’ well-being. In Botswana, the level of job satisfaction and its determinants among nurse anesthetists were not investigated. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2020 to June 2020 encompassing all nurse anesthetists in clinical practice in Botswana. A self-administered questionnaire was used that incorporated demographic data, reasons to stay on or leave their job, and a validated 20-item short form of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire which was pretested on five of our nurse anesthetists. Percentage is used to describe the data. The independence of categorical variables was examined using chi-square or Fisher’s exact test. p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. In Botswana, a total of 76 nurse anesthetists were in clinical practice during the study period. Sixty-six (86.9%) responded to the survey. Gender distribution was even, 50.0%. The overall JS was 36.4%. Males had significantly higher JS than females, p = 0.001 . Significantly higher job satisfaction was found in married nurse anesthetists ( p = 0.039 ), expatriate nurse anesthetists ( p = 0.001 ), nurse anesthetists in non-referral hospitals ( p = 0.023 ), and nurse anesthetists with ≥10 years’ experience ( p = 0.019 ). Nurse anesthetists were satisfied with security, social service, authority, ability utilization, and responsibility in ≥60.0% of the cases. They were not satisfied in compensation, working condition, and advancement in a similar percentage. The main reason to stay on their job was to serve the public in 68.2%. In Botswana, employers should make an effort to address the working conditions, compensation, and advancement of nurse anesthetists in clinical practice.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise a population at risk for HIV infection. Quality of Life (QOL) becomes the main goal to lengthen their life span. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between peer support and family acceptance toward QOL of MSM living with HIV and ARV in Medan. A total of 175 respondents were involved in this cross-sectional study that was carried out via purposeful sampling. Data were collected by means of the Perceived Acceptance Scale, Peer Group Caring Interaction Scale, and WHOQOL-HIV BREF. Results showed that QOL was significantly associated with peer support (p= 0.023; OR= 2.070) and family acceptance (p= 0.001; OR= 2.766). Thus, peer support and family acceptance are important variables affecting well-being and QOL of MSM living with HIV and ARV. This finding can be used for the improvement of QOL in PLWH. AbstrakDukungan Sebaya dan Penerimaan Keluarga terhadap Kualitas Hidup LSL dengan HIV dan Antiretroviral. Laki-laki yang berhubungan seks dengan laki-laki (LSL) merupakan populasi yang berisiko terinfeksi HIV. Kualitas hidup (QOL) menjadi tujuan utama untuk memperpanjang umur mereka. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan dukungan sebaya dan penerimaan keluarga terhadap kualitas hidup LSL yang hidup dengan HIV dan antiretroviral (ARV) di Medan. Sebanyak 175 responden dilibatkan dalam studi cross-sectional yang dilakukan melalui purposive sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan Skala Perceived Acceptance, Skala Interaksi Peduli Peer Group, dan WHOQOL-HIV BREF. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas hidup secara signifikan berhubungan dengan dukungan teman sebaya (p = 0,023; OR = 2,070) dan penerimaan keluarga (p = 0,001; OR = 2,766). Dengan demikian, dukungan sebaya dan penerimaan keluarga merupakan variabel penting yang mempengaruhi kesejahteraan dan kualitas hidup LSL yang hidup dengan HIV dan ARV. Temuan ini dapat digunakan untuk peningkatan QOL pada ODHA.Kata Kunci: dukungan sebaya, HIV, kualitas hidup, penerimaan keluarga

Addressing the worldwide challenge of shortage of nurses contributes to the national and international efforts to enhance the health and well-being of the global population. The main aim of this research is to investigate the level and the relationship between psychological distress, burnout, job satisfaction and intention to quit among primary healthcare nurses in public and private practices while accounting for their socio-demographic characteristics. This was a cross sectional study of 173 primary health care nurses. The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory and General Health Questionairre-12 were used to assess burnout and psychological distress among nursing staff. High psychological distress was present in 21.38% of all respondents and was significantly related to intention to quit. The results indicated a mean job satisfaction score of 3.54 with higher job satisfaction among private vs. public sector nurses. Furthermore, nurses with higher burnout levels and lower job satisfaction were more likely to consider leaving the profession compared with those with lower burnout and higher job satisfaction. The study provides valuable insight for managers of general healthcare practice and healthcare policy makers in effectively managing and retaining primary healthcare nurses.

Background: Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought several impacts on the health of people. The infodemic which accompanied the pandemic can lead to cyberchondria, fear and anxiety accompanying excessive online search of COVID-19 related information. Most of the people try to avoid getting infected with this virus by taking adequate protective measures. Hence the aim of this study was to analyze the impact of COVID-19 related cyberchondria on self-medication and self care. Materials and Methods: An online cross-sectional semi-structured questionnaire based study was done and a total of 323 responses were obtained. Participants were segregated into two clusters based on the cyberchondria severity score which included four constructs using k-means cluster analysis considering the score obtained in each construct. The impact of cyberchondria on self care and self care among medical practitioners between the clusters was analyzed using independent t-test. Qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: This study found that 35% of the participants were categorized in the cluster with high cyberchondria score. A marked proportion of the participants who have taken self-medication for COVID-19 prophylaxis belonged to this cluster. A statistically significant difference was observed in the mean of the scores used to assess self care between the clusters (p = 0.003) whereas no significant difference was observed among registered medical practitioners (p=0.222). Conclusion: Anxiety related with excessive online COVID-19 information seeking behaviour had effects in terms of enhanced self care and self-medication in the respondents. Hence it is important to use internet wisely for self well being.

While overt forms of sexism in organisations are on the decline, covert ones are becoming the norm. This article argues that illegitimate tasks are a disguised form of gender-based discrimination and harassment. To support this argument, evidence is provided about the effects of sexism on occupational well-being that are caused by undertaking illegitimate tasks. The authors focus on the relationship between sexist organisational climate and illegitimate tasks and the resulting effects on job satisfaction and irritation. The empirical data used in the analyses were obtained from a cross-sectional study of a sample of German psychologists. After controlling for the effects of gender, the results provided evidence of the negative effects that a sexist organisational climate has on irritation and job satisfaction, mediated by illegitimate tasks.

ObjectivesChinese neurosurgery has made great progress during the past decades; yet, little is known about the working status of neurosurgeons. This study aimed to evaluate the difference between academic and non-academic neurosurgeons, focusing on their professional burnout, job satisfaction and work engagement.DesignCross-sectional nationwide survey.Study settingThe survey was conducted in China between 2017 and 2018.ParticipantsA total number of 823 academic neurosurgeons and 379 non-academic neurosurgeons participated in this study.Outcome measuresProfessional burnout, job satisfaction and work engagement were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Job Descriptive Index and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, respectively.ResultsThe majority of respondents were male (92.93%), less than 45 years old (85.27%) and married (79.53%). Chinese neurosurgeons worked 63.91±11.04 hours per week, and approximately 45% experienced burnout. Compared with non-academic respondents, academic neurosurgeons had longer working hours (p<0.01), higher income (p<0.01) and were less willing to get married (p<0.01). In addition, they showed a lower degree of burnout (p<0.01), a higher level of job satisfaction (p<0.01) and were more enthusiastic at work (p=0.015). Multivariate regression analyses indicated that divorced (OR 7.02, 95% CI 2.37 to 15.08) and workplace violence (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.18 to 2.24) were associated with burnout for both academic and non-academic respondents. Long working hours (≥71 hours per week) and low annual income (<1 00 000 RMB) were risk factors for burnout among academic neurosurgeons. For non-academic neurosurgical surgeons (age 36–45 years), working as attending doctors, serving in public hospitals and having the first house-living child were all closely related to the incidence of burnout.ConclusionChinese neurosurgeons are under significant stress particularly for the non-academic neurosurgeons. Offering better opportunities for training, promotion, higher income and safer working environments could be solutions to relieve burnout and improve career satisfaction and engagement.Trial registration numberChiCTR1800014762. The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model is an integrative theoretical framework for monitoring workplaces with the aim to increase job engagement and prevent burnout. This framework is of great interest since the management of job resources and demands can negatively affect employees, especially in organisational contexts characterised by high job demands. This study uses the job demands-resources model to investigate the relationships between organisational climate, role stress, and employee well-being (burnout and job satisfaction) in public organisations. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The research participants are 442 public employees. A structural equation model was developed (organisational climate, job satisfaction, burnout, role stress). These confirm that organisational climate is correlated with role stress (−0.594), job satisfaction (0.746), and burnout (−0.408), while role stress is correlated with burnout (0.953) and job satisfaction (−0.685). Finally, there is a correlation between burnout and job satisfaction that is negative and significant (−0.664). The study confirms that a positive organisational climate could lead to less stressed and burned-out workers and, at the same time, to more satisfied employees with improved well-being.

AbstractBackground: Numerous of studies have been done to healthcare professionals about job satisfaction and workplace boredom, but very few to ambulance staff. The mental health and emotional well-being of ambulance staff appears to be affected by the emergency character of the work they provide.Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the degree of job satisfaction and workplace boredom to the ambulance staff of Crete.Material & Methods: It was a cross-sectional study. The ambulance personnel of Crete included in the study. The job satisfaction scale (23 items) and the Boredom Proneness Scale (28 items) were used for data collection. The statistical analysis was performed by the SPSS. V.22.0.Results: The studied sample consisted of 142 ambulance personnel. Most of them were male (81%), married (72.9%), and had attended secondary school (63.4%). The job satisfaction was 71.1±5.7 and was found to be negatively related to how often someone felt upset (r=-0.192, p=0.02), how often they felt frustrated (r=-0.196, p=0.019) and the frequency that one feels bored (r=-0.515, p<0.001). The score of the Boredom Propensity Scale was 113.4±18.4. Women had statistically significantly greater score in Boredom Propensity Scale than men (118.9±22.6 vs. 112.1±17.1, p=0.037). The overall workplace boredom syndrome was found to be positively related to the frequency the participants are engaged in risky behaviors (r=0.426, p<0.001), how often someone felt upset (r=0.393, p<0.001), how often they felt frustrated (r=0.333, p<0.0001) and the frequency that one feels bored (r=0.212, p=0.011).Conclusions: Job satisfaction of the sample is at a medium level, while the professional boredom at a fairly high level. The professional boredom is higher in women.
