Field pea is used for human consumption or as livestock feed. The yield of pea seeds can be significantly decreased due to the genetically determined tendency of peas to pod shattering. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pod sealant application on the quantitative and qualitative traits of the seed yield of two pea cultivars: Arwena and Tarchalska grown in south-western Poland in the years 2018–2019. Pod sealant application showed higher values of analysed quantitative and qualitative traits: number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, seed weight per pod, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, dry matter of seeds, protein content in seeds, and total protein productivity, except the number of seeds per pod. For both years (2018–2019), the interaction of cultivar and pod sealant application showed a significant effect on the number of seeds per plant, total protein content, total protein productivity, and seed weight per pod in 2019. Therefore, the pod sealant application can be a relatively simple way to improve the yielding of field peas.

An experiment for diversity analysis with 66 genotypes of lablab bean (Lablab purpureus L.) was conducted at Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) during 2009-2010. Data were collected from all experimental plants on the following characters: days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to first pod setting, no. of pods per plant, wt. of 20 pods (g), pod yield per plant (g), pod length (cm), number of seeds per pod, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight (g), and seed yield per plant (g). As per multivariate analysis, the genotypes were grouped into seven clusters. The highest number of genotypes 15 was included in cluster V followed by cluster II, which contained 13 genotypes. Cluster III, I, VI, IV contained 12, 11, 6, and 5 genotypes, respectively. The cluster VII which included 4 genotypes was the smallest among the 7 clusters. It is important to note that the highest amount of genetic divergence within the cluster group was noticed in the cluster VII having only 4 genotypes. The inter-cluster distances (D2) were higher than the intra-cluster distances. The inter-cluster D2 values varied from 2059.094 to 19302.6. The distances between the cluster VII and V; VII and VI; VII and II and VII and I were comparatively high than the other inter-cluster distances. The genotypes of these clusters were thus more diversified for yield and yield contributing characters. The intracluster distance (8502.795) observed in cluster VII revealed maximum diversity among themselves. While the least variation (625.372) was noticed between genotypes of the cluster II signifying the closeness of the genotypes included in this cluster. Data on the contribution of individual characters towards divergence suggested that no. of pods per plant contributed maximum (34.033%) to the genetic divergence followed by pod yield per plant and 100-seed weight. The genotypes of the cluster VII produced highest pods per plant and those of the cluster II produced lowest pod yield per plant. Seed yield per plant was found to be highest in cluster VII and lowest in cluster II. Results of the study suggested that selection for these traits in climbing genotypes might be effective. By strategically using this diversity, the breeder can develop high yielding varieties of lablab bean. Bangladesh J. Agril. The variation of protein content and correlations between protein content and agronomic traits were studied on materials in variety trials over five years and at two locations in southern Finland. Protein content and protein yield of a given genotype varied widely in different years. High temperature during the growing season was the main climate factor influencing protein content. Statistically significant variation in protein content was found between different genotypes. Correlations between protein content and seed yield were weak, negatively significant in only two years. The relationship between seed weight and protein content was negative in all years. Late maturity was positively associated with protein content in all years and at both locations. It is suggested that breeding for protein productivity in northern conditions it is more effective to improve seed yield and yield stability than to attempt improving protein content.

Thirteen common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) accessions collected from different ecological regions of Jammu and Kashmir were evaluated at four diverse locations during kharief 2009. Significant variation was observed for most of the morphological traits. Estimates of heritability (bs) were high (>60 %) for all the traits except pod length. The expected genetic gain (per cent of mean) was high (>30 %) for days to maturity, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, 100-seed weight and seed yield plant-1 while it was moderate (10.0-30.0%) for days to 50 per cent flowering, number of branches plant-1, pod length and protein content. Seed yield plant-1 was observed to have a highly positive and significant correlation both at phenotypic and genotypic levels with number of pods plant-1, pod length, number of seeds pod-1 and 100-seed weight. But negative and significant correlations with days to 50 per cent flowering and days to maturity were estimated from pooled analysis. Classification of accessions led to the formation of two clusters wherein the maximum number 7 accessions were grouped in cluster I and the remaining six were grouped in cluster II. Analysis of traits contributing maximum to the divergence revealed that traits viz., 100-seed weight (37.10%), protein content (15.26%), number of seeds pod-1 (11.28%) and days to maturity (10.14%) to contribute to the divergence in the present experimental material.

Sesame is one of the most important oilseed crops in the world. Irrigation is of great importance to sesame production due to its positive effect on growth parameters. Although sesame has good drought tolerance compared with many other crops, it is particularly susceptible to drought damage during the seedling, flowering and seed filling stages and this can lead to yield loss. The aim of this study was to determine the response of sesame landraces to different irrigation applications during the 2015 growing season. The experiment was set up as a split plot design with three replicates, four main plots (irrigation treatments, designated as 100%, 75% 50% and 0 of the daily crop evapotranspiration) and two sub-plots (sesame landraces, Limnos and Evros). Different characteristics such as plant height, number of seeds per capsule, and number of capsules per plant, seed yield, 1000-seed weight and % capsules without seeds, were recorded. The results indicated that all traits except 1000-seed weight were significantly affected by irrigation regimes. Plant height, shattering losses and number of capsules per plant decreased with increasing water shortage. Seed yield and number of seeds per capsule were less affected by irrigation level and showed higher values in the 50% of the daily crop evapotranspiration treatment. Limnos produced higher seed yield and number of seeds per capsule under all irrigation regimes. Evros showed higher plant height and shattering losses than Limnos. The results of this study suggest that sesame landraces can use water efficiently, are locally adapted and associated with traditional farming systems.

In order to best exploit the available genetic wealth in the crop, the information would have paramount important. Therefore, this study was conceived to examine the variability and determines the relative importance of primary and secondary traits as selection criteria to improve productivity. Field pea (Pisum sativum L. var. arvense) is amongst the most important legume crop of India. The experimental material comprised of 120 field pea germplasm including 40 indigenous and 10 exotic collections of pea and 4 check varieties viz., HUDP-15, HFP-4, HUP-2, Rachna. Five competitive plants from each plot were randomly selected for recording observations for all the quantitative characters except days to 50 per cent flowering and days to maturity, which were recorded on line basis. In present study a strong and positive association of seed yield per plant observed with harvest index, biological yield per plant, plant height, number of seeds per pod, number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per plant and 100-seed weight. Days to maturity and number of seeds per pod showed positive correlation with days to 50 per cent flowering and number of primary branches per plant respectively. Days to maturity and 100-seed weight and number of pods per plant showed weak association with seed yield per plant in positive direction. Thus, these characters emerged as most vital component traits and associated positively with seed yield per plant.

The results of the study carried out during 2009-2010 with lablab bean (Lablab purpureus) are presented in this paper. Data were recorded from all experimental plants on the following characters as number of pods/plant, pod yield/plant (g), number of seeds/pod, number of seeds/plant; seed yield/plant (g), Range, mean, genetic parameter, correlation co-efficient and path coefficient were studied. High heritability coupled with high expected genetic advance in percentage of mean were observed for most of the characters. The coefficients of correlation showed that seed yield/plant was positively and significantly correlated with days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to first pod setting, number of pods/plant, pod yield/plant and seeds/pod, number of seeds/plant, and seed yield. Path coefficient analysis showed that days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, number of pods/plant, 20 pod weight (g), pod yield/plant, pod length, number of seeds/pod, number of seeds/plant, 100-seed weight influenced seed yield/plant directly in positive direction. Among the characters, number of seeds/plant had high positive correlation with seed yield/plant. Days to first pod setting exhibited negative direct effects on seed yield. From this result, it can be concluded that days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, number of pods/plant, pod yield/plant, number of seeds/pod, number of seeds/plant, 100-seed weight are the most important yield contributing characters as they influenced pod yield and seed yield directly in positive direction. The study of the effect of three well known mutagens, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), methyl methane sulphonate (MMS) and gamma rays (GR) on the yield contributing traits of the urdbean variety TPU-4 were carried out in the M3 generation. Effect of selected mutagenic treatments/doses of EMS (0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 M), MMS (0.0025, 0.05 and 0.01 M) and (GR) (30, 40 and 50 KR) on different yield contributing traits like plant height, plant spread, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod, seed yield per plant and 100 seed weight were analyzed in the M3 populations of the variety TPU-4. Seeds of M2 plants and control were harvested separately and sown to raise M3 population.. Genetic variabilty in the mutagen administered M3 progeny of the urdbean variety TPU-4 was analyzed by employing statistical methods. Data on mean values and shift in the mean of seven quantitative traits was evaluated on individual plant basis. The experimental findings revealed that concentrations / dose of the all these mutagens showed inhibitory effect on plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length and number of seeds per pod. Lower concentrations of mutagens exerted a promotory effect on plant spread, 100 seed weight and seed yield per plant while higher concentrations of these mutagens inhibited them to different extent.

Field pea seeds from 10 cultivars grown at two locations in Manitoba in 1986 and 1987 were analyzed for proximate and mineral profiles. Cultivars differed significantly in their level of total protein, crude fat, ADF, and all minerals tested. However, differences were not extremely large and were comparable to European reports. Location-year also had a significant effect on the levels of total protein, ADF, and all minerals tested. In most cases, the warmest location-year produced relatively higher levels of minerals, ash, and total protein, and lower seed yield than the coolest location-year. The morpho â€physiological traits associated with seed yield in chickpea (Cicerarietinum L.) were evaluated on thirty five chickpea genotypes under twodifferent water regimes. In optimum condition, the highest correlation wasbelonged to number of seeds/plant and number of pods/plant (0.944**) andin water deficit condition, the strongest correlation of seed yield was observedwith number of seeds/plant (0.875**), number of pods/plant(0.789**) and 100  â€seed weight (0.438**). Physiological traits (RWC, Chlorophylland Carotenoid) indicated low and positive correlation with yield, buthigh positive correlation with other seeds yields related traits in optimumcondition while, under water deficit condition, chlorophyll content and RWChad low and non â€significant negative correlation with seeds yield. Carotenoid,number of seeds/plant and 100 â€seed weight showed more direct positiveeffect on yield in optimum environment and in stress condition, numberof seeds/ plant and 100 â€seed weight showed highest direct effect on seedyield. Results of factor analysis showed that four factors explained 88.54%and 34.5% of the total variance caused in the characters in optimum andwater deficit environment, respectively. In general, the results suggestedthat a chickpea cultivar, for increased yield under non â€stress conditions,should have maximum number of seeds and pods per plant and under stressconditions should have maximum number of seeds and pods per plant andalso keep the high level of RWC and chlorophyll content in their leaves. Thus,identifying these traits as selection criteria in chickpea breeding programmay be useful for breeders to introduce suitable drought resistant chickpeacultivars for arid regions.

To determine the association between genetic parameters and morphological traits in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes, a field experiment was conducted with 49 different landrace, breeding lines and cultivated chickpea genotypes using a 7?7 lattice square design with 2 replications in the 2012-2013 growing season. Genetic parameters including genetic, environmental and phenotypic variances; coefficients of variation; heritability; correlation coefficients; factor analysis and path coefficients were estimated, and cluster analysis was performed. High heritability values observed in measured traits indicating that these traits are controlled mainly by additive genes and that selection of such traits may be effective for improving seed yield. Number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and plant biomass had a positive direct effect on seed yield. These traits also had positive and highly significant phenotypic correlations with seed yield. Using principal component (PC) analysis, the first three PCs with eigenvalues more than 1 contributed 70.94% of the variability among accessions. The germplasm were grouped into 3 clusters. Each cluster had some specific characteristics of its own and the cluster I was clearly separated from cluster II and III. Overall the results, it can be concluded that seed yield in chickpea can be improved by selecting an ideotype having greater number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight and plant biomass.
