Intensive slaughtering with electrical stunning (ES) is replacing traditional manual slaughtering of geese in China. This study aimed to assess stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation in geese stunned by high-frequency current intensities. Forty male Yangzhou geese, 92 days old, were randomly allocated into five treatments with eight replicates per treatment. The geese in the control group were not stunned, while the other birds were stunned by alternating current (AC) in a water bath. Each bird received a current intensity of 20 mA (E20mA), 40 mA (E40mA), 70 mA (E70mA), or 100 mA (E100mA) for 10 s at 500 Hz. The gene expression of c-jun N-terminal kinase 1 tended to decrease in the E40mA birds (p = 0.08). Stunning with 40 mA resulted in the maximum serum uric acid and urea among the ES groups and decreased serum adrenocorticotropin and creatine kinase (p < 0.01) compared with 70 mA and 100 mA. Increasing the current intensity reduced the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl free radical elimination ability and total-superoxide dismutase linearly in goose breast meat at d 2 and in thigh meat at d 0 (all p < 0.01). Stunning geese with 40 mA at 500 Hz for 10 s could alleviate stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation.

We evaluated the effect of broiler age and aging process on the meat characteristics of breast fillets from female free-range broilers slaughtered at 12 weeks of age (Wk12) and 70 weeks of age (Wk70). We used breast meat from female ISA Label (n = 60) broilers. Ten samples of each broiler age were aged in an incubator (2°C ± 0.5°C) for 3 and 7 days. Ten samples for each broiler age were analysed 4 h post-slaughter (Control group). Compared with breast meat from Wk12, breast meat from Wk70 showed higher shear force (30.52 N vs 27.19; P = 0.0322) and total collagen (4.33 g/kg vs 3.77 g/kg; P = 0.0149), which were reduced during aging to 15.49 N and 3.92 mg/100 g, respectively. The aging process did not affect the lipid oxidation of breast meat from Wk70. After aging for 3 days, breast meat from Wk70 had similar protein and fat contents to those of meat from Wk12 (21.29% and 1.04%, on average, respectively). Breast meat from Wk70 also showed lower concentrations of docosahexaenoic (0.32% vs 0.65%; P < 0.0001) and eicosapentaenoic (0.01% vs 0.12%; P < 0.0001) fatty acids than meat from Wk12. The use of free-range hen meat is beneficial to the industry because of the lower storage and cooking losses, which may influence the final yield, besides its lower polyunsaturated fatty acid concentration, which makes it less vulnerable to rancidification. Aging for at least 3 days at 2°C is satisfactory to promote the tenderisation of meat from free-range broiler hens.

Abstract There is a problem of damage of bearings of traction induction motors of electric trains Lastochka by electric current. Based on the fact that the bearings have a ceramic insulation coating, and the cases of its electrical breakdown is not fixed, the authors put forward a version that a high-frequency current flows through the bearing as through an electric capacitance. The analysis show that the cause of the current can be a radio standard GSM-R. The proposed technical solution against the damage of bearings: the use of grounding shaft rings, replace the bearings on the other with ceramic rolling elements, arrangement of separate high-frequency grounding for the GSM-R antenna.

This study investigated the effect of purple glutinous rice bran (PRB) supplementation on performance, oxidative status and lipid oxidation in broiler. Two hundred male day old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 5 groups of 40 birds each. Each treatment, fed the basal corn-soybean diets containing 0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of purple glutinous rice bran (PRB). Diets were formulated separately for starter and finisher phases (day 0 to 21 and day 22 to 42). Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) in PRB supplemented groups were higher than rice bran group and depend on the supplement dose of PRB. PRB supplementation (6%, 9% and 12%) increased (P less than 0.05) weight gain (WG), average daily gain (ADG) and decreased (p less than 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to control group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in serum from the PRB groups were lower than control group (P less than 0.05). Glutathione (GSH) levels in serum of PRB groups (6%, 9% and 12% PRB) were higher than control group (P less than 0.05). However, there were no difference between 3% PRB and control groups. No difference of lipid oxidation in breast meat after storage between PRB supplemented groups with control group (P>0.05). This study indicated that PRB supplementation in diet had positive effects on performance and oxidative status of broiler chickens but had no effect on lipid oxidation in breast meat storage

This study was conducted to examine the effect of two humic substances (HS) supplemented in broilers’ diet on the breast meat quality of broiler chickens. In this experiment, 120 pieces of one-day-old COBB500 broiler chickens were used. Broilers were divided into three groups, each containing 40 birds with three replications (13, 13, and 14 per one pen). Fattening lasted 38 days. The first experimental diet was supplemented with 0.7% of HS (HS0.7) and the second was enriched with 0.7% of acidified HS (HSA0.7). The control group of broilers (C) was fed a basal diet without the addition of any supplements. HS0.7 samples had the highest total protein content and the lowest content of fat (p < 0.01). The effects of broiler diet and storage had a significant impact on the pH of breast samples, p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively. Supplementation of HS in broiler diet positively affected the lipid oxidation of breast meat samples, as indicated by the lower malondialdehyde content (p < 0.05). HSA0.7 samples had significantly better juiciness after the storage period (p < 0.001). The quality of meat produced with supplementation of HS in broilers’ feed can be considered as valuable in human nutrition due to improved protein and fat content with decreased lipid oxidation.

Background: Fear is one of the most widely studied emotions and is closely associated with the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Previous studies have proven that acupuncture directly impacts the ANS, influences the heart rate (HR) and the heart rate variability (HRV) and exerts other effects. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of Jianshi (PC5) and Neiguan (PC6) electro-acupuncture on HRV during fear-invoking auditory stimulation using an Actiheart ECG recorder. Materials and Methods: Two hundred healthy subjects were recruited. Using a random number table, subjects were grouped for exposure to fear-invoking auditory stimulation (n=40) or neutral auditory stimulation (n=40). After determining that our fear-invoking auditory stimulation produced the fear emotion, the other 120 subjects were similarly divided into an electro-acupuncture (EA group) and a control group that received PC5 and PC6 electro-acupuncture or no intervention. Results: The fear score of the fear-invoking auditory group was significantly higher than that of the neutral auditory group. The EA group showed higher SD, RMSSD, and high frequency (HF) components of HRV than those of the control group. Conclusion: The primary result suggests that PC5 and PC6 electro-acupuncture affects cardiac autonomic neural regulation, mainly via the parasympathetic system, in subjects exposed to fear-invoking auditory stimulation.

Engine controller data have been interrogated for indications of incipient surge for three turbofan engines; a large Pratt and Whitney, a large General Electric, and a small Williams International. Versions of these engines are currently operating in the field and all have compression ratios of 18 or greater. The Pratt and Whitney engine was surged only at full power while the other two were surged at partial power and at full power. The interest in this work was in detecting the presence of warning signatures for a current inventory of engines. A constraint was imposed on the experiments to use only existing engine instrumentation. The frequency response of the controller and the engine instrumentation limited the high frequency detection capability to about 100 Hz for the large engines and about 200 Hz for the small engine, For the large engines, it was not possible to detect a surge warning but for the small engine a sufficient warning of incipient surge was detected.

A bidirectional dc-dc converter with multiple outputs are concatenated with a high frequency current source parallel resonant push pull inverter is presented in this paper. The two outputs are added together and it is taken as the input source for the inverter. The current source parallel resonant push pull inverter implemented here with high frequency applications like induction heating, Fluorescent lighting, Digital signal processing sonar. This paper proposes a simple photovoltaic power system consists of a bidirectional converter and a current fed inverter for regulating the load variations. Solar power is used as the input source for the system. Simulation of the proposed system is carried out in PSIM software and experimentally verified the results.

Recently current effects on clean and metal adsorbate surfaces have attracted much attention not only because of interesting phenomena but also because of practically importance in treatingclean and metal adsorbate surfaces [1-6]. In the former case, metals deposited migrate on the deposit depending on the current direction and a patch of the deposit expands on the clean surface [1]. The migration is closely related to the adsorbate structures and substrate structures including their anisotropy [2,7]. In the latter case, configurations of surface atomic steps depends on the current direction. In the case of Si(001) surface equally spaced array of monatom high steps along the [110] direction produces the 2x1 and 1x2 terraces. However, a relative terrace width of the two domain depends on the current direction; a step-up current widen terraces on which dimers are parallel to the current, while a step-down current widen the other terraces [3]. On (111) surface, a step-down current produces step bunching at temperatures between 1250-1350°C, while a step-up current produces step bunching at temperatures between 1050-1250°C [5].In the present paper, our REM observations on a current induced step bunching, started independently, are described.Our results are summarized as follows.(1) Above around 1000°C a step-up current induces step bunching. The phenomenon reverses around 1200 C; a step-down current induces step bunching. The observations agree with the previous reports [5].
