Crustaceans are generally considered more sensitive to ocean warming due to their lack of certain efficient regulators. However, the alterations in the physiology and behavior of crustaceans in response to thermal stress differ vastly even among the infraspecific populations of heterogeneous landscapes. Consequently, understanding the impact of temperature fluctuation on crustacean infraspecific populations might be essential for maintaining a sustainable persistence of populations at existing locations. In the present study, we chose the Japanese mantis shrimp (Oratosquilla oratoria) as the representative crustacean population, and conducted transcriptome analyses in two divergent O. oratoria populations (the Zhoushan and Qingdao populations) under same thermal stress (20–28 °C) to identify the population-specific expression response to thermal stress. The results showed significant differences in gene expressions, GO terms and metabolic pathways between the two populations. We hypothesized that intraspecific mutations in the same or different genes might lead to thermal adaptive divergences. Temperature increases from 20–28 °C produced significant enrichment in GO terms and altered the metabolic pathways in the Zhoushan population despite the lack of differentially expressed unigenes. Therefore, several functional genes with large pleiotropic effects may underlie the response to thermal stress in the Zhoushan population. Furthermore, the most significantly enriched biological processes of the Qingdao population were associated with the state or activity of cells and its significant enriched pathways with genetic information processing as well as immune and environmental information processing. In contrast, the differentially regulated unigenes of the Zhoushan population were primarily involved in the regulatory cellular and transcription processes and the most significant pathways found were metabolic and digestive. Consequently, the regulatory mechanisms of the Zhoushan population are probably more efficient than those of the Qingdao population under the same thermal stress.

Ripening of tomato fruit leads, in general, to a sequential decrease in the endogenous levels of polyamines spermidine (SPD) and spermine (SPM), while the trend for the diamine putrescine (PUT) levels is generally an initial decrease, followed by a substantial increase, and thereafter reaching high levels at the red ripe fruit stage. However, genetic engineering fruit-specific expression of heterologous yeast S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) decarboxylase in tomato has been found to result in a high accumulation of SPD and SPM at the cost of PUT. This system enabled a genetic approach to determine the impact of increased endogenous levels of biogenic amines SPD and SPM in tomato (579HO transgenic line) and on the biogenesis, transcription, processing, and stability of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes in tomato fruit as compared with the non-transgenic 556AZ line. One major biogenetic process regulating transcription and processing of pre-mRNA complexes in the nucleus involves small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs). To determine the effect of high levels of SPD and SPM on these latter processes, we cloned, sequenced, and identified a box C/D snoRNA cluster in tomato, namely, SlSnoR12, SlU24a, Slz44a, and Slz132b. Similar to this snoRNA cluster housed on chromosome (Chr.) 6, two other noncoding C/D box genes, SlsnoR12.2 and SlU24b, with a 94% identity to those on Chr. 6 were found located on Chr. 3. We also found that other snoRNAs divisible into snoRNA subclusters A and B, separated by a uridine rich spacer, were decorated with other C/D box snoRNAs, namely, J10.3, Z131a/b, J10.1, and Z44a, followed by z132a, J11.3, z132b, U24, Z20, U24a, and J11. Several of these, for example, SlZ44a, Slz132b, and SlU24a share conserved sequences similar to those in Arabidopsis and rice. RNAseq analysis of high SPD/SPM transgenic tomatoes (579HO line) showed significant enrichment of RNA polymerases, ribosomal, and translational protein genes at the breaker+8 ripening stage as compared with the 556AZ control. Thus, these results indicate that SPD/SPM regulates snoRNA and rRNA expression directly or indirectly, in turn, affecting protein synthesis, metabolism, and other cellular activities in a positive manner.

AbstractA representative semi-enclosed bay of China, Bohai Bay has experienced severe interference in recent decades and is under threat from rapid human development. Although the mantis shrimp Oratosquilla oratoria plays an important role in the ecosystem and fishery, its feeding ecology and the impact of habitat changes on its feeding habits are poorly known. In this study, we sought to identify the prey consumed by O. oratoria through the separation of stomach contents and to describe its trophic ecology during maturation, from March to July, in the Tianjin coastal zone of Bohai Bay. A total of 594 specimens were collected and 347 (58.59%) stomachs were found to have food remains. More than half of the O. oratoria individuals had poor feeding activity, and the degree of feeding activity of females was higher than that of males, but there was no significant difference in the visual fullness index and the fullness weight index (FWI) between sexes for each month. And the feeding activities of O. oratoria were consistent over the study months. A total of 207 prey items yielded 231 readable sequences and 24 different taxa were identified. Prey detected in O. oratoria consisted mainly of crustaceans, which accounted for 71.86 % of the clones detected; 16.02% corresponded to fishes, 8.23% corresponded to mollusks and the remaining 3.90% corresponded to other marine organisms. Cannibalism (occured frequently, 69.08%) in this study was noticeably higher than that seen in previous studies and confirmed that cannibalism may be a significant feeding strategy in the mantis shrimp O. oratoria in the Tianjin coastal zone of Bohai Bay. The ecological environment in Bohai Bay has been affected by anthropogenic activities and the macrofaunal biodiversity and abundance have noticeably declined, which might make the food scarce for the mantis shrimp O. oratoria. Then, the starvation obviously increased cannibalistic tendencies.

Digital technologies are no longer the future but are the present of civil proceedings. That is why any research in this direction seems to be relevant. At the same time, some of the fundamental problems remain unattended by the scientific community. One of these problems is the problem of classification of digital technologies in civil proceedings. On the basis of instrumental and genetic approaches to the understanding of digital technologies, it is concluded that their most significant feature is the ability to mediate the interaction of participants in legal proceedings with information; their differentiating feature is the function performed by a particular technology in the interaction with information. On this basis, it is proposed to distinguish the following groups of digital technologies in civil proceedings: a) technologies of recording, storing and displaying (reproducing) information, b) technologies of transferring information, c) technologies of processing information. A brief description is given to each of the groups. Presented classification could serve as a basis for a more systematic discussion of the impact of digital technologies on the essence of civil proceedings. Particularly, it is pointed out that issues of recording, storing, reproducing and transferring information are traditionally more «technological» for civil process, while issues of information processing are more conceptual.

Previous research found evidence for a liking bias in moral character judgments because judgments of liked people are higher than those of disliked or neutral ones. This article sought conditions moderating this effect. In Study 1 ( N = 792), the impact of the liking bias on moral character judgments was strongly attenuated when participants were educated that attitudes bias moral judgments. In Study 2 ( N = 376), the influence of liking on moral character attributions was eliminated when participants were accountable for the justification of their moral judgments. Overall, these results suggest that although liking biases moral character attributions, this bias might be reduced or eliminated when deeper information processing is required to generate judgments of others’ moral character.

Abstract Motivated by the recent availability of extensive electronic news databases and advent of new empirical methods, there has been renewed interest in investigating the impact of financial news on market outcomes for individual stocks. We develop the information processing hypothesis of return volatility to investigate the relation between firm-specific news and volatility. We propose a novel dynamic econometric specification and test it using time series regressions employing a machine learning model selection procedure. Our empirical results are based on a comprehensive dataset comprised of more than 3 million news items for a sample of 28 large U.S. companies. Our proposed econometric specification for firm-specific return volatility is a simple mixture model with two components: public information and private processing of public information. The public information processing component is defined by the contemporaneous relation with public information and volatility, while the private processing of public information component is specified as a general autoregressive process corresponding to the sequential price discovery mechanism of investors as additional information, previously not publicly available, is generated and incorporated into prices. Our results show that changes in return volatility are related to public information arrival and that including indicators of public information arrival explains on average 26% (9–65%) of changes in firm-specific return volatility.

Background:Inborn metabolic disorders (IMDs) currently encompass more than 1,500 diseases with new ones still to be identified1. Each of them is characterised by a genetic defect affecting a metabolic pathway. Only few of them have curative treatments, that target the respective metabolic pathway. Commonly, treatment examples include diet, substrate reduction therapies, enzyme replacement therapies, gene therapy and biologicals, enabling IMD-patient now to survive to adulthood. About 30 % of all IMDs involve the musculoskeletal system and are here referred to as rare metabolic RMDs. Generally, IMDs are very heterogenous with respect to symptoms and severity, often being systemic and affecting more children than adults. Thus, challenges include certified advanced training of adult metabolic experts, standardised transition plans, social support and development of therapies for diseases that do not have any cure yet.Objectives:Introduction of MetabERN, its structure and objectives, highlighting on the unique features and challenges of metabolic RMDs and describing the involvement of patient representation in MetabERN.Methods:MetabERN is stratified in 7 subnetworks (SNW) according to the respective metabolic pathways and 9 work packages (WP), including administration, dissemination, guidelines, virtual counselling framework, research/clinical trials, continuity of care, education and patient involvement. The patient board involves a steering committee and single point of contacts for each subnetwork and work package, respectively2. Projects include identifying the need of implementing social science to assess the psycho-socio-economic burden of IMDs, webinars on IMDs and their transition as well as surveys on the impact of COVID-193 on IMD-patients and health care providers (HCPs), social assistance for IMD-patients and analysing the transition landscape within Europe.Results:The MetabERN structure enables bundling of expertise, capacity building and knowledge transfer for faster diagnosis and better health care. Rare metabolic RMDs are present in all SNWs that require unique treatments according to their metabolic pathways. Implementation of social science to assess the psycho-socio-economic burden of IMDs is still underused. Involvement of patient representatives is essential for a holistic healthcare not only focusing on clinical care, but also on the quality of life for IMD-patients. Surveys identified unmet needs of patient care, patients having little information on national support systems and structural deficits of healthcare systems to ensure HCP can provide adequate clinical care during transition phases. These results are collected by MetabERN and forwarded to the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Commission (EC) to be addressed further.Conclusion:MetabERN offers an infrastructure of virtual healthcare for patients with IMDs. Thus, in collaboration with ERN ReCONNET, MetabERN can assist in identifying rare metabolic disorders of RMDs to shorten the odyssey of diagnosis and advise on their respective therapies. Thermal stress is present in metal–organic frameworks undergoing temperature changes during adsorption and desorption. We computed the thermal pressure coefficient as a proxy for this phenomenon and discuss the impact of thermal expansion mismatch.
