The potential of saffron flowers as a source of polyphenols, and in particular anthocyanins, for the extraction of bioactive compounds and the production of a cyanic colorant was analyzed. A microwave pretreatment, prior to the conventional solid–liquid extraction process, was proposed as a feasible intensification step. The effectiveness of microwave pretreatment was assessed in terms of increased yield and improved quality of the final product. The operational variables studied were the pretreatment temperature (60–120 °C) and the solid–liquid ratio (0.30–0.50 g/mL). It was found that the addition of the microwave pretreatment to the conventional process allowed one to reduce extraction time by up to 12 times and to greatly improve the characteristics of the final product, using microwave energy densities as low as 0.16–0.54 kJ/mL. The extract quality was evaluated in terms of polyphenol richness (25% increase), product composition (80% of the anthocyanins was delphinidin), antioxidant capacity (boosted by the pretreatment) and color (variations in red and blue hue depending on conditions). To conclude, a microwave pretreatment in which the material is heated to a temperature of 65 °C with a solvent ratio of 0.30 g/mL was selected as the optimum to maximize process efficiency and product quality.

Turmeric has a bioactive compound namely curcuminoid. It has many pharmacology effects such as anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifertility, anti-venom, anti-coagulant, anti-HIV hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and anticoagulant properties. To increase the economic value of turmeric, it is necessary to develop a hydrothermal extraction process of turmeric’s active compound. The advantages of hydrothermal extraction were inexpensive, abundant availability, high purity, non-toxic, and easy to handle. This research aims to study the effect of operating conditions : temperature (130-150oC), time (10-40 minutes) and solid:liquid ratio (1:10 and 1:12) on the bioactive compounds of turmeric extracted from hydrothermal extraction process. Generally, high extraction yield was obtained at higher extraction temperature (140 and 150oC). Under these conditions, with a lower solid : liquid ratio (1:10), high concentration of curcumin is produced. Further, a higher solid : liquid ratio will likely produce the opposite result, except when it operates at low extraction temperature. The high temperature of the pressurized liquid water can reduce the viscosity and surface tension of water so it will increase the diffusion rates and absorption. The higher the solid:liquid ratio, the greater the different concentration between interior and exterior cell, which promote the high efficiency of diffusion process.

Silica is mainly used in the production of rubber, glass, cement, glass, ceramics, paper, cosmetics, electronics, paintings, healthcare and other industries. Kalirejo village has a potential abundant resource of silica minerals. However, to refine it, high cost of extraction should be done to obtain high purity of silica. Different refining methods influence different purity of the silica. The purpose of this research was to study the refining process of mineral rock silica from Kalirejo village, Kokap, Kulonprogo by emplying simple and cheap solid-liquid extraction. Extraction was done by varying the particle size at 100 - 200 mesh, while NaOH concentration was varied in 0.5 N to 5 N.  Results showed that minerals taken from Kalirejo village was dominated by silica (23%).  The largest extract (4.89 gram) was obtained at 200 mesh and using NaOH 5 N with yield of 15.07%. Higher NaOH and higher particle size enhanced the extraction yield. This finding could help small communities in Kalirejo village to enhance the quality of silica by employing simple and cheap extraction process.

To optimize the extraction process of total flavonoids from RADIX RHIZOMA GLYCYRRHIZAE and Study on the Antioxidant Activity. Total flavonoids were extracted from RADIX RHIZOMA GLYCYRRHIZAE with ethanol by ultrasonic-assisted method, whose extraction process was optimized by orthogonal test design. The scavenging effect of pumpkin polysaccharide on OH and O2-were studied by salicylic acid and pyrogallic acid method. The optimum extraction process was as follows: ethanol concentration of 75%, solid-liquid ratio of 1:25,ultrasonic power of 350 W and ultrasonic duration of 25 min.Under the above conditions, the extraction rate of total flavonoids reached as high as 1.943%. The influencing order of each factor on extraction rate of polysaccharides was determined to be: ethanol concentration>solid-liquid ratio>ultrasonic power>ultrasonic duration. When the solution concentration is 1.1296mg/ml, the scavenging rate of crude flavonoids on superoxide radical is 50%.Suggesting that it would be an effctive natural free radical scavenger. The study could provide a scientific basis for the further exploitation and utilization of RADIX RHIZOMA GLYCYRRHIZAE

The work is devoted to the study of adsorption of F- ions on red mud, which is a waste of Vietnam's alumina plant. The red mud was previously activated with a solution of H2SO4 (2M) with a solid / liquid ratio of 1: 2. Investigation of adsorption at pH = 6.8; room temperature and adsorption time of 120 minutes showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of F- ions reached 9.4 mg / g. The kinetic regularities of the process are described by a second-order equation, the isotherm of the adsorption of F- ions is characterized by the equations of Langmuir and Freundlich. The test of the activated red mud  on real samples of wastewater containing fluoride ions showed that the quality of the water after treatment satisfies the permissible standard of Vietnam for industrial wastewater.
