This article deals with the laser cutting of wood and wood composites. The laser cutting of wood and wood composites is widely accepted and used by the wood industry (due to its many advantages compared to, e.g., saw cutting). The goal of this research was to optimize the cutting parameters of spruce wood (Pices abies L.) by a low-power CO2 laser. The influence of three factors was investigated, namely, the effect of the laser power (100 and 150 W), cutting speed (3, 6, and 9 mm·s−1), and number of annual rings (3–11) on the width of the cutting kerf on the top board, on the width of the cutting kerf on the bottom board, on the ratio of the cutting kerf width on the top and bottom of the board, on the width of the heat-affected area on both sides of the cutting kerf (this applies to the top and bottom of the board), and on the degree of charring. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation and regression analysis were used for developing a linear regression model without interactions and a quadratic regression model with quadratic interactions. Based on the developed models, the optimization of parameter settings of the investigated process was performed in order to achieve the final kerf quality. The improvement in the quality of the part ranged from 3% to more than 30%. The results were compared with other research dealing with the laser cutting of wood and wood composites.

An experimental analysis is presented which investigates the relationship between cutting parameters and the volume of material removal as well as its cutting quality on a Nd:YAG laser cutting system. The parameters that varied on two testing thickness during cutting include cutting speed, incident laser power and focal position in a continuous through cut. Various trends of the kerf geometrical features in terms of the varying process parameters are analyzed and shown to be reasonable. Discussions are also given on kerf geometry control in situations with cutting parameters. It shows that the effects of varying parameters such as cutting speed, laser power and focal position on cutting kerf width, surface roughness, and striation that have provided a deeper understanding of the laser machining.

This paper investigates high power CO2 laser cutting of 5mm-thick Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets, aiming to evaluate the effects of various laser cutting parameters on surface roughness. Using multiple linear regression, a mathematical model based on experimental data was proposed to predict the maximum height of the surface Sz as a function of two laser cutting parameters, namely cutting speed and assist-gas pressure. The adequacy of the proposed model was validated by Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA). Experimental data were compared with the model’s data to verify the capacity of the proposed model. The results indicated that for fixed laser power, cutting speed is the predominant cutting parameter that affects the maximum height of surface roughness.

The main objective of the research covered in this paper is to present results for the quality of surfaces thermally cut with a laser beam. The variety of steel materials used as samples on which laser cutting is performed are the following Č.0146 (1.0330), Č.0147 (1.0333), Č.2131 (1.5024), SS Ferbec CR, HARDOX 450 and HARDOX 550. Thermal cutting is carried out with a CNC controlled Fiber laser BAYKAL type BLS–F–1530. The quality of the cut surface is analyzed based on varying the power of the laser beam, changing cutting speed and the type of additional gas (oxygen, air and nitrogen). By visual inspection, measuring the roughness of the cut surface and measuring the width of the intersection, it is determined the influence of the factors like type of the base material, type of gases, the power of thelaser beam and the cutting speed, in accordance with the standards DIN EN ISO 9013-2002 and the JUS C.T3.022.

Laser cutting is the popular unconventional manufacturing method widely used to cut various engineering materials. In this work CO2 laser cutting of AISI 314 satinless steel has been investigated. This paper focus on the investigation into the effect of laser cutting parameters like laser power, assist gas pressure, cutting speed and stand-off distance on surface roughness, hardness and kerf dimensions like kerf width, kerf ratio and kerf taper in CO2 laser cutting of AISI 314 stainless steel.

ABSTRACT The application of the low-power CO2 laser-cutting process to fluoroelastomer (FKM), polyamide 6 (PA6), PA6/FKM thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), and their thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) is reported. The main laser process parameters studied were laser power, cutting speed, and material thickness. The value of the top and bottom widths of the slit that were formed during laser cutting (kerf width), melted transverse area, and melted volume per unit time were measured and analyzed. Interestingly, TPE showed a smaller melted area and melted volume per unit time when compared with those values with PA6. Dynamic vulcanization further decreased these values. For example, the melted areas of PA6 and TPE were 510 × 10−3 mm2 and 305 × 10−3 mm2, respectively, which reduced to 238 × 10−3 mm2 for TPV at 40 W laser power. FKM showed the lowest value (melted area of 180 × 10−3 mm2). In addition, the output quality of the cut surface was examined by measuring the root mean square (RMS) roughness of the cut edges and heat-affected zone (HAZ). The obtained results indicated that the dimension of the HAZ and RMS roughness largely decreased in TPE when compared with PA6. For example, the HAZ of PA6 was 700 μm, which decreased to 230 μm for TPE at 40 W laser power. On the other hand, HAZ was nonexistent for FKM. Infrared spectroscopic analysis showed that there was no structural change of TPE or pristine polymers after applying the low-power CO2 laser on the surface of materials. CO2 laser cutting will be a new technique in this industry, and this analysis will assist the manufacturing industry to choose a suitable laser system with exhaustive information of process parameters for cutting or machining of rubber, TPEs, and TPVs.

This paper presented the experiments of Nd:YAG pulsed laser cutting of titanium alloy, super-alloy and stainless steel sheet, and investigated the influences of different laser cutting parameters on the surface quality factors focusing surface morphology. In comparison with air-, argon- and nitrogen-assisted laser cutting, argon-assisted laser cutting comes with unaffected surface quality and is suitable for laser cutting with subsequent welding requirement. With analyzing the interaction between pulses overlapping rate and energy, the results show that medium pulse overlapping rate and lower pulse rate helps to improve the surface roughness with pulsed laser cutting. And the results would be beneficial to find optimum cutting parameters for good separation surface.

This paper presents an experimental study carried out on Nimonic 263 alloy sheets to determine the optimal combination of laser cutting control factors (assisted gas pressure, beam focus position, laser power, and cutting speed), with respect to multiple characteristics of the cut area. With the aim of designing laser cutting parameters that satisfy the specifications of multiple responses, an advanced multiresponse optimization methodology was used. After the processing of experimental data to develop the process measure using statistical methods, the functional relationship between cutting parameters and the process measure was determined by artificial neural networks (ANNs). Using the trained ANN model, particle swarm optimization (PSO) was employed to find the optimal values of laser cutting parameters. Since the effectiveness of PSO could be affected by its parameter tuning, the settings of PSO algorithm-specific parameters were analyzed in detail. The optimal laser cutting parameters proposed by PSO were implemented in the validation run, showing the superior cut characteristics produced by the optimized parameters and proving the efficacy of the suggested approach in practice. In particular, it is demonstrated that the quality of the Nimonic 263 cut area and the microstructure were significantly improved, as well as the mechanical characteristics.

In orthopedic surgery, it is easy to do harm to surrounding tissues, so the study of bone cutting is necessary. In this article, a finite element model (FEM) of orthogonal bone cutting is developed. Cutting force intra-operatively can provide the surgeon with additional on-line information to support him to control quality of cutting surface. The obtained cutting force decreased little with cutting speed increasing, but ascended evidently with cutting depth increasing. The results of finite element simulations are aimed at providing optimization of cutting parameters and the basic information for hybrid force-velocity control of a robot-assisted bone milling system.
