This paper presented the experiments of Nd:YAG pulsed laser cutting of titanium alloy, super-alloy and stainless steel sheet, and investigated the influences of different laser cutting parameters on the surface quality factors focusing surface morphology. In comparison with air-, argon- and nitrogen-assisted laser cutting, argon-assisted laser cutting comes with unaffected surface quality and is suitable for laser cutting with subsequent welding requirement. With analyzing the interaction between pulses overlapping rate and energy, the results show that medium pulse overlapping rate and lower pulse rate helps to improve the surface roughness with pulsed laser cutting. And the results would be beneficial to find optimum cutting parameters for good separation surface.

This paper presents the study of the influence of cutting parameters on surface quality in laser cutting of metallic materials. In this paper, it is shown which of the cutting parameters have the greatest influence on the quality of the processed surfaces by measuring various roughness parameters. After the experimental research was carried out a ranking of the factors of influence on the response functions was made, also graphs of dependency to various parameters of roughness were made.

This paper presents the experiments of Nd:YAG pulsed laser cutting of GH3536 superalloy sheet and investigates the influences of different cutting parameters on laser cut quality factors including recast layer, kerf width and dross formation. The results show that the recast layer possesses finer granularity and higher hardness than those of the matrix, and the thickness of recast layer increases with increased pulse energy and decreases as the cutting speed and gas pressure increase. Oxygen-assisted cutting comes with thick recast layers and argon-assisted cutting acquires thin layers. The low-strength oxide layer worsens the kerf surfaces in oxygen-assisted cutting while argon-assisted cutting produces unaffected surface quality and is suitable for applications with subsequent welding.

An experimental analysis is presented which investigates the relationship between cutting parameters and the volume of material removal as well as its cutting quality on a Nd:YAG laser cutting system. The parameters that varied on two testing thickness during cutting include cutting speed, incident laser power and focal position in a continuous through cut. Various trends of the kerf geometrical features in terms of the varying process parameters are analyzed and shown to be reasonable. Discussions are also given on kerf geometry control in situations with cutting parameters. It shows that the effects of varying parameters such as cutting speed, laser power and focal position on cutting kerf width, surface roughness, and striation that have provided a deeper understanding of the laser machining.

Milling processing is an important way to obtain wood–polyethylene composite (WPC) end products. In order to improve the processing efficiency and surface quality of WPC and meet the practical application requirements, this paper focussed on morphology and roughness of the WPC-milled surface and studied surface quality changes under different cutting parameters and milling methods through multi-parameters milling experiments. The milling surface morphology and roughness of WPC were analyzed and measured during cut-in, cutting and cut-out sections. It also revealed the affect rule of different cutting parameters and milling methods on milled surface morphology and roughness. The results show that the milling surface roughness of WPC products with wood powder content of 70% is significantly larger than the one whose wood powder content is 60%, and defects such as holes are also relatively more. Finally, a surface roughness prediction model was established based on the mathematical regression method and its multi-factor simulation was carried out. A comparative analysis of predictive and experimental values was performed to verify the reliability of the model. It could also provide theoretical guidance and technical guarantee for high processing quality of WPC milling and cutting.

This paper presents a study of cutting strategies on the surface generation in single-point diamond turning of micro V-groove patterns on precision roller drums. An aluminium precision roller drum with a diameter 250mm and 100 long was diamond turned with a V-groove pattern. A series of cutting experiments were designed to study the effect of the variation of various cutting parameters and cutting tool paths on the surface quality in diamond turning of the precision roller drum. The parameters under investigation included the depth of cut, number of steps and the depth for each cut when diamond turning V-grooves on the cylindrical surface of a workpiece. The measurement result indicates that the surface quality of V-grooves machined on the precision roller drums is affected by cutting strategies. The optimal cutting strategy for machining a V-groove pattern on a precision drum with 5µm depth was obtained.

This paper investigates high power CO2 laser cutting of 5mm-thick Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets, aiming to evaluate the effects of various laser cutting parameters on surface roughness. Using multiple linear regression, a mathematical model based on experimental data was proposed to predict the maximum height of the surface Sz as a function of two laser cutting parameters, namely cutting speed and assist-gas pressure. The adequacy of the proposed model was validated by Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA). Experimental data were compared with the model’s data to verify the capacity of the proposed model. The results indicated that for fixed laser power, cutting speed is the predominant cutting parameter that affects the maximum height of surface roughness.

The main objective of the research covered in this paper is to present results for the quality of surfaces thermally cut with a laser beam. The variety of steel materials used as samples on which laser cutting is performed are the following Č.0146 (1.0330), Č.0147 (1.0333), Č.2131 (1.5024), SS Ferbec CR, HARDOX 450 and HARDOX 550. Thermal cutting is carried out with a CNC controlled Fiber laser BAYKAL type BLS–F–1530. The quality of the cut surface is analyzed based on varying the power of the laser beam, changing cutting speed and the type of additional gas (oxygen, air and nitrogen). By visual inspection, measuring the roughness of the cut surface and measuring the width of the intersection, it is determined the influence of the factors like type of the base material, type of gases, the power of thelaser beam and the cutting speed, in accordance with the standards DIN EN ISO 9013-2002 and the JUS C.T3.022.

Abstract The current state of surface roughness focuses on the 2D roughness. However, there are shortcomings in evaluating surface quality of particle reinforced metal matrix composites using 2D roughness due to the fact that the measuring direction has a vital impact on the 2D roughness value. It is therefore of great importance and significance to develop a proper criterion for measuring and evaluating the surface roughness of cutting particle reinforced metal matrix composites. In this paper, an experimental investigation was performed on the effect of cutting parameters on the surface roughness in cutting in-situ TiB2/7050Al MMCs. The 2D roughness Ra, 3D roughness Sa and Sq were comparatively studied for evaluating the machined surface quality of in-situ TiB2/7050Al MMCs. The influence of cutting parameters on the surface roughness was also analyzed. The big difference between roughness Ra measured along cutting and feed directions showed the great impact of measuring direction. Besides, surface defects such as pits, grooves, protuberances and voids were observed, which would influence 2D roughness value greatly, indicating that 3D roughness was more suitable for evaluating surface quality of cutting in-situ TiB2/7050Al MMCs. The cutting depth and feed rate were found to have the highest influence on 3D roughness while the effect of cutting speed was minimal. With increasing feed rate, cutting depth or width, the 3D roughness increased accordingly. But it decreased as cutting speed increased.
