This paper presents several test cases that were used to validate the implementation of two turbulence models in the UNS3D code, an in-house code. The two turbulence models used were the Shear Stress Transport model and the Spalart–Allmaras model. These turbulence models were explored using the numerical results generated by three computational fluid dynamics codes: NASA’s FUN3D and CFL3D, and UNS3D. Four cases were considered: a flat plate case, an airfoil near-wake, a backward-facing step, and a turbine cascade known as the Eleventh Standard Configuration. The numerical results were compared among themselves and against experimental data.

This paper reports a computational fluid dynamics and experimental study to analyze the effect of surface thermal radiation on the turbulent natural convection in a closed cubic cavity. Experimental and numerical results are compared for low and high wall emissivities. Experimental temperature profiles were obtained at six different depths and heights consisting of 14 thermocouples each. Several turbulence models were evaluated against experimental data. It was found that renormalized [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and standard [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] turbulence models present the best agreement with the experimental data for emissivities of walls of 0.98 and 0.03, respectively. Thus, the numerical results of temperature fields and flow patterns were obtained with these models. From the results, it was found that the effect of thermal radiation on experimental heat transfer coefficients is significantly, increased between 48.7% ([Formula: see text]) and 50.16% ([Formula: see text]), when the emissivity of the walls increases from 0.03 to 0.98. Therefore, the radiative exchange should not be neglected in heat transfer calculations in cubic enclosures, even if the temperature difference between heated wall and cold wall is relatively small (between 15 and 30[Formula: see text]K).

A numerical study of the evaluation of turbulence models for predicting the thermal stratification phenomenon is presented. The tested models are the elliptic blending turbulence model (EBM), the two-layer model, the shear stress transport model (SST), and the elliptic relaxation model (V2-f). These four turbulence models are applied to the prediction of a thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor experimented at the Japan Nuclear Cooperation (JNC). The EBM and V2-f models predict properly the steep gradient of the temperature at the interface of the cold and hot regions that is observed in the experimental data, and the EBM and V2-f models have the capability of predicting the temporal oscillation of the temperature. The two-layer and SST models predict the diffusive temperature gradient at the interface of a thermal stratification and fail to predict a temporal oscillation of the temperature. In general, the EBM predicts best the thermal stratification phenomenon in the upper plenum of the liquid metal reactor.

This paper presents a thorough assessment for two of the contemporary CFD programs available for modeling and predicting nonfilm-cooled surface heat transfer distributions on turbine airfoil surfaces. The CFD programs are capable of predicting laminar-turbulent transition and have been evaluated and validated against five test cases with experimental data. The suite of test cases considered for this study consists of two flat plat cases at zero and non-zero pressure gradient and three linear-turbine-cascade test cases that are representative of modern high pressure turbine designs. The flat plate test cases are the ERCOFTAC T3A and T3C2, while the linear turbine cascade cases are the MARKII, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), and the Von Karman Institute (VKI) turbine cascades. The numerical tools assessed in this study are 3D viscous Reynolds Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations programs that employ a variety of one-equation and two-equation models for turbulence closure. The assessment study focuses on the one-equation Spalart and Allmaras and the two-equation shear stress transport K-ω turbulence models with the ability of modeling and predicting laminar-turbulent transition. The RANS 3D viscous codes are Numeca’s Fine Turbo and ANSYS-CFX’ CFX5. Numerical results for skin friction, surface temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficient from the CFD programs are compared to measured experimental data. Sensitivity of the predictions to free stream turbulence and to inlet turbulence boundary conditions is also presented. The results of the study clearly illustrate the superiority of using the laminar-turbulent transition prediction in improving the accuracy of predicting the heat transfer coefficient on the surfaces of high pressure turbine airfoils.

Abstract This article presents the numerical results of a new film cooling design that combines the backward injection hole with Barchan-dune-shaped shells (BH-BDS).The performance of this novel design in improving the film cooling effectiveness is compared to other configurations, forward injection hole (FH), backward injection hole (BH), and the configuration that combines the forward injection with Barchan-dune-shaped shells (FH-BDS). Three blowing ratios are considered in this article, M = 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5. The air coolant was injected through holes inclined at 35 and 155 deg for forward and backward cases, respectively. The lateral-averaged film cooling effectiveness and the distribution of adiabatic film cooling efficiency are studied using commercial software ansys-cfx. Three turbulence models, including the k–ω shear stress transport model, standard k–ε, and renormalization group theory (RNG) k–ε are examined in this investigation. The RNG k–ε model is adopted for the present simulation. The main result of this study reveals that the presence of upstream dune-shaped shells with backward hole yield a better film cooling effectiveness especially at higher blowing ratios (M ≥ 1). At M = 1.5, the FH-BDS and BH-BS cases provide an improvement in the area weighted average film cooling approximately about 24.79% and 10.56%, respectively. The BH-BDS design reduces the pressure loss as compared to BH.

This paper deals with a comparative study of the outlet pressure-energy between a conventional and normal blade impeller and an airfoil-shaped blade impeller of a centrifugal pump. Although the volute casing is an important component along with an impeller [1], the present comparative analysis makes the volute casing redundant to the study, hence neglected. All centrifugal pumps are usually designed and manufactured using backward swept blades with equal camber on the top and bottom sides. An increased camber on the top side is an ideal trait for a lift generating airfoil. The purpose is to implement the principle of lift generation of airfoil for centrifugal pumps. As a result, a local suction side and pressure side can be visualized using CFX-post processor. The 3D analysis of such a centrifugal pump impeller is designed in SOLIDWORKS® and analyzed using ANSYS® CFX. The SST (Menter’s Shear Stress Transport) model is used as it combines both the k-ω and k-ε turbulence models.

The present work is focused on the prediction of the fluid dynamics behaviour for natural gas burners characterized by low NOx emissions. The fluid dynamics in the combustion chamber is investigated in order to look for the condition under which it is possible to obtain a diluted combustion. The experimental data used as reference come from two set of tests related to different isothermal flow behaviour: high Reynolds number (Re = 68000) and lower Reynolds number (Re = 5427). Many turbulence models are examined in order to validate high and low Reynolds case. The k-ω models implemented by Wilcox in 1998 seems to properly predict the fluid dynamics behaviour of the jet for high Reynolds numbers, while, for low Reynolds jets, a modification needs to be introduced. The numerical analysis for low Reynolds number, based on an unstructured 2D axial symmetrical grid, shows that no two-equation turbulence models fit the experimental data for low Reynolds jet. Based on the evidence that at low Reynolds number the hypothesis of homogeneous isotropic small turbulence eddy is not valid a modification of k-ω turbulence model’s closure constant has been proposed. This leads to a better agreement with the experimental data. The results demonstrate that great attention needs to be taken and invested in the identification of the turbulence models used in CFD and in the proper tunneling (of the closure coefficient for the turbulence model) that need to be computed case by case accordingly with the specific turbulence level and fluid dynamic features of the jet itself.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate numerically the turbulent flow characteristics over a backward facing step. Different turbulence models with hybrid computational grid have been used to study the detached flow structure in this case. Comparison between the numerical results and the available experiment data is carried out in the present study. The results of the different turbulence models were in a good agreement with the experimental results. The numerical results also concluded that the k-kl-ω turbulence model gave favorable results compared with the experiment. Design/methodology/approach It is very important to study the flow characteristics of detached flows. Therefore, the current study investigates numerically the flow characteristics in backward facing step by using two-, three- and seven-equation turbulence models in the finite volume code ANSYS Fluent. In addition, hybrid grid has been used to improve the capability of the unstructured mesh elements for predicting the flow separation in this case. Comparison between the different turbulence models and the available experimental data was done to find the most suitable turbulence model for simulating such cases of detached flows. Findings The present numerical simulations with the different turbulence models predicted efficiently the flow characteristics over the backward facing step. The transition k-kl-ω gave the best acceptable results compared with experimental data. This is a good concluded remark in the fields of fluid mechanics and hydrodynamics because the phenomenon of flow separation is not easy to be predicted numerically and can affect greatly on the predicted drag of moving bodies in many engineering applications. Originality/value The CFD results of using different turbulence models have been validated with the experimental work, and the results of k-kl-ω proven acceptable with flow characteristics. The results of the current study conclude that the use of k-kl-ω turbulence model will contribute towards a more efficient utilization in the fields of fluid mechanics and hydrodynamics.

This study uses a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach to simulate flows in Parshall flumes, which are used to measure flowrates in channels. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data, which show that choosing the right turbulence model, e.g., v2−f and LC, is the key element in accurately simulating Parshall flumes. The Standard Error of Estimate (SEE) values were very low, i.e., 0.76% and 1.00%, respectively, for the two models mentioned above. The Parshall flume used for this experiment is a good example of a hydraulic structure for which the design can be more improved by implementing a CFD approach compared with a laboratory (physical) modeling approach, which is often costly and time-consuming.

Abstract. The actuator line (AL) was intended as a lifting line (LL) technique for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. In this paper we prove – theoretically and practically – that smearing the forces of the actuator line in the flow domain forms a viscous core in the bound and shed vorticity of the line. By combining a near-wake representation of the trailed vorticity with a viscous vortex core model, the missing induction from the smeared velocity is recovered. This novel dynamic smearing correction is verified for basic wing test cases and rotor simulations of a multimegawatt turbine. The latter cover the entire operational wind speed range as well as yaw, strong turbulence and pitch step cases. The correction is validated with lifting line simulations with and without viscous core, which are representative of an actuator line without and with smearing correction, respectively. The dynamic smearing correction makes the actuator line effectively act as a lifting line, as it was originally intended.

The control of turbulent separated flow over the backward-facing step is numerically investigated with various turbulence models ranging from one equation Spalart & Allmaras (1992), two-equation K-ω closures (Wilcox, 1988; Menter, 1993) to a full Reynolds stress transport model based on the Reynolds stress transport Rij-ω model (Deng & Visonneau, 1999). Results are compared with experimental data of Yoshioka et al. (1999) where the flow control was monitoring with alternating suction/injection at the step height. It is shown that the effect of that local perturbation is better represented using the Rij-ω turbulence model.
