The objective of this study was to test higher-order statistical (HOS) parameters for the classification of young and elderly voice signals and identify gender- and age-related differences through HOS analysis. This study was based on data from 116 subjects (58 females and 58 males) extracted from the Saarbruecken voice database. In the gender analysis, the same number of voice samples were analyzed for each sex. Further, we conducted experiments on the voices of elderly people using gender analysis. Finally, we reviewed the standards and reference models to reduce sex and gender bias. The acoustic parameters were extracted from young and elderly voice signals using Praat and a time–frequency analysis program (TF32). Additionally, we investigated the gender- and age-related differences in HOS parameters. Young and elderly voice signals significantly differed in normalized skewness (p = 0.005) in women and normalized kurtosis (p = 0.011) in men. Therefore, normalized skewness is a useful parameter for distinguishing between young and elderly female voices, and normalized kurtosis is essential for distinguishing between young and elderly male voices. We will continue to investigate parameters that represent important information in elderly voice signals.

Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DTMRI) has proved useful for microstructure characterization of the brain. This technique also helps determining complex connectivity of fiber tracts. The brain white matter (BMW) changes with respect to age and corresponding appearance of white-matter lesions among the brain’s message-carrying axons affects cognitive functions in old age. In this paper, the observed morphology in BWM on ageing is analyzed using statistical parameters extracted from DTMR images of different age groups. The gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) obtained from the segmented images gives 14 textural features, subsets of which are adopted as the input sets in a backpropagation neural network classifier. The network is trained to predict the age based on BMW details used as the inputs. The proposed method helps in understanding the age-related changes in white matter. This is useful for the physician in understanding miscorrelation in motor activities and relevant causes in elderly subjects.

Background: Recently, some authors have defined new molecular descriptors (MDs) based on the use of the Graph Discrete Derivative, known as Graph Derivative Indices (GDI). This new approach about discrete derivatives over various elements from a graph takes as outset the formation of subgraphs. Previously, these definitions were extended into the chemical context (N-tuples) and interpreted in structural/physicalchemical terms as well as applied into the description of several endpoints, with good results. Objective: A generalization of GDIs using the definitions of Higher Order and Mixed Derivative for molecular graphs is proposed as a generalization of the previous works, allowing the generation of a new family of MDs. Methods: An extension of the previously defined GDIs is presented, and for this purpose, the concept of Higher Order Derivatives and Mixed Derivatives is introduced. These novel approaches to obtaining MDs based on the concepts of discrete derivatives (finite difference) of the molecular graphs use the elements of the hypermatrices conceived from 12 different ways (12 events) of fragmenting the molecular structures. The result of applying the higher order and mixed GDIs over any molecular structure allows finding Local Vertex Invariants (LOVIs) for atom-pairs, for atoms-pairs-pairs and so on. All new families of GDIs are implemented in a computational software denominated DIVATI (acronym for Discrete DeriVAtive Type Indices), a module of KeysFinder Framework in TOMOCOMD-CARDD system. Results: QSAR modeling of the biological activity (Log 1/K) of 31 steroids reveals that the GDIs obtained using the higher order and mixed GDIs approaches yield slightly higher performance compared to previously reported approaches based on the duplex, triplex and quadruplex matrix. In fact, the statistical parameters for models obtained with the higher-order and mixed GDI method are superior to those reported in the literature by using other 0-3D QSAR methods. Conclusion: It can be suggested that the higher-order and mixed GDIs, appear as a promissory tool in QSAR/QSPRs, similarity/dissimilarity analysis and virtual screening studies.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) maintain cholesterol homeostasis through the role they play in regulating reverse cholesterol transport (RCT), a process by which excess cholesterol is transported back to the liver for elimination. However, RCT can be altered in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors, such as aging, which contributes to the increase in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) intake on the cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) of HDL, and to elucidate on the mechanisms by which EVOO intake improves the anti-atherogenic activity of HDL. A total of 84 healthy women and men were enrolled and were distributed, according to age, into two groups: 27 young (31.81 ± 6.79 years) and 57 elderly (70.72 ± 5.6 years) subjects. The subjects in both groups were given 25 mL/d of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) for 12 weeks. CEC was measured using J774 macrophages radiolabeled with tritiated cholesterol ((3H) cholesterol). HDL subclass distributions were analyzed using the Quantimetrix Lipoprint® system. The HDL from the elderly subjects exhibited a lower level of CEC, at 11.12% (p < 0.0001), than the HDL from the young subjects. The CEC of the elderly subjects returned to normal levels following 12 weeks of EVOO intake. An analysis of the distribution of HDL subclasses showed that HDL from the elderly subjects were composed of lower levels of large HDL (L-HDL) (p < 0.03) and higher levels of small HDL (S-HDL) (p < 0.002) compared to HDL from the young subjects. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between CEC and L-HDL levels (r = 0.35 and p < 0.001) as well as an inverse correlation between CEC and S-HDL levels (r = −0.27 and p < 0.01). This correlation remained significant even when several variables, including age, sex, and BMI as well as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and glucose levels (β = 0.28, p < 0.002, and β = 0.24, p = 0.01) were accounted for. Consuming EVOO for 12 weeks modulated the age-related difference in the distribution of HDL subclasses by reducing the level of S-HDL and increasing the level of intermediate-HDL/large-HDL (I-HDL/L-HDL) in the elderly subjects. The age-related alteration of the CEC of HDL was due, in part, to an alteration in the distribution of HDL subclasses. A diet enriched in EVOO improved the functionality of HDL through an increase in I-HDL/L-HDL and a decrease in S-HDL.

Abstract Background Some observational studies have found a significant association between the use of statin and a reduced risk of dementia. However, the results of these studies are unclear in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study is to determine the association between the use of statins and the incidence of dementia according to sex and age-related differences in patients with RA. Methods We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database (2003–2016). The primary outcome assessed was the risk of dementia by estimating hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Multiple Cox regression was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio of new-onset dementia. Subgroup analysis was also conducted. Results Among the 264,036 eligible patients with RA aged > 40 years, statin users were compared with non-statin users by propensity score matching at a ratio of 1:1 (25,764 in each group). However, no association was found between the use of statins and the risk of new-onset dementia (NOD) in patients with RA (HR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.97–1.06). The subgroup analysis identified the use of statin as having a protective effect against developing NOD in male and older patients. Conclusion No association was observed between the use of a statin and the risk of NOD in patients with RA, including patients of both genders and aged 40–60 years, but these parameters were affected by gender and age. The decreased risk of NOD in patients with RA was greater among older male patients. Use of a statin in older male (> 60 years) patients with RA may be needed in clinical practice to prevent dementia.

1. Neutrophils from drug-free elderly subjects produced approximately 50% less cyclic AMP in response to isoprenaline than did neutrophils from young subjects. A significant difference in basal cyclic AMP levels was also evident (elderly 2.8 ± 0.37; young 4.9 ± 0.36 pmol of cAMP/107 cells; P < 0.05). 2. With a range of anti-neutrophil monoclonal antibodies no evidence of age-related neutrophil population heterogeneity was found. 3. These findings indicate that the age-related decline in β-adrenoceptor responsiveness is not due to changes in the neutrophil population. 4. The present results support the hypothesis that there is a generalized decline in β-adrenoceptor-mediated responsiveness in the elderly.

Autobiographical memories in young and elderly normal subjects are drawn mostly from the recent past but elderly subjects relate a second peak of memories from early adulthood. Memory for remote past public events is relatively preserved in dementia, possibly reflecting integrity of semantic relative to episodic memory. We examined recall of specific, consistent autobiographical episodes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in response to cue words. Patients and control subjects drew most memories from the recent 20 years: episode age related to anterograde memory function but not subject age or dementia. Subjects also related a secondary peak of memories from early adulthood; episode age related to subject age and severity of dementia. The results suggest that preferential recall of memories from early adulthood is based on the salience of retrieval cues, altered by age and dementia, superimposed on a temporal gradient of semantic memory. Further, AD shows behavioural similarity to normal ageing.

Developing nations in Asia are posed to experience a significant increase in the population of older adults living in their respective societies. Over the coming decades, India, the second most populous country in the entire world, is poised to experience a significant increase in its elder population. As a result there has been increased research on attitudes toward older adults. When one thinks of elder care, one typically thinks of it in terms of one’s own family and country, older adults need family support and family care as well as support from the community. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of gender and age on attitude toward caring for elderly in a culturally diverse country like India. There were 300 participants ranging in age from 25-35, 45-65 and 65+ who took part in the study. It was hypothesized that a) females as compared to males exhibit more favorable attitude toward caring for elderly greater anxiety, b) older respondents in comparison to younger respondents chow more favorable attitude toward caring for elderly. A survey method was used in this study and participants were required to complete the attitude toward caring for elderly scale and also give responses to some single measures items to show attitude toward caring for elderly.

This paper presents a new gender and age classification system based on Electroencephalography (EEG) brain signals. First, Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) technique is used to get the time-frequency information of only one EEG electrode for eight distinct emotional states instead of the ordinary neutral or relax states. Then, sequential steps are implemented to extract the improved grayscale image feature. For system evaluation, a three-fold-cross validation strategy is applied to construct four different classifiers. The experimental test shows that the proposed extracted feature with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier improves the performance of both gender and age classification, and achieves an average accuracy of 96.3% and 89% for gender and age classification, respectively. Moreover, the ability to predict human gender and age during the mood of different emotional states is practically approved.

Graded intraesophageal balloon distension (IEBD) has been utilized in the past to evaluate esophageal pain thresholds. With use of a technique that we have found to provide reproducible results for pain thresholds, two groups of normal individuals without esophageal symptoms or diabetes were studied. Group 1 included 10 "young" (age < 65 yr) individuals (mean age 27 yr, range 18-57 yr). Group 2 included 17 individuals age 65 yr or greater (mean age 72.5 yr, range 65-87 yr). Catheters with latex balloons (Wilson-Cook) were used in all 27 subjects with the balloon located 10 cm above the lower esophageal sphincter. Sequential inflations of 2-ml increments were performed until a total volume of 2 ml above the point of pain or to a maximum of 30 ml was reached. A series of two sequential inflations were performed on each subject on the day of the testing, and the mean value was taken to indicate pain threshold volumes for all 27 subjects. In the group of elderly volunteers, 5 subjects felt no pain even at the maximum inflatable volume of the balloon (30 ml) and were assigned a maximum threshold value of 30 ml. Mean pain threshold volumes for the young subjects was 17 +/- 0.8 ml of air (+/- SE) and for the elderly subjects was 27 +/- 1.4 ml (P < 0.01 and 95% confidence interval = 7.1-13.3). Our conclusion is that IEBD results in the esophagus indicate an age-related decrease in human visceral pain threshold.

Background: Optimal implant alignment is important for total hip replacement (THR) longevity. Femoral stem anteversion is influenced by the native femoral anteversion. Knowing a patient’s femoral morphology is therefore important when planning optimal THR alignment. We investigated variation in femoral anteversion across a patient population requiring THR. Methods: Preoperatively, native femoral neck anteversion was measured from 3-dimensional CT reconstructions in 1215 patients. Results: The median femoral anteversion was 14.4° (−27.1–54.5°, IQR 7.4–20.9°). There were significant gender differences (males 12.7°, females 16.0°; p < 0.0001). Femoral anteversion in males decreased significantly with increasing age. 14% of patients had extreme anteversion (<0° or >30°). Conclusions: This is the largest series investigating native femoral anteversion in a THR population. Patient variation was large and was similar to published findings of a non-THR population. Gender and age-related differences were observed. Native femoral anteversion is patient-specific and should be considered when planning THR.
