This study presents an analysis of the impact of the oxide layers, prepared utilizing fiber laser radiation (1062 nm) in ambient air with different process parameters, on the corrosion resistance of EN 5754 aluminum alloy. Due to both high corrosion resistance and high fatigue strength, a 5754 alloy is used, among others, in the marine, aerospace, automotive, and chemical industries. Nevertheless, it corrodes in aggressive environments (with high chloride ions concentration). The controlled delivery of laser radiation energy in the oxygen environment allows the formation of the oxide layer on the surface of the material. We have determined that it significantly affects the resistance of these materials to corrosion. As a result of laser irradiation, changes in the chemical structure of the surface layer (chemical composition as well as surface development) can be observed. It may exert both a positive and a negative consequence on the corrosion resistance. The electrochemical corrosion tests (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS) have been carried out in an aggressive environment (3% NaCl). Moreover, microscopic examination, chemical tests, and roughness were also performed. The study revealed that appropriate control of the laser process can significantly increase the original corrosion resistance of the 5754 aluminum alloy.

The quenching condition of aluminum alloy can affect the mechanical property and corrosion resistance of the profile. This paper is aimed at the low quench sensitivity of aluminum alloys. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze precipitate behaviors of the 7A46 aluminum alloy under different isothermal cooling conditions and microstructure evolutions of quench-induced precipitations. The effect of the different isothermal time on the corrosion resistance of the alloy, and the relationship between microstructure and corrosion resistance after quenching were revealed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Results show that corrosion sensitivity of the quenching-aged alloy is much higher than that of the double-aged (DA) alloy, and the corrosion resistance of the quenched alloy decreases firstly and then increases. Due to the high density of the matrix precipitates, the increased content of the impurity element, the discontinuity of the grain boundary precipitates and the widening of the precipitates free zone, the most serious degree of corrosion performance among the quenched alloys is 295 °C at 800 s, and the self-corrosion potential and self-current density is −0.919 V and 2.371 μA/cm2, respectively.

Abstract This paper aims to review the impact of different factors influencing the corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-P based coatings. Emphasis has been given onto the impact of phosphorus content, incorporation of alloying elements, addition of particles and heat treatment which have been discussed in detail and critically reviewed. The effect of corrosive media and coating process parameters on corrosion resistance are studied concisely. Furthermore, the role of the incorporation of various elements and particles’ contents on the corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-P coating are studied systematically. This paper also presents an overview of the latest electrochemical corrosion measuring techniques. The following approaches deserve special attention in the analysis: localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET), scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET), scanning droplet cell (SDC), scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) and novel contactless technique (NCT).

Anodic oxide films were prepared by anodic oxidation on the surface of ADC12 aluminum alloy and their corrosion properties were explored. The original samples, anodized samples, and sealed samples were placed in the salt spray corrosion chamber and were taken out at different times. Then the corrosion resistance of the ADC12 aluminum alloy was discussed, and the electrochemical corrosion test was researched. The results indicated that the surface of the original samples reveals many large-area pits after salt spray corrosion, while the sealed samples present a smoother surface. The dense oxide films on the surface of the base metals effectively prevent Cl[Formula: see text] entering into aluminum alloys especially after sealing. Electrochemical tests including the potential polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as functions of exposure time were employed to reveal the corrosion behavior of surface layers. After the sealing treatment on the oxide films, the corrosion potential moved in the positive direction, the corrosion current density decreased, and the corrosion resistance of the ADC12 aluminum alloy was significantly improved.

Reinforced steel bars (rebar) are extensively used in construction, and the main challenge is in minimizing corrosion due to oxide or passive layer breakdown. In contrast, dual-phase (DP) steel has good corrosion resistance. This study investigated the effect of Cl− ions on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of DP rebar and conventional rebar. Corrosion behavior studies and electrochemical measurements were conducted on DP rebar and conventional rebar in simulated concrete pore solution with different concentrations of Cl− ions. Microstructure analysis, surface morphology analysis, and corroded surface characterization were performed using optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that DP rebar has good passivity, leading to better corrosion resistance and greater strength compared to ordinary rebar. In addition, DP rebar showed better passivity behavior compared to conventional rebar in alkaline solution. Therefore, the presence of a dual phase (ferrite and martensite) in reinforced concrete structured steel induces good corrosion resistance.

In the present investigation, the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was employed to form aluminum oxide coating layers to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys. The formed protective coating layers were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and characterized by several electrochemical techniques, including open circuit potential (OCP), linear potentiodynamic polarization (LP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results were reported in comparison with the bare 6061-O aluminum alloy to determine the corrosion performance of the coated 6061-O alloy. The PEO-treated aluminum alloy showed substantially higher corrosion resistance in comparison with the untreated substrate material. A relationship was found between the coating formation stage, process parameters and the thickness of the oxide-formed layers, which has a measurable influence on enhancing corrosion resistance properties. This study demonstrates promising results of utilizing PEO process to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys and could be recommended as a method used in industrial applications.

El estudio de la resistencia a la corrosión del anodizado de una aleación de aluminio (AA6063) en ácido sulfúrico a diferentes tiempos de anodizado: 30, 45 y 60 min. se realizó usando la espectroscopia de impedancia electroquímica (EIE) y el ensayo de niebla salina ácida. (ASTM B287). Los datos obtenidos por EIE y su correlación con los circuitos equivalentes más apropiados permitieron determinar los parámetros asociados a la capa porosa y a la capa barrera del óxido protector formado sobre la superficie del aluminio en estudio. La exposición de las muestras anodizadas durante 250h a una niebla salina ácida permitió observar variaciones en su masa. De los resultados obtenidos por EIE y las pérdidas de masa de las muestras anodizadas se estableció que la película de anodizado de 45 minutos mostró una mayor resistencia a la corrosión en comparación con la obtenida a 60 y 30 min., respectivamente. From the results obtained by EIS and the mass losses of the anodized samples was established that the anodized film of 45 minutes showed higher corrosion resistance compared to that obtained at 60 and 30 min, respectively. Chromium pre-treatments of metal have been replaced by silane pre-treatments as more environmental friendly option. Nanoparticles can be added in the silane sol-gel network have been reported to improve corrosion resistance. In this work, the electrochemical corrosion resistance of low carbon steel coated with hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel film filled with nanoparticles was evaluated. The sol-gel films have been synthesized from 3-glycidoxy-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (3-GPTMS) and tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) precursors. These films have been impregnated with 300 ppm of silica or alumina nanoparticles. The electrochemical behavior of the coated steel was evaluated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Equivalent circuit modeling, used for quantifying the EIS measurements showed that sol-gel films containing silica nanoparticles improved the barrier properties of the silane coating. The silica nanoparticle-containing films showed highest initial pore resistance over the five days of immersion in 0.05M NaCl.

The purpose of this chapter of the book is to present knowledge on the use of laser technology in silicon photovoltaic cell manufacturing processes. Particular consideration was given to the technique of using a disk laser to cut the edges of silicon wafers together with the recognition of the flow of laser micromachining on the quality of cut edges to obtain their minimal deformation. The second topic described is the method of producing point contacts employing laser radiation between a layer of vaporised aluminium and crystalline silicon using the Nd:YAG laser. The results illustrating the impact of the structure and parameters of point contact for a given laser radiation energy on basic electrical parameters for complete, prototype solar cells are included. The chapter in the book provides an overview of the literature on the above topics and presents selected results of experimental works carried out by the authors. The motive for its publication is the need to present selected results of own research carried out in the Welding Department cooperating for many years with the Institute of Engineering and Biomedical Materials (IMIiB) of the Silesian University of Technology and the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (IMIM) of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow.

The oxidation of aluminum machining chips retards the successful recycling through the conventional remelting route. A promising approach to overthrow this problem is the utilization of solid state recycling in converting aluminum machining chips directly into semifinished products to eliminate the cost of the remelting process and reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, in recent work, chips of aluminum alloy (AA6061) were recycled by compaction and then extrusion conducted at 500°C, followed by equal channel pressing (ECAP) to study the resultant material properties and its microstructure. Moreover, the present investigation explores the influence of ECAP after hot extrusion on the corrosive behaviour of the recycled samples in saline solution (NaCl) by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization (LP). The results demonstrated a remarkable enhancement of the recycled chips’ properties subjected to hot extrusion followed by the ECAP process. Furthermore, the successive ECAP passes leads to increased film thickness and decreased corrosion rate.

The microstructure and corrosion resistance in H2S environments for various zones of X80 pipeline steel submerged arc welded joints were studied. The main microstructures in the base metal (BM), welded metal (WM), coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ), and fine-grained heat-affected zone (FGHAZ) were mainly polygonal ferrite and granular bainite; acicular ferrite with fine grains; granular bainite, ferrite, and martensite/austenite constituents, respectively. The corrosion behavior differences resulted from the microstructure gradients. The results of the micro-morphologies of the corrosion product films and the electrochemical corrosion characteristics in H2S environments, including open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, showed that the order of corrosion resistance was FGHAZ > BM > WM > CGHAZ.
