This work proposes a fully integrated ecosystem composed of three main components with a complex goal: to implement an autonomous system with a UAV requiring little to no maintenance and capable of flying autonomously. For this goal, was developed an autonomous UAV, an online platform capable of its management and a landing platform to enclose and charge the UAV after flights. Furthermore, a precision landing algorithm ensures no need for human intervention for long-term operations.

Real estate investment trusts (REITs) are a niche alternative investment class. Since their introduction in Asia at the turn of the millennium, the REIT market in the region has experienced phenomenal growth. In particular, the Malaysia REIT (M-REIT ) market capitalisation has seen a spectacular growth of close to 20 folds from its inception in 2005 until the end of 2013. This paper chronicles the development of the M-REIT market which is rather unique as it provides a common platform for the existence of both conventional and Islamic REITs. Empirical tests are also conducted to uncover the returns characteristics of the M-REIT market. M-REIT returns are significantly correlated with domestic stock markets but only weakly correlated with changes in interest rate, with long-term proxies having a stronger impact than short-term proxies. The results from a correlation analysis are further confirmed by regression testing which shows that M-REIT returns are most significantly driven by domestic stock market returns while only mildly by changes in interest rates and not significantly driven by returns in regional REIT markets. These findings possibly imply that M-REITs (i) subscribe more to the characteristics of equity than those of bonds, (ii) are not 'pure' yield-play instruments, (iii) are often regarded as long-term investment, and (iv) may not be fully integrated with global and regional REIT markets.

The work purpose consists in the analysis of the situation in passenger transportation of countryside and bus distribution on routes. The route investigation was carried out at different daytime by means of passenger number calculation and data recordings in the prepared tables during a day, a week, a month and also during the year, that is, using a calculating-table method. The analysis of bus operation on a route allowed drawing conclusions that this route may be favorable for investors and economically profitable. Besides, it is socially necessary for low-income population groups having no their transport vehicles. The investigation novelty consists in the adaptation of a calculating-table method to rural routes. Conclusions: modern automobile passenger transportation company is impossible without efficient passenger transportation management; one of the main components in passenger transportation management is passenger service improvement, which can be achieved only by empiric investigations of passenger flows on the routes; at the proper selection of vehicles the analyzed car route can be commercially profitable and long-term that is ensured by a quantitative analysis of vehicles and specification of bus schedule taking into account the need of population in travels.

Abstract Effective training is critical to providing quality care in long-term care environments, where many residents have dementia. Training has been linked to positive resident care outcomes and improved job satisfaction of staff. The aim of this study was to develop, pilot, and evaluate a Microlearning training curriculum, using short (5-10 minute) “bursts” of training available through an online platform on demand (i.e. 24/7). The expected outcomes were to improve staff knowledge, attitudes, and skills regarding person-centered dementia care and to increase job satisfaction. Researchers translated the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Hand-in-Hand training curriculum into 52 weekly Microlearning lessons delivered via an online platform (accessible by computer, IPad or smart phone) followed by a short quiz. Using pre- and post-tests, nine focus groups, and fourteen telephone interviews, the researchers engaged with a convenience sample of staff (N = 244) working at all levels from direct care to leadership in nine nursing homes in Virginia. Pre- and post-tests comprised items from the Dementia Attitudes Scale and the Nursing Home Nurse Aide Job Satisfaction Scale. Results from a between subjects t-test demonstrated significant improvements in attitudes to people with dementia. Focus groups and interviews revealed high satisfaction with the training with a significant majority agreeing it was a helpful way to learn and that they were able to apply what they had learned to caring for residents. This pilot demonstrates a promising new practice for training long-term care staff. Further research using a control group receiving usual training is indicated.

Median timing of reproduction in salmonid populations is generally consistent among years, reflecting long-term patterns of natural selection from characteristics of the local environment. However, altered selection from factors related to climate change or human intervention might shift timing over generations, with implications for the population’s persistence. To study these processes, we modeled median timing of redd (nest) counts as an index of spawning timing by natural-origin Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Skagit River system in Washington State, USA. Over the last 2–6 decades, natural-origin salmon have been spawning later by 0.03–0.52 days·year–1, while a naturally spawning group that is influenced by strays from a hatchery has been spawning earlier by 0.19 days·year–1. Trends in the spawning timing of hatchery-origin strays may reflect opposing selection from the hatchery, where egg take for propagation has become earlier by 0.58 days·year–1. As mean August river temperatures have risen over the period of record, hatchery timing trends may be moving in the opposite direction from the plastic or adaptive patterns expressed by natural-origin fish.

AbstractIn the present work, we assess the chronology of archaeological sites known as earthen mounds, commonly found at the Pampas biome, among the lowlands of Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. We focused on the Pontal da Barra settlement, which is a testimony of the long-term occupation of indigenous groups in the swamp and wet environment of Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil. A Bayesian chronological model based on the radiocarbon (14C) dating of 17 samples of fish otolith, 5 charcoal fragments, and 2 bones (human and dog) allowed determination of the beginning of the occupation as well as the occupational synchronism of the different mounds. The nature of the samples allows us to study the local 14C reservoir effect through the comparison between the group of marine and terrestrial samples, deriving a reservoir offset value of 63±53 14C yr for this particular area, indicating a strong freshwater influence in the lagoon system. We estimate the start of human intervention in the landscapes of southern Patos Lagoon to be around 2200 cal BP, with the most intense activity between 1800 and 1200 cal BP.

Plastid endosymbiosis has been a major force in the evolution of eukaryotic cellular complexity, but how endosymbionts are integrated is still poorly understood at a mechanistic level. Dinoflagellates, an ecologically important protist lineage, represent a unique model to study this process because dinoflagellate plastids have repeatedly been reduced, lost, and replaced by new plastids, leading to a spectrum of ages and integration levels. Here we describe deep-transcriptomic analyses of the Antarctic Ross Sea dinoflagellate (RSD), which harbors long-term but temporary kleptoplasts stolen from haptophyte prey, and is closely related to dinoflagellates with fully integrated plastids derived from different haptophytes. In some members of this lineage, called the Kareniaceae, their tertiary haptophyte plastids have crossed a tipping point to stable integration, but RSD has not, and may therefore reveal the order of events leading up to endosymbiotic integration. We show that RSD has retained its ancestral secondary plastid and has partitioned functions between this plastid and the kleptoplast. It has also obtained genes for kleptoplast-targeted proteins via horizontal gene transfer (HGT) that are not derived from the kleptoplast lineage. Importantly, many of these HGTs are also found in the related species with fully integrated plastids, which provides direct evidence that genetic integration preceded organelle fixation. Finally, we find that expression of kleptoplast-targeted genes is unaffected by environmental parameters, unlike prey-encoded homologs, suggesting that kleptoplast-targeted HGTs have adapted to posttranscriptional regulation mechanisms of the host.

As part of Datamonitor's alliance and licensing strategic analysis, the authors have completed a two year survey of the trends underlying early-stage drug discovery and development collaborations between October 2002 and September 2004, which included 524 early-stage deals. Deal analysis shows that the leading pharma and biotech companies (fully integrated players) are the principal collaboration seekers, and that target and product innovation is driving the new wave of 21st century deals. These deals cover all phases of early-stage drug development, with lead product/target identification/validation accounting for the greatest proportion of collaborations. This represents a shift away from initial-stage collaborations, which are primarily focused on technologies such as genomics, as a result of the lack of tangible results that such technologies have delivered in the past. Following the continuously increasing demand for late-stage high-value products, the aim of the money and time invested in these early-stage collaborations is to reverse the pipeline productivity crisis currently affecting the industry's leaders over the mid to long term.
