The isolation between the microstrip patches has a great significance to examine the performance of the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antennas. The patch antennas are placed on the top of 1.46 mm thick Rogers RO3003 substrate having a length of 60 mm, a width of 50 mm, and relative permittivity of 3. The distance between the resonators is 0.06λ and they are stimulated by two coaxial probes extended from the bottom ground layer. The defective ground structure of the H-shape slot is inserted on the bottom ground layer to achieve high isolation (mutual coupling reduction). The proposed MIMO antenna operates at 5.3 GHz frequency, which can be used for WiMAX, Wi-Fi, and future 5G services all over the world. The results of the designed structure have been simulated in a finite element method-based solver high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS). The simulated results show that the reflection coefficient (S11) and isolation (S21) at the desired frequency are −32 dB and −41 dB, respectively.

Abstract This paper presents a miniaturized dual-element Super-Wideband (SWB) Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna. The operation bandwidth is enhanced by 175% with a Bandwidth Dimension Ratio (BDR) of 6960, using a tapered microstrip line and employing an improved isolation technique. An inverted T-slot is used in the partial ground plane of the antenna. Isolation is increased up to 25 dB over the operating band (1.6–24.5 GHz) by using a pair of T-shaped stubs and a rectangular strip between them. A detailed analysis of the parameters Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC), Diversity Gain (DG), Mean Effective Gain (MEG), Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC), isolation between the ports, and Channel Capacity Loss (CCL) is undertaken to investigate the performance of proposed SWB MIMO antenna. A prototype of the proposed design is developed by fabricating on the FR–4 (loss tangent 0.02) dielectric substrate of electrical dimension 0.18λ 0 × 0.14λ 0. The measured parameters are in good agreement with the simulated ones. The proposed antenna focusses on 2.4–2.483 GHz frequency band (Bluetooth) and 3.4–3.6 GHz frequency band with a center frequency of 3.5 GHz (as part of the sub 6 GHz 5G band).

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna is at core of the presently available wireless technologies. The design of MIMO antennas over a limited space requires various approaches of mutual coupling reduction, otherwise gain, efficiency, diversity gain, and radiation patterns will be severely affected. Various techniques have been reported in literature to control this degrading factor and to improve the performance of the MIMO antennas. In this review paper, we have carried out an extensive thorough investigation of diversity and mutual coupling (correlation) reduction techniques in compact MIMO antennas.

A dual-port transparent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna resonating at sub-6 GHz 5G band is proposed by using patch/ground material as transparent conductive oxide (AgHT-8) and a transparent Plexiglas substrate. Two identical circular-shaped radiating elements fed by using a microstrip feedline are designed using the finite element method (FEM) based high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) software. The effect of the isolation mechanism is discussed using two cases. In case 1, the two horizontally positioned elements are oriented in a similar direction with a separate ground plane, whereas in case 2, the elements are vertically placed facing opposite to each other with an allied ground. In both cases, the transparent antennas span over a −10 dB band of 4.65 to 4.97 GHz (300 MHz) with isolation greater than 15 dB among two elements. The diversity parameters are also analyzed for both the cases covering the correlation coefficient (ECC), mean effective gain (MEG), diversity gain (DG), and channel capacity loss (CCL). The average gain and efficiency above 1 dBi and 45%, respectively with satisfactory MIMO diversity performance, makes the transparent MIMO antenna an appropriate choice for smart IoT devices working in the sub-6 GHz 5G band by mitigating the co-site location and visual clutter issues.

A single radiator that is a part of four-port diversity Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna design is composed of four octagonal rings embedded between the two opposite sides of a T-shaped conductive layer surrounded by inverted angular edge cut L-shaped and E-shaped structures. The radiators are placed at the four corners with common ground at the center of a smartphone to form a four-element mobile MIMO antenna. The printing of the antenna is carried out on the flexible polyamide substrate (dielectric constant = 3.5 and loss tangent = 0.0027) with dimensions of 70 × 145 × 0.2 mm3. A wide impedance bandwidth of (84.12%) 2.39 to 5.86 GHz is achieved for all four radiators. The compact size of the radiators along with their placement enables the proposed MIMO antenna to occupy much less area while preserving the space for 2G/3G/4G antennas. The placement of the antennas results in self-isolation between antenna elements by achieving isolation greater than 17.5 dB in the desired operating bands. Furthermore, besides showing a high efficiency of 85% and adequate gain above 4 dBi, good diversity performances such as Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) of less than 0.05, Diversity Gain (DG) of above 9.8 dB, Mean Effective Gain (MEG) of −3.1 dB, Channel Capacity of 21.50 bps/Hz, and Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC) of below −10 dB are achieved by the flexible MIMO smartphone antenna. The effect of bending along the X and Y-axis on the performance of the proposed MIMO antenna is also analyzed where decent performance is observed. This makes the proposed flexible four-element MIMO antenna a potential candidate to be deployed in future smartphones.

Abstract A compact four-element ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual polarization and dual-notched capabilities was developed and fabricated. The MIMO antenna is composed of four orthogonally placed half-cutting UWB antenna elements. This orthogonal placement improves the isolation. Furthermore, an L-shaped slot and a continuous bending slot are etched to realize the band-rejection function in the WiMAX and WLAN bands. The result shows that the antenna achieved operating bands of 2.9–16.5 GHz (140.2%, S11 < −10 dB), fully covering the UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). The port isolation is greater than 23 dB in the frequency band of interest, excluding two rejected bands. Moreover, the MIMO antenna has excellent diversity performance, such as a low envelope correlation coefficient (<0.004), high diversity gain (approximately 10 dB), and good omnidirectional radiation characteristics.

This paper presents a compact Multiple Input Multiple Output antenna with high isolation and low envelope correlation (ECC) for fifth-generation applications using spatial diversity technique. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two single antennas, each having size of 13 × 12.8 mm2, symmetrically arranged next to each other. The single and MIMO antennas are simulated and analyzed. To verify the simulated results, the prototype antennas were fabricated and measured. A good agreement between measurements and simulations is obtained. The proposed antenna covers the 28 GHz band (27.5–28.35 GHz) allocated by the FCC for 5G applications. Moreover, the isolation is more than 35 dB and the ECC is less than 0.0004 at the operating band, which means that the mutual coupling between the two elements is negligible. The MIMO parameters, such as diversity gain (DG), total active reflection coefficient (TARC), realized gain, and efficiency, are also studied. Thus, the results demonstrate that our antenna is suitable for 5G MIMO applications.

This paper presents a Low-profile slot meander patch antennas. The antenna is a multiple communication bands for handheld devices and implements multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) technique. The proposed model covers LTE band-11 1.5 GHz Lower (1427.9 - 1452.9, 1475.9 - 1500.9), LTE band-2 PCS 1900 (1930 -1990, 1850 -1910), LTE band-7 2.6 GHz (2620-2690, 2500- 2570), and LTE band-22 3.5 GHz (3510-3590, 3410-3490) with dB matching criterion (VSWR 3:1). An isolation less than -15 dB has been obtained between two typical slot meander patch antennas. The isolation is achieved as a result of using CPW feeding mechanism and inserted CLL network isolator. This dual-feed (2-elements) planar antenna is fabricated and measured. The result of this small size structured MIMO antenna system shows a good radiation characteristics and small mutual coupling which is promising for MIMO applications in compact portable devices.

An easy-to-manufacture and efficient four-port-printed Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna operating across an ultra-wideband (UWB) region (2.9–13.6 GHz) is proposed and investigated here. The phenomenon of the polarization diversity is used to improve the isolation between MIMO antenna elements by deploying four orthogonal antenna elements. The proposed printed antenna (40 × 40 × 1.524 mm3) is made compact by optimizing the circular-shaped radiating components via vertical stubs on top of the initial design to maximally reduce unwanted interaction while placing them together in proximity. The measurements of the prototype MIMO antennas corroborate the simulation performance. The findings are compared to the recent relevant works presented in the literature to show that the proposed antenna is suitable for UWB MIMO applications. The proposed printed UWB MIMO antenna could be a good fit for compact portable wireless electronic devices.

A design of low mutual coupling between two microstrip patch antennas for multi input multi output antenna is presented. The two antenna elements operate at 5.8 GHz for wireless applications. The reduction of mutual coupling between the antenna elements is achieved by using a defected ground structure (DGS). The DGS is inserted between the microstrip patch antenna elements to limit the surface waves between them. The separation between the edges of the two elements has been achieved to be only 0.058λ0. The analysis of the correlation coefficient, diversity gain and total active reflection coefficient is presented to validate the performance of the multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna. The isolation of the proposed MIMO antenna is 28 dB at 5.8 GHz and the envelope correlation equals 0.003. Owing to these good performances each antenna can operate almost independently. A good agreement is achieved between the simulated and the measured results.
