The present study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of honey (raspberry, mint, rape, sunflower, thyme and polyfloral) produced in Romania. The honey samples were from the 2017 to 2018 harvest and were subjected to melissopalynological analysis, alongside the determination of the following physicochemical parameters: moisture content, pH, free acidity, electrical conductivity (EC), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content, color, total polyphenols content (TPC), flavonoids content (FC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, phenolic acids, flavonols, sugars and organic acids in order to evaluate the usefulness of this parameters for the classification of honey according to botanical origin. The results of the melissopalynological analysis revealed that five types of honey samples had a percentage of pollen grains above the minimum of 45%, which was required in order to classify the samples as monofloral honey. The total polyphenols content reached the maximum value in the case of dark honey such as mint honey, followed by raspberry, thyme and polifloral honey. Fructose, glucose, maltose, sucrose, turanose, trehalose, melesitose, and raffinose were identified and quantified in all samples. Gluconic acid was the main organic acid in the composition of all honey samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the possibility of the botanical authentication of honey based on these physicochemical parameters.

The aim of this study seeks to investigate the presence of qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytoconstituents of the flower of the plant Nelumbo nucifera. The present study provides evidence that successive solvent extract of Nelumbo nucifera contains medicinally important bioactive compounds and this justifies the use of plant species as traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases. Maximum phenolic and flavanoid content was observed in ethanolic extract of Nelumbo nucifera. The DPPH scavenging potential of the ethanolic extracts of the herbs ranged from 33%-55%. In the present study analysis of free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic and flavonoid content showed that mainly the ethanolic extract of flower extract can be the potent source of natural antioxidants. Free radicals or reactive oxygen species are involved in various pharmacological conditions. As synthetic antioxidants possess numerous adverse health effects, the medicinal plants possessing antioxidant components can be used to prevent harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. In the present study leaves of Amaranthus tricolor Linn were used to prepare chloroform (CEAT), methanolic (MEAT) and aqueous (AEAT) extracts, analyze the presence of phytochemicals and evaluation of in-vitro antioxidant property. Quantitative determination of phenols, tannins and flavonoids in leaves A.tricolor was carried out using spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH, p-NDA radical scavenging methods for different extracts of the plant. The plant species showed that methanolic extract (MEAT) on higher concentration possess better antioxidant potential when compared with reference standard ascorbic acid. The plant extracts exhibited strong antioxidant DPPH radical scavenging activity with the IC50 values 290, 657, 830 and 130μg/ml of MEAT, CEAT, AEAT and ASA respectively. In scavenging hydroxyl radical by p-NDA method the MEAT showed maximum activity, CEAT showed moderate and AEAT showed minimum activity. The strongest antioxidant activity of MEAT could be due to the presence of flavonoids and phenols.

AbstractThe content of biologically active phenolic compounds (total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids) were determined using spectrophotometry in four wild Croatian species of Daphne L. in the family Thymelaeaceae (Daphne alpina, D. cneorum, D. laureola, and D. mezereum). The concentration of total flavonoids (TF) was highest in the leaves of these Daphne species (0.12–0.51% dry herb weight, DW) whereas the content of other phenolic compounds analyzed were highest in the roots, including total polyphenols (TP; 2.71–19.03% DW), tannins (T; 1.14–7.39% DW), and total phenolic acids (TPA; 0.12–0.87% DW). D. alpina contained the highest amount of polyphenols, with the exception of flavonoids, where maximum concentrations were found in D. laureola. We also examined the antioxidant activity of leaf, stem, and root extracts. All extracts analyzed demonstrated high free radical scavenging activity with the highest concentration in the leaf extracts of D. alpina. Leaf extracts of D. cneorum showed the highest antioxidant activity in a β-carotene bleaching assay.

Grape skins contain a plenty of different flavonoids, most of them revealing significant antioxidant properties. In this contribution, a complex study is presented of grape skin ethanol extracts, prepared from grape skins of two vine grape varieties, Svatovavřinecké (St. Laurent) and Alibernet. Extracts were prepared from two different amounts of lyophilised grape skin powders using the pressurised fluid extraction (PFE). The antioxidant activity of the extracts was tested by EPR spectroscopy in Fenton system generating reactive radicals (•OH, O<sub<sup>–</sup>•, •R) followed by spin trapping technique. In addition, radical scavenging activity of the extracts was assessed applying 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (•DPPH) free radical and 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) cation radical (ABTS•><sup>+></sup>) assays. Total phenolic content (TPC) of the individual extracts and their tristimulus colour values (CIE Lab) were evaluated, using an UV-VIS spectrophotometer. All the data obtained were subsequently correlated and discriminated, using the multivariate statistics, involving the canonical discriminant analysis, principal component analysis, and canonical correlation analysis. Results obtained indicated that PFE is a suitable extraction technique, only slightly influencing antioxidant ability as well as composition of the so-prepared extracts. The influence of extraction conditions on the entire monitored characteristics was insignificant.

In Indonesia, beras (Oryza sativa) has become the main ingredient in natural beauty products such as masks, scrubs, and cold powder. γ-oryzanol and phenolic compounds are the major components in beras that have many benefits, one of which as antioxidants. This study aims to determine the content of γ-oryzanol and total phenolic compounds in different beras cultivars in the area of Yogyakarta. The leveling was done by a TLC-densitometry method and Folin Ciocalteu. The results showed that the largest γ-oryzanol content found in red beras was 0.0843% by weight of the sample. The highest total phenolic content was found in red beras as much as 1.92% by weight of the sample. The antioxidants activity IC50 Red Beras is 0.591.

Portable and autonomous analytical instrumentation is becoming more important. Portable instrumentation can be designed via the miniaturization approach and this is a challenging task due to: (i) the limited battery power supply, (ii) a low number of mechanical and moving parts allowed in the design and (iii) susceptibility to changing environment and temperature fluctuations. In this work we describe the design of a light emitting diode (LED) based 3D printed miniaturized colorimeter (dimensions: 5 cm × 4 cm × 4.5 cm (length, width, height), weight less than 56 g). The colorimeter was optimized for determination of the total phenolic compound content, the total flavonoid content and radical scavenging activity. The designed instrument provides comparable results to those of a conventional desktop spectrophotometer existing on the market. The designed LED based miniaturized colorimeter has wireless communication capability. This work demonstrates that this instrument can be applied investigating real samples.

Germander (Teucrium, Lamiaceae) is a genus commonly used as a medicinal herb in the middle east. The aim of this study was to estimate total polyphenols and antioxidant activity of different extracts from two Syrian Teucrium species (Teucrium polium and Teucrium creticum). Total polyphenols content was measured using Folin-Ciocalteu assay and the antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro by DPPH assay (free radical scavenging activity against 1, 1 –diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). The total polyphenols content and antioxidant activity of T. creticum extracts were higher than T. polium ones. Phenols contents ranged from 16.388 to 105.672 mg GA E/ g dry weight extract. The extracts showed significant scavenging activity against DPPH, with IC50 values ranging between 0.195 and 0.710 mg/ml. The methanolic extracts show higher antioxidant activity from the two species. A good correlation between DPPH scavenging activities and contents of polyphenols was found. These results show that Syrian Teucrium species, especially T. creticum least Known among all, is a rich source of phenols and natural antioxidant compounds, that can be used as a natural food preservative.
