Background: This study aimed to specify the prevalence of sedentary behavior and depression and investigate the relationship between sedentary behavior and depression among college students majoring in design. Methods: A total of 480 undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in design were randomly enrolled from a university in Nanjing for a questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, physical health, sedentary behavior and depression. Results: Participants reported that they spent 14.93 (SD = 1.76) hours on sedentary behavior per day and most of the time occurred outside the classroom. There were 161 (39.8%) students who reported depression, with a statistical difference across grades. After adjusting for sociodemographic attributes, physical health and physical activity, binary logistic regression analysis showed that the total sedentary time and time spent on school assignments on weekends were significantly associated with depression. Conclusions: To reduce the risk of depression, students majoring in design should be encouraged to change sedentary behaviors to physical activities in their study and life, such as using non-seating postures to do school assignments, making time for more physical activities and reducing assignments on weekends.

College students exhibit high levels of sedentary time and/or poor lifestyle factors (e.g., poor sleep, stress, physical inactivity). It is unknown; however, in what domains college students spend their sedentary time and whether there are associations between sedentary time and these lifestyle factors. This study examined sedentary behavior of college students by domains, current lifestyle factors and sociodemographics. Undergraduates (n = 272, M age = 20 years, 79% female) self-reported their sedentary behavior, sleep, stress, physical activity, anthropometrics and sociodemographics. Sedentary time was categorized as: total, recreational screen, education and social. Students reported spending >12 h of their day sedentary on average, with over a third of this time spent in recreational screen time. All categories of sedentary time were significantly correlated with body mass index, and both total sedentary time and screen time were significantly correlated with sleep score, with poorer sleep quality associated with greater sedentary time. Physical activity was negatively correlated with social sedentary time only. Subgroups with elevated sedentary time included minority students, those with low parental education and students with overweight/obesity. Given the negative health impacts of sedentary behavior, college students would likely benefit from interventions tailored to this population which target reducing sedentary time, particularly recreational screen time.

Background: The study sought to assess the changes in physical activity (PA) and sedentary time among Chinese youths at different stages after the COVID-19 outbreak.Methods: It was based on a retrospective online survey conducted in May 2020. More than 10,000 youths voluntarily recalled their PA-related information at three stages: before COVID-19 (January), during lockdown (February), and after lockdown (May). χ2 tests were conducted to evaluate the significance of the differences in participants' characteristics between sexes, and Wilcoxon Rank Sum tests were performed to examine the significance of differences in changes in PA and sedentary behavior levels between sexes.Results: A total of 8,115 participants were included, with a mean age of 20. The percentage of no PA per week increased significantly and then slightly fell, and that of ≥150 min/week substantially decreased and then rebounded partially (all p < 0.001) (for instance, the percentage of ≥150 min/week of PA total decreased from 38.6 to 19.4%, then rebounded back to 25.3%). Means hours per day spent in sedentary behaviors had significantly increased during lockdown comparing to pre-COVID-19 (all p < 0.001). There were more participants reported reduced PA level than those indicated increased, and more participating youths had their sedentary behavior level increased than those who had it decreased.Conclusions: The study found COVID-19 had both immediate and longer-term impacts on self-reported physical activities and sedentary behaviors among Chinese youths. Relevant efforts should be strengthened to get youths physically moving again.

Background fMRI is being increasingly used as an adjunct imaging technique for preoperative planning for patients with various brain lesions. The proximity of the lesion to eloquent cortex is a major factor in guiding surgical planning. Our group has previously reported significant association between the distance between brain tumor periphery and area of fMRI activation (Lesion-Activation Distance; LAD) and morbidity and mortality outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between vascular lesion LAD and morbidity. Methods This study was a retrospective analysis of data from patients with vascular lesions [arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) (n=49), and cavernomas (n=57)], who had received fMRI as part of their preoperative planning. The preoperative fMRI included motor mapping (n=87) and/or language mapping (n=102). The fMRI paradigms were chosen based on observed preoperative weakness (aphasia, paresis) and anticipated functional areas of the brain that may be affected by treatment. Results Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that a model that combines Age and Language LAD was a significant predictor of postoperative deficits (p= 0.04). Broca’s LAD(1-2 cm) X Age was a significant predictor of postoperative deficits (change in odds ratio (OR) =0.82, CI:0.68-0.98). The relationship between Brocas’s LAD and postoperative aphasia and Broca’s LAD and pre and postoperative aphasia trended towards significance (p = .08 and p =.07 respectively). Wernicke’s LAD, independently or combined with Age, was not a significant predictor of postoperative deficits. Binary logistic regression analysis for SMC LAD and postop deficits did not reach significance (p =.10). There were no significant differences in postoperative language or motor deficits as a function of gender or handedness. Conclusions These results suggest that both age and the proximity of a vascular lesion to language LAD are factors that can help predict postoperative outcomes, especially for Broca’s LAD. The lack of similar results when investigating the relationship between Wernicke’s LAD and postoperative deficits suggests potential brain reorganization and/or robustness of this brain region. These results have implications for the potential use of fMRI as a presurgical tool for language mapping in patients with vascular lesions.

<b>Objective: </b>To prospectively analyze the association of sedentary behavior time with T2D risk and perform the iso-temporal substitution analyses to estimate the effect of substituting sedentary behaviors by equal time of different types of daily-life physical activities and structured exercise. We also examined modifications by the genetic predisposition to T2D. <p><b>Research Design and Methods: </b>We included 475,502 participants free of T2D in the UK Biobank. Sedentary time was quantified by summing up the time spent on television watching, computer using, and driving.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>During a median follow-up of 11 years, we documented 18,169 incident T2D. Comparing the extreme categories (≥6 vs. <2 hours/day), the hazard ratio (HR) for T2D was 1.58 (95% CI, 1.47-1.71), after adjustment for age, race, sex, lifestyle factors, and other covariates. Replacing 30 minutes of sedentary behavior per day with an equal time of different types of daily-life activities and structured exercise were significantly associated with a 6-31% risk reduction of T2D, with strenuous sports showing the strongest (31%, 95% CI, 24%-37%) benefit. Moreover, we found a significant interaction between sedentary behavior and genetic predisposition on the risk of T2D (p-interaction=0.0008). The association was more profound among participants with a lower genetic risk of T2D.</p> <p><b>Conclusions: </b>Our study indicates that sedentary behavior time is associated with an increased risk of T2D; replacing sedentary behavior with a short-duration (30 minutes/day) daily-life physical activities or structured exercise is related to a significant reduction in T2D risk. Furthermore, such association was stronger among those with a lower genetic risk of T2D.</p>

Purpose: The authors examined the relationship between mother and child activity. Methods: The authors compared moderate–vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time of low-income mothers with obesity and their 6- to 12-year-old children on week (WD) and weekend (WE) days. A total of 196 mother–child pairs wore accelerometers simultaneously for a week. Mothers completed questionnaires. Spearman correlation and multivariate regression were used. Results: WE MVPA (accelerometry) was significantly correlated between mothers with children aged 6–7 (rs = .35) and daughters (rs = .27). Self-reported maternal PA time spent with one of their children was significantly correlated with the WE MVPA of all children (rs = .21) and children aged 8–10 (rs = .22) and with the WD MVPA of all children (rs = .15), children aged 8–10 (rs = .23), aged 11–12 (rs = .52), and daughters (rs = .37), and inversely correlated to the WD sedentary time of all children (rs = −.21), children aged 8–10 (rs = −.30), aged 11–12 (rs = −.34), daughters (rs = −.26), and sons (rs = −.22). In multivariate regression, significant associations were identified between reported child–mother PA time together and child MVPA and sedentary time (accelerometry). Conclusions: Mothers may influence the PA levels of their children with the strongest associations found in children aged 6–7 and daughters. Mother–child coparticipation in PA may lead to increased child MVPA and decreased sedentary behavior.

Evidence suggests that more time spent in sedentary behaviors (SB) increases health risk independent of physical activities. Trends in SB among adults have not been fully described in China, and the sociodemographic correlates of SB have not been systematically evaluated either. This study examined the temporal trends of SB among 184,257 adults (2002: n = 52,697, 2010–2012: n = 131,560) using data from the China National Nutrition and Health Survey in 2002 and 2010–2012, and analyzed the recent correlates of SB in Chinese adults. Overall, an increase (+0.29 h/d) was seen in total SB across the survey years, and there was a slight increase (+0.14 h/d) in leisure time SB and a decrease (−0.39 h/d) in occupational SB. From 2002 to 2012, the proportion of Chinese adults whose total SB time over 4 h/d increased from 35.4% to 43.0%, and the proportion of leisure SB time over 3 h/d increased from 42.0% to 48.0%, and the proportion of occupational SB time over 4 h/d decreased from 63.4% to 53.0%. Male, urban areas, employed, unmarried, and with higher educational and family economic level were all positively associated with high sedentary time (HST) in 2010–2012. These trends and correlates are important for health policy in China and other countries that are facing similar challenges.

Background. Sedentary behavior is a growing public health concern and may have particular relevance for the Parkinson disease (PD) population. However, the influence of sedentary time on factors associated with quality of life (QOL) in PD is unknown. The primary purpose of this study was to examine relationships between sedentary behaviors and markers of PD-specific QOL. A secondary purpose was to examine relationships between physical activity behaviors and QOL. Methods. We assessed sedentary and active behaviors using objective and interview measures and examined relationships between these behaviors and a measure of PD-specific QOL in individuals with PD. Results. Results demonstrated that sedentary time was significantly related to several aspects of QOL, including perceived deficits in the domains of mobility, cognitive processing, and communication. Additionally, results showed that time spent watching television was more strongly associated with lower levels of QOL than other more engaging sedentary activities. For physical activity, relationships between objective measures and QOL were weaker and only significantly associated with mobility. Time spent doing housework was associated with lower levels of QOL, whereas time spent in recreational activity was associated with lower levels of discomfort. Discussion. These results suggest that targeting decreases in sedentary behaviors (eg, reducing time spent watching television, breaking up prolonged bouts of sedentary time) may be effective for improving QOL in individuals with PD.

There is limited evidence for the associations of area-level crime with older adults’ physical activity and sedentary behavior, especially in Asia. This study explored the association of area-level crime with older adults’ active and sedentary behavior. A telephone-based survey of Taiwanese seniors was conducted in September–November of 2017. Data related to sociodemographic factors, residential neighborhood (objectively recorded area-level crime incidence), and time spent in physical activity and sedentary behavior, were obtained from 1068 older adults. Adjusted binary logistic regression was analyzed. Fully adjusted analyses showed older adults living in neighborhoods with a higher incidence of drug crime (odds ratio, OR = 0.71, 95% confidence interval, CI = 0.52–0.96), car theft (OR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.51–0.95), and locomotive theft (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.51–0.94) were found to be less likely to achieve the recommendation on physical activity. In addition, those living in neighborhoods with a higher incidence of theft (OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.05–3.55), drug crime (OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.05–3.55), breaking and entering (OR = 2.04, 95% CI 1.11–3.76), and rape (OR = 2.20, 95% CI 1.20–4.06) were more likely to have more sedentary time. There were sex differences in the association of area-level crime incidence with physical activity and sedentary behavior. These findings suggest that crime prevention should be considered when designing physical activity and sedentary behavior interventions for older adults.

Objective This study aims to explore the relationship between sedentary behavior and the diabetes mellitus prevalence of middle-aged and elderly people. Methods  we conduct a questionnaire survey and physical examination for a total of 3,000 middle-aged and elderly people (≥45 years old) ,analysing by he software of  SPSS21.0 and Stata12.0. Results The logistic regression analysis shows that the risk of diabetes is 1.617 (95% CI, 0.762-1.789, P <0.05) at 2-4h, 4-6h, 6-8h, ≥8h, = 0.003), 1.235 (95% CI, 0.818-1.865, P = 0.034), 3.420 (95% CI, 2.241-5.218, P = 0.000), 5.014 (95% CI, 3.049-8.247, P = 0.000). With each additional one-hour sedentariness the risk of diabetes increases by 23% (OR1.23, 95% CI 1.18-1.29, p <0.0001). Conclusions The sedentary behavior is an independent risk factor for diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes is gradually increasing with the increase of sedentary time, which indicates the longer sedentary time, the higher prevalence of diabetes.
