This study examines the relationship between social skills and happiness in 1st-year Teaching School students, as well as possible gender differences. The sample comprised 243 Teaching School students (Primary Education) in Zaragoza, including 110 men (45.27%) and 133 women (54.73%), aged 18–25 (average age 20.23 years; s.d. = 1.586). In order to analyse the relationship between social skills and subjective happiness, the Scale of Social Skills and Subjective Happiness Scale were used. While men scored higher in all social skills-related factors, women scored higher in all factors related to happiness. The study shows that factors such as self-expression in social settings and the ability to say no and cut off social interactions have a direct and significant effect on happiness among men, while self-expression in social settings and the ability to express anger led to a higher perception of happiness among women. Similarly, situations such as asking for and defending rights have an indirect and significant effect in men, reducing their levels of happiness. In the case of women, no social skills factors were found that led to lower happiness. It may be concluded that significant gender differences exist, although broader and lateral studies are needed in order to examine the relationship between gender identities, social skills and subjective happiness more in depth, and thus, understand the effect of these constructs in the development of personality.

Abstract Background Happiness, a subjective judgment about one’s quality of life, is influenced by environmental factors and should be considered as an important goal of medical education, which should support each learner’s development as a person as well as a professional. However, although several studies have reported on the correlation between Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) scores and students’ academic achievement, few have investigated the relationship between DREEM scores and students’ subjective happiness. This study examined different perceptions of the educational environment between phases of the curriculum and determined which DREEM subscales affect the overall level of happiness. Methods We used the Korean version of the DREEM questionnaire and a single item measure of happiness on a scale of 0 to 10. First we analyzed student perceptions of the educational environment according to their demographic characteristics using independent sample t-tests and one-way analysis of variance. A multiple regression analysis was performed to reveal which subscales affect the overall level of happiness while controlling for grade point average (GPA) and other demographic characteristics. Results The subjects were 239 medical school students across all stages of the curriculum. The students’ overall perception was more positive for the educational environment during Phase 3 (clerkship) than Phase 1 (pre-medical). Among the DREEM subscales, this difference was especially prominent in Students’ Perception of Learning and Students’ Academic Self-Perceptions. In contrast, no difference in the subjective perception of happiness was found between phases. The effect of GPA on happiness became insignificant under the control of other variables, but the influence of the Students’ Social Self-Perceptions (SSSP) subscale remained significant. Conclusions The students’ overall perception of the educational environment was more positive during the clerkship period than in the pre-medical period. Based on our finding that the SSSP correlates significantly with subjective happiness, we suggest that institutions promote not only students’ academic development but also their happiness by fostering an appropriate educational environment.

The research aims to know the level of depression and identity crisis among high school students of Koisnjaq city and to know the relationship between them as well as to clarify the impact of gender differences on them. To achieve this, a hundred students participated randomly. To collect data, the research adopted the two measures of identity and depression crisis. The validity and reliability of both scales were at a satisfactory level. After collecting and analyzing the information using the statistical package for social sciences (spss), the results showed that the level of depression on its edge as a clinical disease, and that the participants suffer from a certain level of identity crisis, and the results did not show any statistically significant relationship between the level of depression and the identity crisis. Finally, gender differences did not appear to be statistically significant for both depression and identity crisis.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between happiness and network of social relationships. Network of relationships inventory-relationship quality version (Furman and Buhrmester, 1985) and subjective happiness scale (Lyubomirsky and Lepper, 1999) was administered on 100 undergraduate college students at Gangtok, Sikkim within age range of 17 to 23 years. Pearson's correlation showed that happiness was significantly positively related with companionship, approval and satisfaction with opposite-gender best-friends, emotional support of mother, satisfaction with same-gender best-friends and siblings. However, happiness was found to be negatively correlated with criticism and pressure of girl/boy friend, criticism of mother and siblings, dominance of father, and exclusion of best friends (same/opposite gender), girl/boy friend, siblings, mother and father.

AbstractThe present study aimed to investigate the relationships among bully victimisation and psychosocial health in terms of depression, anxiety, social problems, and perceived wellness. The study also endeavoured to evaluate the gender differences associated with each of these psychosociol variables across varying levels of victimisation. The sample consisted of 180 female and 198 male secondary school students, who each completed a questionnaire package containing scales measuring bully victimisation and psychosocial health. Results indicated that repeated victimisation was associated with heightened levels of depression and anxiety, a greater incidence of social problems, and poorer perceptions of wellbeing. However, being bullied had a greater impact on the perceived wellness of males when compared with females. The results also revealed that social problems may mediate the relationship between depression, perceived wellness, and level of victimisation. It was concluded that bully victimisation is associated with poorer psychosacial health in both male and female adolescents. However, future research should evaluate other potential mediating or moderating relationships between bully victimisation and psychosocial health.

This study examined the mediating effects of Facebook® addiction on the relationship between subjective vitality and subjective happiness. 297 university students (157 women, 140 men; M age = 20.1 yr., SD = 1.3) were administered the Facebook® Addiction Scale, the Subjective Vitality Scale, and the Subjective Happiness Scale. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that Facebook® addiction partially mediated the relationship between subjective vitality and subjective happiness.

This study examined how humor styles could mediate the effect of self-esteem on subjective happiness. 227 Hong Kong undergraduate students completed the Humor Styles Questionnaire, the Roxsenberg Self-esteem Scale, and the Subjective Happiness Scale. Results showed adaptive humor styles (affiliative humor and self-enhancing humor) significantly predicted self-esteem and subjective happiness and mediated the relationship between self-esteem and subjective happiness. Maladaptive humor styles (aggressive humor and self-defeating humor) did not strongly predict self-esteem or subjective happiness. The mediation effects of humor styles found in the present research provided useful suggestions for future studies.
