To improve the anti-explosion performance of blast wall in offshore platforms, an auxetic re-entrant blast wall (ARBW) was proposed and designed based on the indentation resistance effect of an auxetic structure. Based on the numerical nonlinear dynamic analysis method verified by the explosion experiment of a conventional steel corrugated blast wall (CBW), the failure mechanisms of ARBW, steel honeycomb sandwich blast wall (HSBW) and CBW were investigated under distributed impulse loads. Computational results demonstrated the excellent anti-explosion performance of the proposed ARBW design. Concerning the minimal deformation at the mid-point of the proposed protective structures, the ARBW performed best. As regards the minimal deformation at the connection, both ARBW and HSBW worked well. The stress distribution of the connection illustrated the different energy absorption and transmission modes of the three blast walls.

Analytical formulation for the evaluation of frequency of CFRP sandwich beam with debond, following the split beam theory, generally underestimates the stiffness, as the contact between the honeycomb core and the skin during vibration is not considered in the region of debond. The validation of the present analytical solution for multiple-debond size is established through 3D finite element analysis, wherein geometry of honeycomb core is modeled as it is, with contact element introduced in the debond region. Nonlinear transient analysis is followed by fast Fourier transform analysis to obtain the frequency response functions. Frequencies are obtained for two types of model having single debond and double debond, at different spacing between them, with debond size up to 40% of beam length. The analytical solution is validated for a debond length of 15% of the beam length, and with the presence of two debonds of same size, the reduction in frequency with respect to that of an intact beam is the same as that of a single-debond case, when the debonds are well separated by three times the size of debond. It is also observed that a single long debond can result in significant reduction in the frequencies of the beam than multiple debond of comparable length.

The aim of this paper was to investigate bending responses of sandwich panels with aluminium honeycomb core and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) skins used in electric vehicle body subjected to quasistatic bending. The typical load-displacement curves, failure modes, and energy absorption are studied. The effects of fibre direction, stacking sequence, layer thickness, and loading velocity on the crashworthiness characteristics are discussed. The finite element analysis (FEA) results are compared with experimental measurements. It is observed that there are good agreements between the FEA and experimental results. Numerical simulations and experiment predict that the honeycomb sandwich panels with ±30° and ±45° fibre direction, asymmetrical stacking sequence (45°/−45°/45°/−45°), thicker panels (0.2 mm∼0.4 mm), and smaller loading velocity (5 mm/min∼30 mm/min) have better crashworthiness performance. The FEA prediction is also helpful in understanding the initiation and propagation of cracks within the honeycomb sandwich panels.

Theoretical formulas for effective elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of honeycomb core materials were proposed considering the bending, axial and shear deformations of cell walls. Theoretical results obtained by the formulas showed orthotropic elasticity and large Poisson’s ratio, which were comparable to results by finite element analysis(FEA). Tensile test of honeycomb sandwich composite(HSC) plates was performed for analysis of their deformation behaviors and interlaminar stresses. Equivalent plate model using the theoretical results of honeycomb core layer show that interlaminar shear stress occurring due to large difference of Poisson’s ratio between skin and honeycomb core layers led to the delamination in HSC plate under tensile loading. Load-displacement behavior of HSC specimen simulated by equivalent plate model coincided fairly with that of detailed FEA model similar to experimental results.

The dynamic responses of honeycomb sandwich panels (HSPs) subjected to in-plane projectile impact were studied by means of explicit nonlinear finite element simulations using LS-DYNA. The HSPs consisted of two identical aluminum alloy face-sheets and an aluminum honeycomb core featuring three types of unit cell configurations (regular, rectangular-shaped, and reentrant hexagons). The ballistic resistances of HSPs with the three core configurations were first analyzed. It was found that the HSP with the reentrant auxetic honeycomb core has the best ballistic resistance, due to the negative Poisson’s ratio effect of the core. Parametric studies were then carried out to clarify the influences of both macroscopic (face-sheet and core thicknesses, core relative density) and mesoscopic (unit cell angle and size) parameters on the ballistic responses of the auxetic HSPs. Numerical results show that the perforation resistant capabilities of the auxetic HSPs increase as the values of the macroscopic parameters increase. However, the mesoscopic parameters show nonmonotonic effects on the panels' ballistic capacities. The empirical equations for projectile residual velocities were formulated in terms of impact velocity and the structural parameters. It was also found that the blunter projectiles result in higher ballistic limits of the auxetic HSPs.

This paper presents an investigation on the mechanical response of the Nomex honeycomb core subjected to flatwise compressive loading. Thin plate elastic in-plane compressive buckling theory is used to analyze the Nomex honeycomb core cell wall. A mesoscopic finite element (FE) model of honeycomb sandwich structure with the Nomex honeycomb cell walls is established by employing ABAQUS/Explicit shell elements. The compressive strength and compressive stiffness of Nomex honeycomb core with different heights and thickness of cell walls, i.e. double cell walls and single cell walls, are analyzed numerically using the FE model. Flatwise compressive tests are also carried out on bare honeycomb cores to validate the numerical method. The results suggest that the compressive strength and compression stiffness are related to the geometric dimensions of the honeycomb core. The Nomex honeycomb core with a height of 6 mm has a higher strength than that of 8 mm. In addition, the honeycomb core with lower height possesses stronger anti-instability ability, including the compressive strength and stiffness. The proposed mesoscopic model can effectively simulate the crushing process of Nomex honeycomb core and accurately predict the strength and stiffness of honeycomb sandwich panels. Our work is instructive to the practical applications in engineering.

The present work focuses on the in-plane shear respond and failure mode of large size honeycomb sandwich composites which consist of plain weave carbon fabric laminate skins and aramid paper core. A special size specimen based on a typical element of aircraft fuselage was designed and manufactured. A modified in-plane shear test method and the corresponding fixture was developed. Three large size specimens were tested. The distributed strain gauges were used to monitor the mechanical response and ultimate bearing capacity. The results show that a linear respond of displacement and strain appears with the increase of the load. The average shear failure load reaches 205.68 kN with the shear failure occurring on the face sheet, and the maximum shear strain monitored on the composite plate is up to 16,115 με. A combination of theoretical analysis and finite element method (FEM) was conducted to predict the shear field distribution and the overall buckling load. The out-of-plane displacement field distribution and in-plane shear strain field distribution under the pure shear loading were revealed. The theoretical analysis method was deduced to obtain the variation rule of the shear buckling load. A good agreement was achieved among the experiment, theoretical analysis, and FEM results. It can be concluded that the theoretical analysis method is relatively conservative, and the FEM is more accurate in case of deformation and strain. The results predicted by h element and p element methods are very close. The results of the study could provide data support for the comprehensive promotion of the design and application of honeycomb sandwich composites.
