The influence of the working load on the dynamic loading of the bolt was investigated in our study for two cases of flange joints. The analytical calculation according to the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) 2230 recommendation and the numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) were performed for a model of a four-bolt joint. To verify the FEM analysis, the forces in the bolts were measured during preloading and during the application of the working load on the test rig. Based on the analytical and numerical results, the influence of the working load application point on the bolt load and its fatigue life was analysed for different cases. Comparison of the results shows that the analytical method overestimates the additional bolt stresses at low working load, mainly due to the extremely large fraction of bending stress. As the working load increases, the differences between the two methods decrease, but only for the reason that the analytical method can only linearly scale the overestimated results at lower working load, and FEM analysis, on the other hand, shows a progressive increase of the additional stress in the bolt at higher working loads due to the spreading of the flange. It is also shown that a high washer significantly increases the fatigue life of the bolt for two reasons: (i) a high washer reduces the additional stress in the bolt, and (ii) the high washer shifts the critical fatigue point from the thread area to the transition of the bolt shank to the head.

This paper presented a novel analytical method for calculating magnetic field in the slotted air gap of spoke-type permanent-magnet machines using conformal mapping. Firstly, flux density without slots and complex relative air-gap permeance of slotted air gap are derived from conformal transformation separately. Secondly, they are combined in order to obtain normalized flux density taking account into the slots effect. The finite element (FE) results confirmed the validity of the analytical method for predicting magnetic field and back electromotive force (BEMF) in the slotted air gap of spoke-type permanent-magnet machines. In comparison with FE result, the analytical solution yields higher peak value of cogging torque.

Airworthiness standards of Korea recommend verifying structural safety by experimental tests and analytical methods, owing to the development of analysis technology. In this study, we propose a methodology to verify the structural safety of aircraft components based on airworthiness requirements using an analytical method. The structural safety and fatigue integrity of a linear actuator for flap control of aircraft was evaluated through numerical analysis. The static and fatigue analyses for the given loads obtained from the multibody dynamics analysis were performed using the finite element method. Subsequently, the margin of safety and vulnerable area were acquired and the feasibility of the structural safety evaluation using the analytical method was confirmed. The proposed numerical analysis method in this study can be adopted as an analytical verification methodology for the airworthiness standards of civilian aircraft in Korea.

Review of technical literature regarding to train-induced vibrations shows that the effects of unsupported railway sleepers on this issue have been less investigated. So, the present study was devoted to numerical investigations of the mentioned issue. In this regard, first the problem of longitudinal train–track dynamic interaction was simulated in two dimensions by using the finite element method and the developed model was validated through comparison of the results with those obtained by previous researchers. In the next stage, a series of sensitivity analyses were accomplished to account for the effects of value of gap beneath the unsupported sleeper(s) and the track support stiffness on increasing the sleeper displacement and track support force. Moreover, the raised sleeper support force was introduced as applied load to a two-dimensional plane strain finite element model of track in lateral section and consequently the train-induced vibrations were assessed. As a result, a series of regression equations were established between the peak particle velocity in the surrounding environment of railway track and the sleeper support stiffness for tracks without unsupported sleepers and with one and two unsupported sleepers.

Crucial factors in window performance, such as natural ventilation and noise control, are generally conceived separately, forcing users to choose one over the other. To solve this dualism, this study aimed to develop an acoustic metamaterial (AMM) ergonomic window design to allow noise control without dependence on the natural ventilation duration and vice versa. First, the finite element method (FEM) was used to investigate the noise control performance of the acoustic metawindow (AMW) unit, followed by anechoic chamber testing, which also served as the validation of the FEM models. Furthermore, FEM analysis was used to optimise the acoustic performance and assess the ventilation potential. The numerical and experimental results exhibited an overall mean sound reduction of 15 dB within a bandwidth of 380 to 5000 Hz. A good agreement between the measured and numerical results was obtained, with a mean variation of 30%. Therefore, the AMW unit optimised acoustic performance, resulting in a higher noise reduction, especially from 50 to 500 Hz. Finally, most of the AMW unit configurations are suitable for natural ventilation, and a dynamic tuned ventilation capacity can be achieved for particular ranges by adjusting the window’s ventilation opening. The proposed designs have potential applications in building acoustics and engineering where natural ventilation and noise mitigation are required to meet regulations simultaneously.

Abstract API RP 1102 provides a method to calculate stresses in buried pipelines due to surface loads resulting from the encroachment of roads and railroads. The API RP 1102 approach is commonly used in the industry, and widely available software allows for quick and easy implementation. However, the approach has several limitations on when it can be used, one of which is that it is limited to pipelines crossing as near to 90° (perpendicular crossing) as practicable. In no case can the crossing be less than 30° . In this paper, the stresses in the buried pipeline under standard highway vehicular loading calculated using the API RP 1102 method are compared with the results of two other methods; an analytical method that accounts for longitudinal and circumferential through wall bending effects, and the finite element method. The benefit of the alternate analytical method is that it is not subject to the limitations of API RP 1102 on crossing alignment or depth. However, this method is still subject to the limitation that the pipeline is straight and at a uniform depth. The fact that it is analytical in nature allows for rapid assessment of a number of pipes and load configurations. The finite element analysis using a 3D soil box approach offers the greatest flexibility in that pipes with bends or appurtenances can be assessed. However, this approach is time consuming and difficult to apply to multiple loading scenarios. Pipeline crossings between 0° (parallel) and 90° (perpendicular) are evaluated in the assessment reported here, even though these are beyond the scope of API RP 1102. A comparison across the three methods will provide a means to evaluate the level of conservatism, if any, in the API RP 1102 calculation for crossing between 30° and 90° . It also provides a rationale to evaluate whether the API RP 1102 calculation can potentially be extended for 0° (parallel) crossings.

Abstract Uni-lateral and bi-lateral elastic-plastic compressions of a circular cylinder with three different wall thicknesses by flat plates are numerically analysed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). J2-flow theory (J2F), and J2-Gotoh’s corner theory (J2G) which was previously proposed by one of the authors are used as the constitutive equations. In the case of uni-lateral compression, the cylinder is compressed up to a completely flattened shape, which is considered a kind of plastic forming processes. The deformed shapes and the compressive force are predicted better by J2G than by J2F. The spring-back behaviours are also analysed by imposing unloading process during deformation. The deformation process in the compression of a ring (plane stress state) and a spherical shell (axi-symmetric state) is also analysed. In the case of bi-lateral compression, the process is considered a kind of square-tube forming. In its final stage, the cylinder deforms into a completely unexpected shape which could be thought of as a square tube reinforced with ribs. The J2G allows the process to proceed at a lower compressive force than that for J2F. The effect of n-value (the strain-hardedning exponent) on the deformation pattern is also discussed.

The purpose of the work is to compare two calculation methods using the example of solving the axisymmetric thermoelasticity problem. The calculation of a thick-walled cylindrical three-layer shell on the temperature effect was carried out by the numerical-analytical method and the finite element method implemented in the LIRA-CAD software package. In the calculation, a piecewise linear inhomogeneity of the shell due to its three-layer structure and continuous inhomogeneity caused by the influence of a stationary temperature field is taken into account. The numerical-analytical method of calculation involves the derivation of a resolving differential equation, which is solved by the sweep method, it is possible to take into account the nonlinear nature of the deformation of the material using the method of successive approximations. To solve this problem by the finite element method, a similar computational model of the shell was constructed in the LIRA-CAD software package. The solution of the problem of thermoelasticity for an infinite cylinder (under conditions of a plane deformed state) and for a cylinder of finite length with free ends is given. Comparison of the calculation results is carried out according to the obtained values of ring stresses.

Cold expansion technology is an extended method used in aeronautics to increase fatigue life of holes and hence extending inspection intervals. During the cold expansion process, a mechanical mandrel is forced to pass along the hole generating compressive residual hoop stresses. The most widely accepted geometry for this mandrel is the tapered one and simpler options like balls have generally been rejected based on the non-conforming residual hoop stresses derived from their use. In this investigation a novelty process using multiple balls with incremental interference, instead of a single one, was simulated. Experimental tests were performed to validate the finite element method (FEM) models and residual hoop stresses from multiple balls simulation were compared with one ball and tapered mandrel simulations. Results showed that the use of three incremental balls significantly reduced the magnitude of non-conforming residual hoop stresses and the extension of these detrimental zone.
