In this paper, the effects of asymmetrically modulated charged surfaces on streaming potential, velocity field and flow rate are investigated under the axial pressure gradient and vertical magnetic field. In a parallel-plate microchannel, modulated charged potentials on the walls are depicted by the cosine function. The flow of incompressible Newtonian fluid is two-dimensional due to the modulated charged surfaces. Considering the Debye–Hückel approximation, the Poisson–Boltzmann (PB) equation and the modified Navier–Stokes (N-S) equation are established. The analytical solutions of the potential and velocities (u and v) are obtained by means of the superposition principle and stream function. The unknown streaming potential is determined by the condition that the net ionic current is zero. Finally, the influences of pertinent dimensionless parameters (modulated potential parameters, Hartmann number and slip length) on the flow field, streaming potential, velocity field and flow rate are discussed graphically. During the flow process and under the impact of the charge-modulated potentials, the velocity profiles present an oscillating characteristic, and vortexes are generated. The results show that the charge-modulated potentials are beneficial for the enhancement of the streaming potential, velocity and flow rate, which also facilitate the mixing of fluids. Meanwhile, the flow rate can be controlled through the use of a low-amplitude magnetic field.

This article is focused on Maxwell ferromagnetic fluid and heat transport characteristics under the impact of magnetic field generated due to dipole field. The viscous dissipation and heat generation/absorption are also taken into account. Flow here is instigated by linearly stretchable surface, which is assumed to be permeable. Also description of magneto-thermo-mechanical (ferrohydrodynamic) interaction elaborates the fluid motion as compared to hydrodynamic case. Problem is modeled using continuity, momentum and heat transport equation. To implement the numerical procedure, firstly we transform the partial differential equations (PDEs) into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by applying similarity approach, secondly resulting boundary value problem (BVP) is transformed into an initial value problem (IVP). Then resulting set of non-linear differentials equations is solved computationally with the aid of Runge–Kutta scheme with shooting algorithm using MATLAB. The flow situation is carried out by considering the influence of pertinent parameters namely ferro-hydrodynamic interaction parameter, Maxwell parameter, suction/injection and viscous dissipation on flow velocity field, temperature field, friction factor and heat transfer rate are deliberated via graphs. The present numerical values are associated with those available previously in the open literature for Newtonian fluid case (γ 1 = 0) to check the validity of the solution. It is inferred that interaction of magneto-thermo-mechanical is to slow down the fluid motion. We also witnessed that by considering the Maxwell and ferrohydrodynamic parameter there is decrement in velocity field whereas opposite behavior is noted for temperature field.

This paper reports a theoretical study on the magnetohydrodynamic flow and heat exchange of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based nanoliquid over a variable thicker surface. Two types of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are accounted for saturation in base fluid. Particularly, the single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, best known as SWCNTs and MWCNTs, are used. Kerosene oil is taken as the base fluid for the suspension of nanoparticles. The model involves the impact of the thermal radiation and induced magnetic field. However, a tiny Reynolds number is assumed to ignore the magnetic induction. The system of nonlinear equations is obtained by reasonably adjusted transformations. The analytic solution is obtained by utilizing a notable procedure called optimal homotopy analysis technique (O-HAM). The impact of prominent parameters, such as the magnetic field parameter, Brownian diffusion, Thermophoresis, and others, on the dimensionless velocity field and thermal distribution is reported graphically. A comprehensive discussion is given after each graph that summarizes the influence of the respective parameters on the flow profiles. The behavior of the friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer (Nusselt number) at the surface (y = 0) are given at the end of the text in tabular form. Some existing solutions of the specific cases have been checked as the special case of the solution acquired here. The results indicate that MWCNTs cause enhancement in the velocity field compared with SWCNTs when there is an increment in nanoparticle volume fraction. Furthermore, the temperature profile rises with an increment in radiation estimator for both SWCNT and MWCNT and, finally, the heat transfer rate lessens for increments in the magnetic parameter for both types of nanotubes.

Objectives: To evaluate urinary symptoms and quality of life in patient with BPH before and after TURP. To determine the impact of TURP on the urinary symptoms (IPSS) and peak urinary flow rate. Methods: This study is prospective study carried out between 2010 and 2011 in the department of Urology, National Institute of Kidney Diseases & Urology. Total 102 cases were selected purposively according to selection criteria. Each patient was observed and followed up at 8 weeks (1st visit), 16 weeks (2nd visit) 24 weeks (3rd visit) after transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). IPSS score, QOL score also recorded and uroflowmetry was done to see the peak urinary flow rate (Qmax) of urine and voiding time. USG was done to see post voidal residual urine volume and DRE also done in selected cases. Data was complied and statistical analysis were done using computer based software, Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), using paired ‘t’ test. A P value <0.05 was taken as significance. Results: Before TURP, IPSS range 17-25 and mean 21.61+2.43, after TURP, range 0-7 and mean 4.27+1.71). Hence a significant improvement of IPSS was found from 2 months to 6 months follow up after TURP. The change was tested using “paired student ‘t’ test”. Before TURP Qmax range 7-12.2 and mean was 9.96+1.69, which became range 18-25 and mean was 22.61+2.28 after TURP and therefore change of mean Qmax was 12.64+2.69. The change was tested using “paired student ‘t’ test”. The change was found significant (P<0.001). The work purpose is the investigation of magnetic field impact upon properties of friction steel surfaces at fit stripping with tightness through manifested effects and their wear visually observed. On the spots of a real contact the magnetic field increases active centers, their amount and saturation with the time of dislocation outlet, and has an influence upon tribo-mating. The external electro-magnetic field promotes the increase of the number of active centers at the expense of dislocations outlet on the contact surface, and the increase of a physical contact area results in friction tie strengthening and growth of a friction factor. By the example of friction pairs of a spentonly unit in the suspension of coach cars there is given a substantiation of actuality and possibility for the creation of technical devices with the controlled factor of friction and the stability of effects achieved is also confirmed experimentally. Investigation methods: the fulfillment of laboratory physical experiments on the laboratory plant developed and patented on bush-rod samples inserted with the fit and tightness. The results of investigations and novelty: the impact of the magnetic field upon the value of a stripping force of a press fit with the guaranteed tightness is defined. Conclusion: there is a possibility to control a friction factor through the magnetic field impact upon a friction contact.

Timber roof constructions are commonly ventilated through an air cavity beneath the roof sheathing in order to remove heat and moisture from the construction. The driving forces for this ventilation are wind pressure and thermal buoyancy. The wind driven ventilation has been studied extensively, while models for predicting buoyant flow are less developed. In the present study, a novel analytical model is presented to predict the air flow caused by thermal buoyancy in a ventilated roof construction. The model provides means to calculate the cavity Rayleigh number for the roof construction, which is then correlated with the air flow rate. The model predictions are compared to the results of an experimental and a numerical study examining the effect of different cavity designs and inclinations on the air flow rate in a ventilated roof subjected to varying heat loads. Over 80 different test set-ups, the analytical model was found to replicate both experimental and numerical results within an acceptable margin. The effect of an increased total roof height, air cavity height and solar heat load for a given construction is an increased air flow rate through the air cavity. On average, the analytical model predicts a 3% higher air flow rate than found in the numerical study, and a 20% lower air flow rate than found in the experimental study, for comparable test set-ups. The model provided can be used to predict the air flow rate in cavities of varying design, and to quantify the impact of suggested roof design changes. The result can be used as a basis for estimating the moisture safety of a roof construction.

The sensation of phantom motion or exhibition of bodily sway is often reported in the proximity of an MR scanner. It is proposed that the magnetic field stimulates the vestibular system. There are a number of possible mechanisms responsible, and the relative contributions of susceptibility on the otolithic receptors and the Lorentz force on the cupulae have not yet been explored. This exploratory study aims to investigate the impact of being in the proximity of a 7.0 T MR scanner. The modified clinical test of sensory interaction on balance (mCTSIB) was used to qualitatively ascertain whether or not healthy control subjects who passed the mCTSIB in normal conditions 1) experienced subjective sensations of dizziness, vertigo or of leaning or shifting in gravity when in the magnetic field and 2) exhibited visibly increased bodily sway whilst in the magnetic field compared to outside the magnetic field. Condition IV of the mCTSIB was video recorded outside and inside the magnetic field, providing a semi-quantitative measure of sway. For condition IV of the mCTSIB (visual and proprioceptive cues compromised), all seven locations/orientations around the scanner yielded significantly more sway than at baseline (p < 0.01 FDR). A Student’s t-test comparing the RMS velocity of a motion marker on the upper arm during mCTSIB condition IV showed a significant increase in the amount of motion exhibited in the field (T = 2.59; d.f. = 9; p = 0.029) compared to outside the field. This initial study using qualitative measures of sway demonstrates that there is evidence for MR-naïve individuals exhibiting greater sway while performing the mCTSIB in the magnetic field compared to outside the field. Directional polarity of sway was not significant. Future studies of vestibular stimulation by magnetic fields would benefit from the development of a sensitive, objective measure of balance function, which can be performed inside a magnetic field.

We carry out the effect of the induced magnetic field on peristaltic transport of an incompressible conducting micropolar fluid in a symmetric channel. The flow analysis has been developed for low Reynolds number and long wavelength approximation. Exact solutions have been established for the axial velocity, microrotation component, stream function, magnetic-force function, axial-induced magnetic field, and current distribution across the channel. Expressions for the shear stresses are also obtained. The effects of pertinent parameters on the pressure rise per wavelength are investigated by means of numerical integrations, also we study the effect of these parameters on the axial pressure gradient, axial-induced magnetic field, as well as current distribution across the channel and the nonsymmetric shear stresses. The phenomena of trapping and magnetic-force lines are further discussed.

Abstract Abstract On the basis of the influence of dry season on ship traffic flow, the gathering and dissipating process of ship traffic flow was researched with Greenshields linear flow—density relationship model, the intrinsic relationship between the ship traffic congestion state and traffic wave in the unclosed restricted channel segment was emphatically explored when the ship traffic flow in a tributary channel inflows, and the influence law of multiple traffic waves on the ship traffic flow characteristics in unclosed restricted segment is revealed. On this basis, the expressions of traffic wave speed and direction, dissipation time of queued ships and the number of ships affected were provided, and combined with Monte Carlo method, the ship traffic flow simulation model in the restricted channel segment was built. The simulation results show that in closed restricted channel segment the dissipation time of ships queued is mainly related to the ship traffic flow rate of segments A and C, and the total number of ships affected to the ship traffic flow rate of segment A. And in unclosed restricted channel segment, the dissipation time and the total number of ships affected are also determined by the meeting time of the traffic waves in addition to the ship traffic flow rate of segments. The research results can provide the theoretical support for further studying the ship traffic flow in unclosed restricted channel segment with multiple tributaries Article Highlights The inflow of tributaries' ship traffic flows has an obvious impact on the traffic conditions in the unenclosed restricted channel segment. The interaction and influence between multiple ship traffic waves and the mechanism of generating new traffic waves are explained. The expression of both dissipation time of queued ships and the total number of ships affected in the closed and unclosed restricted channel segment are given.
