Hysterectomy has a variety of medical indications and improves pre-operative symptoms but might compromise the quality of life during recovery due to symptoms such as fatigue, headache, nausea, depression, or pain. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of a standardized extract from French oak wood (Quercus robur) containing at least 40% polyphenols of the ellagitannins class, Robuvit®, on convalescence and oxidative stress of women after hysterectomy. Recovery status was monitored with the SF-36 questionnaire. The supplementation with Robuvit® (300 mg/day) during 4 weeks significantly improved general and mental health, while under placebo some items significantly deteriorated. Oxidative stress and enhancement of MMP–9 activity was significantly reduced by Robuvit® versus placebo. After 8 weeks of intervention, the patients’ condition improved independently of the intervention. Our results suggest that the use of Robuvit® as a natural supplement relieves post-operative symptoms of patients after hysterectomy and reduces oxidative stress. Background.Dyslipidemia produces atherosclerosis, which in turn results in coronary artery disease (CAD). Atherosclerosis is being considered as an inflammatory disease.Vaccinium arctostaphylosL. is a plant with fruits rich in anthocyanins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of fruit extract of this plant on serum levels of lipids, hs-CRP, and malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of oxidative stress, in hyperlipidemic adult patients.Methods.In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 50 hyperlipidemic adult patients were randomly and equally assigned to receive either medicinal (V. arctostaphylosfruit extract) or placebo capsules twice daily for 4 weeks. Each medicinal capsule contained 45 ± 2 mg of anthocyanins. Fasting serum levels of total cholesterol, TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, hs-CRP, and MDA were obtained before and after the intervention and compared.Results. V. arctostaphylosfruit extract significantly reduced total cholesterol (P<0.001), LDL-C (P=0.004), TG (P<0.001), and MDA (P=0.013) compared to placebo but did not have any significant effect on HDL-C (P=0.631) and hs-CRP (P=0.190).Conclusion.Fruit extract ofVaccinium arctostaphyloshas beneficial effects on serum lipid profile and oxidative stress in hyperlipidemic adult patients. Therefore, it could be considered as a supplement for treatment of dyslipidemia and prevention of atherosclerosis development.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of nutraceuticals including bitter melon, fenugreek, cinnamon, alpha-lipoic acid, zinc, biotin, chromium, and cholecalciferol on glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers in hyperglycemia. The study design was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Subjects with hyperglycemia were randomly divided into 2 groups. The treatment group ( n = 52) was given a nutraceutical and the control group ( n = 50) was provided with a placebo for 12 weeks. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), lipid profiles, biomarkers of oxidative stress, and inflammation were assessed before and after the intervention at 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Nutraceutical supplementation demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in FBG (13.4% and 18.9%), HbA1C (6.5% and 11.3%), and HOMA-IR (28.9% and 35.2%) compared with the placebo. Moreover, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) level was significantly reduced in the nutraceutical group (7.1% and 9.3%). Furthermore, the nutraceutical significantly decreased oxidative stress markers, oxidized LDL-C (14.8% and 18.9%) and malondialdehyde (16.6% and 26.2%) compared with the placebo. In conclusion, this nutraceutical can improve glycemic control, insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and oxidative stress markers in hyperglycemic subjects. Therefore, it has the potential to decrease cardiovascular disease risk factors. Clinical trial registration: TCTR20180907001, www.clinicaltrials.in.th.
