An investigation on the surface waviness of both the journal and the bearing bush and their impact on the static characteristics of the hydrodynamic journal bearing is presented in this paper. The finite difference method is introduced to solve a Reynolds equation and obtain the unknown pressure field. The static characteristics, including the load carrying capacity, attitude angle, end leakage flow rate and frictional coefficient are studied under different waviness parameters. The numerically simulated results indicate that the waviness of the bearing bush may deteriorate or enhance the bearing system, depending on the phase angle. The waviness of the journal causes periodic changes in bearing behavior, owing to the alteration in the phase angle. The profile of the journal and bearing surfaces near the attitude angle determines the performance of the bearing system.

In the theoretical analysis of porous bearings the journal has so far been assumed to be ideal, that is perfectly cylindrical. In the present analysis the geometric irregularities of the journal, such as circumferential undulations and barrel/bellmouth shapes, are taken into account. The permeability variation along the length of the bearing as found in commercial bearings has also been taken into account. The present analysis reveals that, at the critical Sommerfeld number, the friction is very low compared to the very high value for an ideal journal. The present analysis also reveals that the friction and the attitude angle are lower for any Sommerfeld number and that the load-carrying capacity is lower for any eccentricity ratio than that for an ideal journal.

The vibration response of a rotor bearing system is extremely important in industries and is challenged by their highly non-linear and complex properties. This paper focuses on performance prediction using response surface method (RSM), which is essential to the design of high performance rotor bearing system. Response surface method is utilized to analysis the effects of design and operating parameters on the vibration response of a rotor-bearing system. A test rig of high speed rotor supported on rolling bearings is used. Vibration response of the healthy ball bearing and ball bearings with various faults are obtained and analyzed. Distributed defects are considered as surface waviness of the bearing components. Effects of internal radial clearance and surface waviness of the bearing components and their interaction are analyzed using design of experiment (DOE) and RSM.

The bushing profiles have important effects on the performance of journal bearing. In this article, the effects of plain profile, double conical profile, and double parabolic profile on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of the journal bearing under steady operating conditions are investigated. The journal misalignment and asperity contact between journal and bushing surface are considered, while the modification of the bushing profiles due to running-in is neglected. Finite element method is used for the elastic deformation of bushing surface, while the numerical solution is established by using finite difference method and overrelaxation iterative method. The numerical results reveal that the double parabolic profile with appropriate size can significantly increase the minimum film thickness and reduce the asperity contact pressure and friction, while the maximum film pressure, load-carrying capacity, and leakage flow rate change slightly under steady operating conditions. This study may help to reduce the edge wear and prolong the service life of the journal bearing.

The static characteristics of misaligned three-axial water-lubricated journal bearing in the turbulent regime are analyzed for groove angles 36° and 18°. Ng and Pan’s turbulence model is applied to study the turbulence effects in the journal bearing. The static parameters such as load-carrying capacity, friction coefficient, and side leakage are found for different degree of misalignment (DM). The change in flow regime of the lubricant from laminar to turbulent and the increase in misalignment, improved the load capacity of the bearing. For lightly loaded bearings, the friction coefficient of the bearing increased with the increase in Reynolds number.

An endeavour has been made to study and analyze the behaviour of a magnetic fluid-based squeeze film between curved transversely rough rotating circular plates when the curved upper plate lying along a surface determined by an exponential function approaches the curved lower plate along the surface governed by a secant function. A magnetic fluid is used as the lubricant in the presence of an external magnetic field oblique to the radial axis. The random roughness of the bearing surfaces is characterised by a stochastic random variable with nonzero mean, variance, and skewness. The associated nondimensional averaged Reynolds equation is solved with suitable boundary conditions in dimensionless form to obtain the pressure distribution, leading to the expression for the load carrying capacity. The results establish that the bearing system registers an enhanced performance as compared to that of the bearing system dealing with a conventional lubricant. This investigation proves that albeit the bearing suffers due to transverse surface roughness, there exist sufficient scopes for obtaining a relatively better performance in the case of negatively skewed roughness by properly choosing curvature parameters and the rotation ratio. It is appealing to note that the negative variance further enhances this positive effect.

A rotor-hydrodynamic bearing system having external flexible damped bearing supports is more complicated than that discussed in Part 1 but it can provide a means to improve the stability of the rotor system. A model for both vertical and horizontal analysis is developed first. Then, the analytical study on the vertical rotor is conducted. The results show that there can be up to four threshold speeds in this configuration that form a consecutive regional pattern, taking turns by stable or unstable regions. Furthermore, the numerical calculation by MATLAB is carried out to obtain the results for the horizontal system. The stability maps for various parametric configurations are presented. It has been shown that the value of support damping has a strong effect on the first several lower threshold speeds. But it has little effect on the last top threshold speed which is mainly determined by the portion of journal mass. Within a certain range of external damping value, the first several regions of instability can be reduced or eradicated. As far as the entire stability map is concerned, there is an optimum range of support damping that can make the rotor have only one top threshold speed over the entire running speed range. When the support stiffness is increased, the system stability map becomes narrow which means a small support stiffness is good for broadening the range of optimum external damping.

Survey of patents on bearings indicates the maturity of hydrodynamic and rapid development of magnetic bearings. Active magnetic bearings are costlier compared with permanent magnetic bearings. To understand the performance characteristics of permanent magnetic bearings, an experimental setup has been developed. Experimental studies on radial permanent magnetic bearings demonstrated the drawbacks, such as high axial thrust and low load capacity. This has led the authors to hybridize the permanent magnet with hydrodynamic technology and to explore the possibility of achieving the low starting torque of a permanent magnetic bearing and the medium to high load carrying capacity of a hydrodynamic bearing in a single bearing arrangement. Simulation is carried out in order to reduce axial force-effect and enhance the radial force supported by the permanent magnetic bearing. Results of simulation on permanent magnetic bearing have been compared with that of published research papers. Finally an algorithm has been developed to investigate the coupling of forces generated by permanent magnets and hydrodynamic actions. Results of load sharing have been reported. The experimentally measured displacements of the shaft running at 500, 2000, and 3000 r/min have been plotted. The effect of hydrodynamics on shaft orbit has been illustrated.

This paper is an attempt to provide a dynamic analysis of a rigid rotor-gear pair-hydrodynamic bearing system with journal motions in the oil film space of the bearings. A mathematical model has been developed considering the kinematics of the gear pair as affected by journal motions and using a concept of an instantaneous line of action. Effects of bearing parameters on dynamic tooth loads have been studied. The load-speed environment of hydrodynamic bearings supporting the geared rotors is shown to be affected by journal motions in bearings. Results indicate that, for the given gear pair and the given static load-speed conditions, dynamic increments in gear tooth loads and bearing loads vary with bearing parameters (viz. clearances and oil viscosities).
