On 26 September 2019, a massive iceberg broke off the west side of the Amery Ice Shelf (AIS) in East Antarctica. Since 1973, the AIS calving front has steadily advanced at a rate of 1.0 km yr−1. However, the advancement rate of the central portion of the AIS increased dramatically during 2012–2015, which indicates a velocity increase prior to the calving event. Eight calving front locations from 1973 to 2018 were mapped to investigate the advancement rate of AIS over the entire observational period. Additionally, the propagation of rift A was observed unstable from 2012 to 2015. The westward propagation rate of rift A1 increased to 3.7 km yr−1 from 2015 to 2017, which was considerably faster than the other rifts near the AIS calving front. The increased advancement rate and the increasing propagation magnitude of at least one active rift appear to be precursors of this large calving event.

The Roman Ermine Street, having crossed the Humber on the way to York from Lincoln, leaves Brough Haven on its west side, and the little town of Petuaria to the east. For the first half-mile northwards from the Haven its course is not certainly known: then, followed by the modern road, it runs northwards through South Cave towards Market Weighton. In the area thus traversed by the Roman road burials of the Roman age have already been noted in sufficient quantity to suggest an extensive cemetery. The interment which is the subject of the present note was found on 10th October 1936, when men laying pipes at right angles to the modern road, in the carriage-drive of Mr. J. G. Southam, having cut through some 4 ft. of blown sand, came upon a mass of mixed Roman pottery, dating from the late first to the fourth century A.D. Bones of pig, dog, sheep, and ox were also represented. Presently, at a depth of about 5 ft., something attracted closer attention. A layer of thin limestone slabs was found, covering two human skeletons, one lying a few feet from the west margin of the modern road, the other parallel with the road and some 8 ft. from its edge. The objects described below were found with the second skeleton, and the first to be discovered was submitted by Mr. Southam to Mr. T. Sheppard, F.S.A.Scot., Director of the Hull Museums, who visited the site with his staff. All that can be recorded of the circumstances of the discovery is contained in the observations then made, under difficult conditions. ‘Slabs of hard limestone’, it was reported, ‘taken from a local quarry of millepore oolite and forming the original Roman road, were distinctly visible beneath the present roadway—one of the few points where the precise site of the old road has been located. On the side of this… a burial-place has been constructed. What it was like originally it is difficult to say, beyond that a layer of thin … slabs of limestone occurred over the skeletons. This had probably been kept in place or supported by some structure of wood, as several large iron nails, some bent at right angles, were among the bones.’ If this were all that could be said about the burials, they would hardly merit a place in these pages. The chief interest of the record would be its apparent identification of the exact course of the Roman road at a point where this had hitherto been uncertain. Three objects associated with the second skeleton are, however, of exceptional interest.

AbstractA study of the geomorphology of the Prince Charles Mountains using colour vertical air photographs shows well–preserved old moraines throughout much of the outcrop area. Along Fisher Glacier, lower Lambert Glacier and the Amery Ice Shelf, within the altitude range 50–2 000 m, the old moraines show that the ice level had risen 150–200 m above the present level at least three times. Old moraines elsewhere show that none of the other glaciers had risen significantly in their upper parts; the rise of their lower parts was caused by the rise of lower Lambert Glacier and the Amery Ice Shelf. The changes in ice level are unlikely to be due to climatic change because this would not repeatedly affect only one glacier draining central Antarctica. It is thought that the changes in ice level are caused by repeated surges of Fisher Glacier.

The village of Kalývia Sokhás lies against the base of one of the massive foothills in which Taygetus falls to the plain three or four miles to the south of Sparta (Plate 26, 1). It is bounded by two rivers which flow down in deep clefts from the mountain shelf. The hillside above rises steeply to a summit which is girt with cliffs on all but the west side and cannot be much less than four thousand feet above sea level; this von Prott believed to be the peak of Taleton. Its summit is crowned by the ruins of a mediaeval castle which was undoubtedly built as a stronghold to overlook the Spartan plain; the only dateable object found there, a sherd of elaborate incised ware, indicates occupation at the time when the Byzantines were in possession of Mystra. The location of the other sites mentioned by Pausanias in this region remains obscure, but fortunately that of the Spartan Eleusinion has not been in doubt since von Prott discovered a cache of inscriptions at the ruined church of H. Sophia in the village of Kalývia Sokhás. In 1910 Dawkins dug trenches at the foot of the slope immediately above the village and recovered a fragment of a stele relating to the cult of the goddesses and pieces of inscribed tiles from the sanctuary. The abundance of water in the southern ravine led von Prott to conclude that the old town of Bryseai with its cult of Dionysus also lay at Kalývia Sokhás; but no traces of urban settlement have come to light at the village, and the name rather suggests copious springs such as issue from the mountain foot at Kefalári a mile to the north where ancient blocks are to be seen in the fields.

Some years ago in an article offered in honour of my friend, Dr. Jírí Neustupný, I described three settlements on small off-shore islands round the coasts of South Greece, where some of the native population appear to have taken refuge during the period of the Slav invasions in the sixth and seventh centuries A.D. (Fig. 1). In August 1969, when I was in Galaxidhi on the west side of the bay of Itea, Mrs. Lois Ventris told me about a group of islets there with traces of similar occupation. These island refuge settlements of the period of the Slav invasions are of some interest in themselves, and they open the door to what might be a fruitful line of inquiry as regards the problem of the Slav occupation of South Greece.There are seven islets in all in the bay of Itea, and of these I was able to visit the three nearest to Galaxidhi, namely (1) Panayia, (2) Ayios Yeoryios, and (3) Apsifia (Figs. 2, 3). These three islands all had traces of habitation in the late Roman or early Byzantine period, including pottery assignable to the sixth or early seventh centuries A.D.: notably, fragments of amphorae with straight and wavy grooved decoration (Plate 14d, 4–6), and rims of dishes of fine red (Late Roman B) ware imported from North Africa. These rims (nos. 6–8, 12) belong to dishes of a type (Ant. 802) found in the Late Phase of the Late Roman period at Antioch, lasting from about the middle of the sixth century A.D. into the seventh. I recovered one or two fragments of clay lamps from (1) Panayia (Plate 14d, 1–2), but saw none on the other two islands which I visited. Some of the Roman pottery from (1) Panayia and (2) Ayios Yeoryios appears to date from a time before the Slav invasions. There are also traces of medieval or later occupation here.

In January, 1930, my brother started work on a garage on the west side of the Great North Road between Baldock and Stevenage, in the parish of Great Wymondley, and 180 yards south of the milestone indicating 34 miles to London. A hole in the chalk containing black soil and pottery was found in sinking a petrol tank.It was a bowl-shaped pit (see Plate XXXV., Pit 1), showing in section on the chalk wall just dug, its greatest width being 8 ft., and the depth 5 ft. from the surface. Above the solid chalk was 2 ft. of soil, shading evenly from yellow at the base to dark yellow at the surface, and showing no variation or disturbance over the pit, as if the whole top-soil had been laid down after the pit had been filled in. I was fortunate in having Mr. T. C. Lethbridge, F.S.A., to help me clear this and the other pits, and on the first day we had the help and advice of Dr. Cyril Fox. F.S.A., and Mr. Louis Clarke, F.S.A.By digging down from the surface we found that the pit was irregular in shape and extended 6 ½ ft. back from the chalk face. The filling was of dark soil varying in colour.There were three layers which, from the quantity of wood ash in them, might have been hearths. In the filling were numerous brook pebbles cracked and blackened by fire (potboilers probably), and many potsherds.

Papua is a place which is potential to have variety of cultural heritage of megalithic, and it spreads over the Papua. The megalithic tradition has been in this area since the prehistory period, even this it is continuing until today. The influence of this culture in Papua came from the west side through Sulawesi, Maluku and finally reached to Papua. Moreover, from the north side, it came through the Mikronesia area, Melanesia dan then arrived to Papua. The culture of megalithic is believed that it is influnced by the Austronesia people. The forms of megalithic in Papua include the terraces stone, mareuw, stone pole, ainining duka, mortar stone, sharpening stone, stone path, soul path, stone enclosure, megalithic archa, woming stone, throne stone, menhir (standing stone), table stone (dolmen), engraving stone, carving stone, totor, and turtle stone. This discovery of megalithic culture is related with the religious activity dan the other social cuture activities. AbstrakPapua merupakan salah satu wilayah yang memiliki potensi keberadaan tinggalan budaya megalitik yang cukup banyak dan beragam bentuknya, lokasinya tersebar hampir di seluruh wilayah tersebut. Kehadiran tradisi megalitik di wilayah ini, sudah ada sejak zaman prasejarah, bahkan di beberapa tempat di Papua tradisi megalitik masih berlangsung hingga kini. Pengaruh budaya megalitik di wilayah Papua datang melalui dua jalur yaitu jalur barat melalui daerah Sulawesi, Maluku, hingga sampai ke Papua. Sedangkan jalur utara melalui wilayah Mikronesia, Melanesia, dan sampai ke Papua. Keberadaan budaya megalitik di Papua sebagai salah satu bentuk pengaruh dari bangsa Austronesia. Bentuk-bentuk tinggalan megalitik di wilayah Papua berupa bangunan berundak, mareuw, tiang batu, ainining duka, lumpang batu, batu asah, jajaran batu, jalan arwah, batu temugelang, area megalitik, batu peringatan, tahta batu, menhir, dolmen, batu bergores, pahatan batu, totor, dan batu teteruga. Temuantemuan tinggalan budaya tradisi megalitik tersebut berkaitan erat dengan aktivitas religi dan aktivitas sosial budaya lainnya.

I knew it'd get better. I knew I wouldn't be lonely forever. So what if I was from the west side of town? So what if I was the only Chinese kid in the grade? So what if my jeans weren't Jordache and my notebook wasn't a Trapper Keeper? On my first day at Woodcrest Elementary School, when all the other girls and boys swiveled in their seats to check out the new kid, I smiled back, thinking, “I like you. I like me. And at some point, you're going to like me, too!” By the end of the week, I was inviting classmates over to my house after school. This showed that I really did like them, and soon they were inviting me back.

This article deals with excavations made in Fonyód between 1996–1998 and in 2001, where we located 10 and 11th century old cemeteries. The first excavation was centered by the sandpit near the 150 year-old press house. Due to nu-merous field works lasted for decades, a large group of burials were almost completely destroyed. We were able to determi-nate its age and characteristics from the skeleton remains and funeral offerings of one grave (S-terminalled lockrings). Dur-ing our other excavation made on a small dune at Sándor street 26, we found a similar cemetary from the 10–11th cen-tury with 54 graves and burial remains. Based on the pottery findings, it was in use by the Romans and later became the funeral site of the early inhabitants of Fonyód. The early Ar-padian cemetary was located on the west side of the mound. The graves were situated westward-eastward mostly without funeral offerings, but in nine cases we recovered notable fin-digs like bronze S-terminalled lockrings, shell necklaces and bronze rings on the annulary bones. We could not find any coffins or traces of bricks in the recovered area. There were many instances of skeleton remains of adolescent or small children beside the adult skeletons – mostly female – which indicate family burials. Furthermore, we recovered skeletons positioned with both arms across the waist. Towards the west, a five meter wide empty tract occured to us where a jar and two kinds of animal bones surfaced – one of a dog and the other possibly of a boar. Considering there were no other find-ings in that area, it might have been a significant place for burial customs or further ceremonial rituals.

There are 11 species of mistletoes in the genus Tristerix (Loranthaceae) endemic to the Andes in South America (1,2). Tristerix verticillatus (Ruiz & Pav.) Barlow & Wiens is distributed on the east side of the Andes from Bolivia to Argentina at high elevations (>1,500 m). On the west side of the Andes, it is only found in Chile where it occurs at low to high elevations (50 to 3,000 m). Along its range, the mistletoe parasitizes more than 25 species, mainly Anarcadiaceae and Rhamnaceae. In February of 2007, it was observed to be parasitizing Schinus fasciculatus (Griseb.) I.M. Johnst. (Anacardiaceae) at two locations in the Sierra de San Luis, Argentina. One location was 6 km south of Las Chacras on Route 31 (32°35′56″S, 65°47′6″W, elevation 1,185 m) and the other was 12 km north of El Trapiche on Route 9 (33°1′21″S, 66°4′11″W, elevation 1,260 m). At these localities, the mistletoe was in full flower and parasitized only one host species, S. fasciculatus. No mortality associated with infection by this mistletoe was observed at either location. Specimens of the mistletoe were collected from both locations and deposited at the Centro Regional Universitario Bariloche Herbarium (BCRU), Río Negro, Argentina. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a Tristerix sp. outside the Andes and extends the eastern distribution of the genus by ≈270 km and also of S. fasciculatus serving as a host for T. verticillatus since previous collections were from other species of Schinus.
