Integration of Eco-centric Views of Sustainability in Port Planning

The sustainability approach commits to conserving natural resources and biodiversity. In ports, many efforts that encourage improvement in sustainability exist, such as sustainable ports, eco-ports, or green ports. However, whether the current planning approaches for sustainable ports, eco-ports, and green ports can effectively achieve sustainability remains a question. This study aims to discuss this issue through a literature review. The main findings include (1) the current sustainable port planning following the ambitions of sustainable development and aiming to fulfill this generation’s needs; (2) the eco-port planning approaches emphasizing environmental protection; (3) the planning approaches for green ports that have emerged within environmental management and give attention to the ecological issues; (4) all of the three approaches prioritizing environmental issues. We argue for the integration of eco-centric views for sustainability in port planning from a maritime supply chain perspective, and based on this, the concept of the green port is proposed. This study provides broad and mindful information regarding port sustainability education and can help foster innovation in order to face the challenges in sustainability.

It arises due to the impressive difference in the provision of natural resources, residents’ mentality, natural and climate factors, the infrastructure that has formed over the years of territory’s existence, and other various conditions. The emergence of a new pandemic, known as COVID-19, has touched various sections of the supply chain (SC). Since then, numerous studies have been conducted on the issue, but the need for a holistic review study that highlights the gaps and limits of previous research, as well as opportunities and agendas for future studies, is palpable. Through a systematic literature review on blockchain technology (BCT) deployment in supply-chain management (SCM) concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, this research seeks to add to the content of previous studies and to enlighten the path for future studies. Relevant papers were found using a variety of resources (Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ProQuest). Seventy-two articles were systematically selected, considering the PRISMA procedure, and were thoroughly analyzed based on BCT, methodologies, industrial sectors, geographical, and sustainability context. According to our findings, there is a significant lack of empirical and quantitative methodologies in the literature. The majority of studies did not take specific industries into account. Furthermore, the articles focusing on the sustainability context are few, particularly regarding social and environmental issues. In addition, most of the reviewed papers did not consider the geographical context. The results indicate that the deployment of BCT in several sectors is not uniform, and this utilization is reliant on their services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the concentration of research on the impacts of the BCT on SCM differs according to the conditions of various countries in terms of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings also show that there is a direct relationship between the deployment of BCT and sustainability factors, such as economic and waste issues, under the circumstances surrounding COVID-19. Finally, this study offers research opportunities and agendas to help academics and other stakeholders to gain a better knowledge of the present literature, recognize aspects that necessitate more exploration, and drive prospective studies.

The article discusses issues related to the evolution of the concept of strategic management towards sustainable strategic management. In the literature, the idea of strategic management refers basically to the functioning of the organization and its activity in the economy. Currently, there is also an emphasis put on integrating environmental issues into the organization’s activities and taking care of the interests of the society, so the strategic management should combine economic aspects with ecological and social care in mind of future generations. A change of an approach from strategic management to sustainable strategic management assumes implementation of management strategies that will protect natural resources, reduce the harmful activity of enterprises on the environment and take care of current and future populations. Just as the business environment and the perception of environmental interests change, so the strategic management itself does, as a concept itself and as a guideline for the business’ functioning. Organizations following the idea of sustainable development, based on environmentally and socially friendly strategies, and aware of the consequences of their actions, here and now, are considered more productive and attractive, as well as stronger and more competitive. The evolution of general assumptions and approaches of strategic management changing within years towards the concept of sustainable strategic management enriched with the crucial environmental issues are discussed in this paper.

The use of microorganisms as part of environmental management action, aimed at dealing with environmental issues, results in an interesting and more environmentally friendly alternative to the conventional physicochemical decontamination methods. In this sense, a profile of the use of microorganisms in environmental management would prove helpful for people and organizations to make their processes more sustainable. However, the publications that describe the use of microorganisms within environmental management tend to show their author’s point of view, rather than the results of a systematic study in this field of knowledge. Consequently, descriptions of microorganisms, environmental issues and economic sectors involved do not necessarily reflect how developed research in microbiology and environmental management is. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the use given to microorganisms within environmental management, providing a profile related to the environmental issues tackled, natural resources affected, and economic sectors involved. A systematic review of scientific literature published between 2012 and 2017 led us to the description of three types of use given to microorganisms, six types of natural resources protected through such uses, ten types of environmental issues, and eight economic sectors in which the uses mentioned are applicable.

World experience indicates that the problems of ensuring sustainable development of agriculture have become an urgent need, therefore, the concepts of traditional technology for cultivating crops should be substantially revised not only from the standpoint of environmental management, but also to improve the economic situation in the industry. Greening of agriculture contributes to natural restoration of soil fertility, maintaining the balance of nature, on which agricultural economy largely depends. A growing quantity of farms in the USA, China, Russia, India, Japan and the EU countries conduct their farming in harmony with nature. The ultimate goals of their activities are ecologically balanced farming, animal husbandry and this agriculture industry technology acts as an alternative to traditional (industrial) farming. Development of organic agriculture involves the search and implementation of new technologies from a science-based position and due to the laws of optimal environmental management. In the article, the authors substantiate the need to enhance introduction of organic farming methods in order to ensure sustainable development and sustainable use of natural resources. Based on the study of foreign agriculture experience, the authors developed a number of key measures for the development of organic agriculture in Russian conditions.

The environmental issues and the projected world population increase have brought into light many different terms and concepts. For over 20 years, sustainability attracts the main focus of most researchers; however, recently the concept of circular economy (CE) is considered to be its successor. CE is based on a closed loop supply chain, where waste is minimized and reintroduced into the supply chain, thus requiring a systemic change. In the agri-food sector, the CE principles have many possible applications. This chapter provides a CE perspective for the dairy supply chain by identifying and analyzing the associated technologies and strategies through a literature review taxonomy based on the related stage of the supply chain.

The amount of MSMEs units about 99.99 percent of the overall number of business operators in Indonesia showed that MSMEs play a significant role in economic growth and development. At the same time, MSMEs cumulative contribution to environmental issues is not recorded MSMEs participation in the cleaner environment has not yet been noticed. Thus, the environmental management system for MSMes is crucial. This study is a literature review about the implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system in MSMEs, challenges and its future potential. The result and discussion discussed the case study of ISO 14001 implementation in Indonesia and other countries. Case studies from Indonesia and other countries showed that implementation of ISO 14001 is possible for MSMEs. The biggest challenges of its implementation is cost, the competence of employees, and resources available for the organization. An alternative for overcoming these challenges is implementing other models of EMS that is more suitable for MSMEs. The important aspects is the environmental awareness of the stakeholders and the internal and external drivers within the organization. Further studies can be done to research specific case studies of EMS such as ISO 14001 or AMEMs implementation in MSMEs.

This paper discusses local wisdom from local communities in Indonesiain environmental management of natural resources asimplementation of sustainable development. The purpose of this paper isprovide an overview of the forms of natural resource management andovercoming environmental problems based on local wisdom asinsight for community development activities. This research is descriptivequalitative analytical descriptive method using a theoretical approachcultural ecology through literature study. From the results of this study, it is known that the valuesculture in Indonesia tends to be ecocentric and biocentric, so it cansaid to be a deep ecology (ecology that is deep / concentrated). Apart from that, it was shown toocultural values ??regulate the management of natural resources wisely. This writingalso shows that local wisdom as cultural ecology is an insightimportant in community development activities because it is not just shapingindependence and creating prosperity. Currently, studies of the problems of convergence of leading countries in terms of the lean use of natural resources, the reduction of harmful emissions and the transition to using new types of energy carriers are highly relevant, with regard to sustainable development mainstream. At the same time, the majority of authors consider convergent processes from an economic or socio-political point of view. In this regard, the article examines the issues of ecological convergence, as a special structural shift in the economy, leading to radical positive changes in the environmental management system and a decrease in anthropogenic impact on the environment.
