In Cape Verde, small family farming production suffers continuously from limited essential resources such as water and soil for a steady development. This situation is further aggravated by the lack of financial resources. We have developed a hybrid and multidimensional conceptual model for improvement of those small farming units by bringing together concepts of quality management, farmers’ satisfaction evaluation and production capabilities. The model we have built was the result of an inquiry based on Focus Group study with 15 farmers and it was carried out in 2019. We name the model as SQual4Agri and this is a step toward improvement in small family based agricultural organization, namely in productivity, responsibility sharing, communication and quality management.

The integration between quality management and supply chain management is a new research topic in operations research. In the effort of developing a new direction for this integration, a conceptual model of Supply Chain Quality Management (SCQM) practices was proposed and validated by the data collected in Vietnam. As a result, a set of dimensional, reliable and valid concepts that covers all main activities of the supply chain is established. We expect that this model can be used as “a guideline” for the measurement and implementation of SCQM practices as well as facilitates future researches in this field.

Family farming has been on the agenda worldwide. Portugal is no exception. Act No. 64/2018, published in 2018, establishes the Family Farming Statute. Its preponderance in food and in the sustainability of families and territories has been reinforced by the sustainable development paradigm. However, competitiveness constraints assigned to the production system is often seen as an obstacle. Combining the theoretical frameworks of integrated agriculture and work organizations, we offer a lean sociological perspective on family farms producing lettuce. We concluded that their production system is characterized by a set of innovative practices very close to a lean approach. However, there is room for improvements in a production system that seems to maintain a family-based workforce and traditional know-how.

Meaning-focused coping is important in cancer survivorship because it is strongly related to successful adjustment and psychological well-being after cancer diagnosis. This chapter provides background information on meaning-making processes in cancer survivors and describes a four-step adaptation process of meaning-centered group psychotherapy for cancer survivors (MCGP-CS). Step 1 was a focus group study on meaning-making issues in Dutch cancer survivors. In step 2, expert meetings on meaning-making in cancer survivorship were conducted. Step 3 comprised the adaptation of the MCGP manual, and step 4 was a pilot study to test the feasibility of the adapted manual. Finally, the results of a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of MCGP-CS and a client satisfaction evaluation are provided, and some recommendations for future adaptations to implement MDCG-CS in clinical practice are proposed.

Abstract This article examines the main tendencies and perspectives of peasant family farming (PFF) in agricultural frontiers such as the Amazon. The ontological features of PFF are discussed, in particular the multiple associations with, and subsumption to, agribusiness. Due to national politico-economic pressures, the Amazon was reinvented half a century ago as a vibrant agricultural frontier that attracted a vast contingent of migrants due to coordinated government plans and, in more recent years, the cultivation of export-oriented crops. One very intriguing feature of this dynamic geography is that small family farming represents the Other of capitalist agriculture, but it functions as a hesitant form of alterity that both resists and fulfils agribusiness.

This article reviews the literature and applies principal-to-principal (PP) conflict theory to small family based businesses. The lack of accurate measurement and communication of risk leading to issues with innovation, is the primary cause of PP agency costs. Careful analysis of the risk levels reflected in the cost of debt and opportunity cost of equity provides a theoretically robust and empirically estimable process for ascertaining the true PP agency cost. Awareness of the constraining governance structures and the suggested method, based on the cost of capital, to assess small business risk can assist SME owners and financiers to SMEs to promote business efficiency and innovation.
