The inventory and assessment of a geosite in a territory provides a sound basis for the protection and use of its geological heritage. This article aims to evaluate the most relevant geosites in the province of Chimborazo (Ecuador), applying the Spanish Inventory of Sites of Geological Interest (IELIG, in Spanish) method, and proposing alternatives for geotourism development in the studied area. The methodological process was based on: (i) the inventory and preliminary selection of geosites; (ii) a semi-quantitative geosite assessment and proposal of travel itineraries for geotourism; and (iii) the application of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) matrix to establish geotourism development strategies within a framework of sustainability. The global assessment of scientific, tourist, and academic interests demonstrates that 25% of the 20 evaluated geosites have very high interest and 75% have high interest. The top three geosites with the highest degrees of interest are the Chimborazo Volcano, known as ‘Earth’s Closest Point to the Sun’, the Pallatanga geological fault, and the geosite named Comunidad Cacha. The SWOT analysis reveals that travel itineraries that combine cultural heritage elements and geosites could offer a real alternative for the region’s sustainable development through geotourism.

The relevant geomorphological characteristics of territory represent an essential part of its natural heritage. They are also an asset to be exploited for stimulating socio-economic development. The “Ruta Escondida” in Ecuador constitutes a historical place full of culture and landscapes that have been shaped over time by geological and geomorphological processes. Among the geomorphological features of the study area, volcanic cones, hilltops, terraces, foothills and glacial valleys stand out. The aims of this work were: (1) to characterize 18 places of geomorphological interest, located in the northern part of the Ruta Escondida and (2) to propose alternatives (geotourism) to contribute to the local development of the area. The applied methodology included: (1) the compilation of geomorphological elements; (2) the assessment of geomorphosites using the Inventario Español de Lugares de Interés Geológico (IELIG) method and (3) a strengths–opportunities–weaknesses–threats analysis of the contribution and influence of geomorphosites in the development of the study area. With this work, it was possible to determine that all the analyzed geomorphological sites have a high and very high interest. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis revealed that the geomorphosites could provide significant added value to the development of geotourism on the route, complementing the already known cultural and historical attractions.

AbstractThe selection of the best ideas of entrepreneurship and good sources of financing are important elements in decision-making in small and medium enterprises. For this reason two theoretical methods based on multi-criteria analysis were developed. The application of the procedures in the context of a case study allowed us to select the best business idea and assessment of the funding source associated with a project related to the creation of a poultry farm, contributing to local development strategy and security food.

Ineffective local development due to globalisation and urban agglomeration causes a significant gap between urban and rural areas. The need to promote the contribution of local development in rural areas has been a topic of debate and could be fulfilled by an innovative method. This research proposes a village alliance as the innovative framework to analyse the local potential within the case study area of Lubuk Sepang Village, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. The framework of village alliance fits in the sustainability concepts that integrates Lubuk Sepang Village with eight other villages as an alliance as well as an applicative method that is representative of most dominant context of the rural area development, especially in Indonesia. Regarding the local potential, this research uses a case study method to explore a sustainable tourism scenario by using multiple tools: field survey, expert interviews, maps analysis, and SWOT analysis. The research aims to explore the local potential and outline the integration of the heritage richness with other potential elements based on the tourism advancement perspective. The result is an initial stage for the prospective method of protection, valorisation, and development of the local heritage richness.

The concept of circular economy is becoming increasingly important not only for academics, but also for other stakeholders. Notably the local government representatives are implementing such solutions, in response for the population growth and development, connected with increased consumption. This paper aims to recognize existing local solutions of circular economy as well as to identify possible ways for its development. Mixed methodology is used, including constructive approach, swot analysis, descriptive statistics or weak-market test. An analysis emphasizes a positive impact of circular economy on local development of the investigated municipality. However, it is still necessary to continue and intensify information and education activities for increasing public awareness of waste prevention, their removal under communal waste collection and collection systems, and proper management of municipal waste (especially biodegradable waste).

Travel itineraries are fundamental in the development of tourism of a given area. Traditional thematic routes (e.g., architectural, archaeological) can be significantly improved and optimized by including geological and mining interest sites. The present study offers an analysis of the influence that inclusion of geosites or mining sites could have on the existing routes of the Zaruma-Portovelo region (Ecuador), together with a global assessment of these itineraries as the basis of fostering local development in communities of the region. The methodology consists of the following stages: (i) compilation of existing travel itineraries; (ii) analysis and assessment of those geosites and mining sites that are included in two geotouristic routes through the Spanish Inventory of Places of Geological Interest method (IELIG, acronym in Spanish), but have not been assessed previously; (iii) assessment of existing routes (two geotouristic routes and one geomining route) from a global perspective through the Geotouristic Route Assessment Matrix method (GtRAM, acronym in Spanish); and (iv) definition of strategies for the development and promotion of travel itineraries within the context of geotourism. According to the results of quantitative assessment, three new sites (both geosites and mining sites) were studied and their obtained score of interest was “High” (164/400). The existing routes achieved good results both from the geological-mining perspective “High” score of (189/400) and within a global context “Very High” score of (3.5/5). The quantitative assessment allowed us to propose improvement strategies to disseminate and use these itineraries to unfold sustainable development based on geotourism.

Nowadays, many companies collect online user reviews to determine how users evaluate their products. Dalpiaz and Parente proposed the RE-SWOT method to automatically generate a SWOT matrix based on online user reviews. The SWOT matrix is an important basis for a company to perform competitive analysis; therefore, RE-SWOT is a very helpful tool for organizations. Dalpiaz and Parente calculated feature performance scores based on user reviews and ratings to generate the SWOT matrix. However, the authors did not propose a solution for situations when user ratings are not available. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for forums to only have user reviews but no user ratings. In this paper, sentiment analysis is used to deal with the situation where user ratings are not available. We also use KKday, a start-up online travel agency in Taiwan as an example to demonstrate how to use the proposed method to build a SWOT matrix.

The purpose of this study was to determine the internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external (opportunities and threats) factors in Mandiri Mushroom’s business and to determine the right strategy for marketing oyster mushrooms in Mandiri Mushroom business. The analysis method used is the SWOT analysis. The result showed that internal and external factors based on weighting and rating obtained scores for the main strength factor in this Mandiri Mushrooms business werw the good quality of oyster mushrooms and the weakness namely the lack of venture capital. Meanwhile, the most supportive opportunity factor for marketing in this business is that it can compete with other oyster mushroom businesses and the threat factor that will be faced is the presence of pests that cause oyster mushrooms to not develop properly. The strategy that should be applied to this Mandiri Mushroom business based on the SWOT matrix is the Strengths-Opportunities (S-O) strategy, which is to try to use its main strengths to maintain the quality of oyster mushrooms so that they get the main opportunity, which is to compete with other oyster mushrooms businesses.

AbstractThis research paper aims to model Mass Movements Susceptibility (MMS) in the province of Tétouan. First, we identified the characteristics and spatial mapping of the different types of MM (collapse, mudflows, and complex landslides) by means of the interpretation of satellite images and from fieldwork. Subsequently, we selected the predictive parameters controlling the occurrence of MM e.g. lithology, land use, fault density, hydrographic network density, slope degrees, slope aspects, and elevation. We used the heuristic method for Modeling Mass Movements Susceptibility (MMMS). The choice of this method compared to other methods (fractal, factorial, and neurons) is justified by the possibilities of intervention and the judgment of the expert who relies on the ground truth to select the parameters, to identify the classes, and to assign the weights to each one; unlike to other methods with steps that are done automatically and randomly. The results of the validation of the susceptibility map correspond to 70% compared to the field data and it includes five susceptibility classes (not susceptible, low, moderate, high, and very high). Indeed, the originality of this paper relies on the fact that the creation of our susceptibility map will eventually indicate the areas of roads, dwellings, the extension of urbanization, and dams, which are located in areas at risk of MM. Our map is also a powerful decision-making tool to conduct management plans and to guide the selection of sites to build new projects; which help mitigate the socio-economic impacts usually encountered when mass movements in Tétouan province are triggered.
