Standing Seam Metal Roofs (SSMRs) are widely used in the construction of industrial buildings, and their structural characteristics are rapidly being changed in order to improve the parameters of heat insulation and waterproofness. However, newly employed SSMRs did not account for a potential structural instability under strong winds by considering the multi-function of SSMRs. In this study, three different types of new SSMRs were chosen as specimens and were used in full-scale experiments, which were performed using the cyclic wind uplift method based on ASTM E1592 regulations. In contrast to a previous study in which the ultimate failure of the roof under wind pressure corresponded to seam line failure due to panel deflection, in this study, the experimental results show that seam separation was induced by a mid-clip rupture. It is verified that the behavior of the mid-clip plays a significant role in the overall performance of SSMRs under wind uplift loading. The objectives of this study were to (i) understand the structural performance and failure mode of new SSMRs under wind uplift pressure, as this condition is closest to reality, and to (ii) quantify the structural sustainability, which can be applied to risk-management practices through the established performance evaluation. It is expected that the present research results may provide future directions for improving the test standards, design guidelines, and risk-management practices.

The adaptability is important in the technological reformation of industrial building. Bracket girder and cut column (BGCC), are widely used to expand the space and to increase the inner working room of the buildings. Reformation of the exiting industrial building is limited to the continuous and non-stop working and (must be) in service and the reformation is required to be non-stop. Industrial buildings, especially the industrial single-storey workshops mostly belong to static determinate and low-order static indeterminate structures and many risks may be faced during the BGCC reformation under the complicated working conditions, such as variable structure risk, structural failure caused by overload, injuries of workers resulted from the unsafe construction, injuries of the production workers due to construction operation, etc. Research on the safety risk management of the industrial building BGCC reformation is of great significance for ensuring the technological transformation of industrial enterprises and controlling the risks from the reformation of adaptability of industrial buildings in China. Consequently, based on the approaches of risk identifying on work decomposition structure(WBS) and the questionnaire, the whole process design and construction management methods are proposed to control the risks in the reformation of the exiting industrial buildings, and the total management of construction process can be used to reduce injury risks of engineering staffs. In this paper, the technological key points of the whole process design control and construction management are discussed in details based on examples of BGCC reformation of exiting industrial single-storey buildings and the corresponding injury risk management methods are suggested.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Shariah governance and corporate governance (CG) on the risk management practices (RMPs) of local Islamic banks and foreign Islamic banks operating in Malaysia. The Shariah governance comprises the Shariah review (SR) and Shariah audit (SA) variables. The study also evaluates the level of RMPs, CG, SR, and SA between these two type of banks. With the aid of SPSS version 20, the items for RMPs, CG, SR, and SA were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). From the PCA, one component or factor was extracted each for the CG, SR, and RMPs while another two factors were extracted for the SA. Primary data was collected using a self-administered survey questionnaire. The questionnaire covers four aspects ; CG, SR, SA, and RMPs. The data received from the 300 usable questionnaires were subjected to correlation and regression analyses as well as an independent t-test. The result of correlation analysis shows that all the four variables have large positive correlations with each other indicating a strong and significant relationship between them. From the regression analysis undertaken, CG, SR, and SA together explained 52.3 percent of the RMPs and CG emerged as the most influential variable that impacts the RMPs. The independent t-test carried out shows that there were significant differences in the CG and SA between the local and foreign Islamic banks. However, there were no significant differences between the two types of the bank in relation to SR and RMPs. The study has contributed to the body of knowledge and is beneficial to academicians, industry players, regulators, and other stakeholders.

Buildings preservation by the conversion of their function has become a domain of interest in the field of industrial heritage. Due to the need to expand existing housing capacities in urban areas, a large number of industrial buildings are nowadays converted into multi-family and single-family housing. The paper deals with the analysis of the functional and aesthetic internal transformation of industrial into housing spaces. The research goal is to determine the principles of conceptualization of housing functional plan within the framework of the original physical structure of the industrial building, at the architectonic composition level and housing unit (dwelling) level. Besides, the paper aims to check the existence of common patterns of the aesthetic transformation of converted spaces, examined through three epochs of the development of industrial architecture: the second half of the XIX century, the first half of the XX century and the post-WWII period.

AbstractIndustrial buildings play a major role in sustainable development, producing and expending a significant amount of resources, energy and waste. Due to product individualization and accelerating technological advances in manufacturing, industrial buildings strive for highly flexible building structures to accommodate constantly evolving production processes. However, common sustainability assessment tools do not respect flexibility metrics and manufacturing and building design processes run sequentially, neglecting discipline-specific interaction, leading to inflexible solutions. In integrated industrial building design (IIBD), incorporating manufacturing and building disciplines simultaneously, design teams are faced with the choice of multiple conflicting criteria and complex design decisions, opening up a huge design space. To address these issues, this paper presents a parametric design process for efficient design space exploration in IIBD. A state-of-the-art survey and multiple case study are conducted to define four novel flexibility metrics and to develop a unified design space, respecting both building and manufacturing requirements. Based on these results, a parametric design process for automated structural optimization and quantitative flexibility assessment is developed, guiding the decision-making process towards increased sustainability. The proposed framework is tested on a pilot-project of a food and hygiene production, evaluating the design space representation and validating the flexibility metrics. Results confirmed the efficiency of the process that an evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm can be implemented in future research to enable multidisciplinary design optimization for flexible industrial building solutions.

Abstract Background The ageing of the European population leads to an increasing demand for Long-Term Care services. The security and well-being of the elderly population hosted in nursing homes (NHs) needs an effective Risk Management policy, officially sanctioned in Italy by the so-called “Legge Gelli” n.24 (March 8th, 2017) and the Directive 2011/24/EU on the application of patients' rights in cross-border healthcare. In order to verify the effective application of common “best practices” in terms of Risk Management in NHs, a tool useful to analyse risk management attitudes in Northern Italy was conceived and applied in a sample of NHs. Methods The tool, developed in collaboration with the health insurance company SHAM Italia, is composed of 124 items (with a dichotomous answer -YES/NO) on topics related to various Risk Management practices. This tool was submitted in a face-to-face interview to several Directors (Health Directors or Nursing Coordinators) of NHs in the Piedmont Region. A list of randomly-chosen NHs was contacted: 4 of them were selected for the pilot study and compiled the questionnaire. Answers were gathered and analyzed through Microsoft Excel. Results Only the 25% of NHs has a Risk Management plan with objectives and indicators of effectiveness and uses Risk Analysis instruments for a pre- and post-” risk detection. Only one has employees working mainly on Risk Management alone. The 75% of the reported events were “Adverse Events”, and all the NHs (100%) have a protocol for a patient voluntary departure or for fall prevention or for bedsores prevention; while 50% have a protocol for prevention of aggressions towards operators or for patients' suicide prevention. Conclusions This work provides a starting point to face new challenges that are looming on the European Health-care Systems: the care for the elderlies needs to be perfected to reduce inefficiencies, cut useless costs and improve safety of patients in the NHs setting. Key messages Despite safety of older patients in nursing homes is not only important but mandatory in Italy, risk management tools for this setting are lacking in literature. A new tool applied in Italian nursing homes showed that risk management needs to be implemented in practice and these results can be extended to European context.

Purpose Nascent firms and startups are often subject to challenges that their more mature counterparts can avoid. While cybersecurity is an issue that all firms contend with, it is especially challenging for new entrepreneurial ventures who lack the resources and capabilities of established firms. The purpose of this paper is to seek to delve deeper into the cybersecurity and risk management needs of small firms and startups. Design/methodology/approach Extant literature and available tools are explored to develop a usable framework applicable to small firms and new entrepreneurial ventures. Findings The liabilities of newness and smallness make entrepreneurial ventures a unique context in which to study the significance of cybersecurity and data privacy risk management. The authors offer an overview of issues and potential solutions relevant to entrepreneurial ventures. Research limitations/implications While offering practical insights, the work is a theoretical framework. The framework will enable researchers to develop more nuanced theory when it comes to cybersecurity and data privacy risk management. Practical implications The framework illustrates four distinct contexts for cybersecurity and risk management when it comes to the needs of small firms and startups. Adoption levels are explained, and small business operators and entrepreneurs can thus use the framework to determine the most appropriate approach for their enterprise. Originality/value The authors develop a framework illustrating adoption of different security and risk management practices by entrepreneurial ventures based on their specific needs and context. The authors thus offer practical solutions for startups and nascent firms regarding cybersecurity and privacy management.
