The thermal-hydraulic performance in a novel annular tube formed by outer straight and inner twisted oval tubes is numerically investigated. An annular tube formed by two straight oval tubes is also studied for comparison. Inner twisted oval tubes with different aspect ratios and twist ratios are studied. The heat transfer is well improved by the symmetrical secondary flow in the annulus. The Nusselt number generally increases when the inner oval tube becomes flatter and the twists stronger in the studied range of geometrical parameters. The largest Nusselt number Nu of the inner twisted tube increases by 116% while the friction factor f increases by only 46% compared with that of the inner straight tube, and the largest value of the thermal performance factor (JF) can be up to 1.9. Correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor are proposed for laminar and turbulent flows, and the deviations of the correlations are within ±5% and ±4% for Nu and f, respectively.

Various technologies have been developed to enhance flow mixing and heat transfer in order to develop an efficient compact heat exchanging devices. Vortex generators/turbulent promoters generate the vortices which reduce the boundary layer thickness and introduce the better mixing of the fluid to enhance the heat transfer. In this research experimental investigations have been carried out to study the effect of delta winglet vortex generator pairs on heat transfer and flow behavior. To generate longitudinal vortex flow, two pairs of the delta winglet vortex generators (DWVG) with the length of 10mm and winglet-pitch to tube-diameter ratio (PR = 4.8) are mounted on the inner wall of a circular tube. The DWVG pairs with two different winglet-height to tube-diameter ratios (Blockage ratio, BR = 0.1 and 0.2), three attack angles (α = 10°, 20°, 30°) and three spacings between leading edges (S = 10, 15 and 20mm) are studied. The experiments were conducted with DWVGs pairs for the air flow range of Reynolds numbers 5000–25000. The influence of the DWVGs on heat transfer and pressure drop was investigated in terms of the Nusselt number and friction factor. The experimental results indicate that DWVG pair in a tube results in a considerable enhancement in Nusselt number (Nu) with some pressure penalty. It is found that DWVG increases Nu up to 85% over the smooth tube. It is also observed that Nusselt number increases with Re, blockage ratio and attack angle. Friction factor decreases with Re but increases with blockage ratio, spacing and attack angle. And 30° DWVG pair with S = 20mm, BR = 0.2 gets the highest friction factor. The Highest thermal performance enhancement (TPE) was noticed for α = 10°, S = 20mm, BR = 0.2 for turbulent flows. To obtain qualitative information on the flow behavior and vortex structures, flow was visualized by laser sheet using smoke as a tracer supplied at the entrance of the test section. The generation and development of longitudinal vortices influenced by DWVG pairs were clearly observed.

Abstract Matrix cooling has opened new possibilities for enhancing the convective heat transfer coefficients without compromising upon the structural rigidity and the life of the gas turbine blade at elevated temperatures. However, the dense structure of the matrix significantly increases the flow resistance, and imposes the limitation to its usage. Recently, a matrix with a gap on the sidewalls called open matrix has been proposed by few researchers to reduce the associated pressure penalties. This detailed experimental investigation aims to study the open matrix channel flow, and presents the effects of varying sidewall gaps on heat transfer characteristics and friction factor in the open matrixes having rib angle 45o for three different sub-channel aspect ratios 1.2, 0.8, and 0.4. Liquid crystal thermography has been utilized to discern the detailed heat transfer characteristics. Results have been evaluated in terms of augmentation Nusselt number, friction factor ratio, and overall thermal performance factor over the Reynolds numbers 5800 -14000. The closed matrixes provided the highest augmentation in Nusselt number, and the gaps on the sidewall have shown an overall reduction in augmentation Nusselt number in most cases. However, the suitable sidewall gap showed the effective reduction in pressure penalties for the smaller sub-channel aspect ratios. The highest augmentation Nusselt number amongst the open matrixes has been found as 3.83 with a reduced friction factor ratio for the matrix with a 4 mm gap in sub-channel aspect ratio = 0.8 (i.e. 4 sub-channels) at Re = 8100.

In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulations with renormalization-group (RNG) k-ε model are performed for the air-side heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of wavy fin-and-tube heat exchanger with delta winglet vortex generators. The Reynolds number based on the tube outside diameter varies from 500 to 5000. The effects of different geometrical parameters with varying attack angle of delta winglet (β=30 deg, β=45 deg, and β=60 deg), tube row number (2–4), and wavy angle of the fin (θ=0–20 deg) are examined. The numerical results show that each delta winglet generates a downstream main vortex and a corner vortex. The longitudinal vortices are disrupted by the downstream wavy trough and only propagate a short distance along the main flow direction but the vortices greatly enhance the heat transfer in the wake region behind the tube. Nusselt number and friction factor both increase with the increase in the attack angle β, and the case of β=30 deg has the maximum value of j/f. The effects of the tube row number on Nusselt number and friction factor are very small, and the heat transfer and fluid flow become fully developed very quickly. The case of θ=5 deg has the minimum value of Nusselt number, while friction factor always increases with the increase in wavy angle. The application of delta winglet enhances the heat transfer performance of the wavy fin-and-tube heat exchanger with modest pressure drop penalty.

The forced convective heat transfer behavior of a turbulent air flow, steady and Newtonian over a fin and oval-tube heat exchanger has been examined numerically. Where, the effect of the tube tilt angle (α) on the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor was tested. The inclination angle of the oval-tubes going from 0° (Baseline case) to 90° with a step of 10°. The fluid flows and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.000 to 12.000. All investigations are carried out with the help of the CFD ANSYS Fluent. Heat transfer coefficient results in the term of the Nusselt number are validated with the available experimental data and a maximum deviation of 9 % is observed. Reasonable agreement is found. The obtained results show that the tube's inclination angle of 20° is the best design which significantly removes the hot spots behind the tubes, thus giving an increase in the heat transfer coefficient of 13 % compared to the baseline case. In addition, useful correlations are developed to predict Nusselt number and friction factor in the fin and oval-tube heat exchanger.

Abstract Matrix cooling is relatively newer cooling technique and preferred over the conventional rib turbulators or pin fin cooling due to its capacity to provide the structural rigidity and higher heat transfer enhancement. The present investigation addresses the detailed study of local and averaged heat transfer augmentation distributions within the sub-channels of matrixes with rib angle 35° and varying sub-channels aspect ratios using liquid crystal thermography. The effects of varying sub-channel aspect ratios 1.2, 0.8 and 0.4 on averaged Nusselt number augmentation, friction factor ratio and thermo-hydraulic performance factor have been also verified within the Reynolds numbers range 5800–14000. The flow trend within the sub-channels is typically found to be eccentric and attributed to the possible vortical flow within the sub-channels and this eccentricity reduces as the sub-channel aspect ratio decreases. Results have shown that the highest Nusselt number augmentation and the lowest friction factor ratio are obtained for the highest sub-channel aspect ratio i.e., the best thermo-hydraulic performance factor (≥ 1) has been found for sub-channel aspect ratio 1.2. The sub-channel aspect ratio is found to have significant effect on both Nusselt number augmentation and friction factor ratio as compared to Reynolds number.

Abstract The present paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of laminar flow of viscous oil through horizontal rectangular and square plain ducts and ducts inserted with full-length twisted tapes, short-length twisted tapes, and regularly spaced twisted-tape elements. Isothermal pressure drop measurements were taken in acrylic ducts. Heat transfer measurements were taken in electrically heated stainless-steel ducts imposing uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. The duct aspect ratios AR were 1, 0.5, and 0.333. The twist ratios of the twisted tapes were y=2.692, 5.385, 2.597, 5.193, 2.308, and 4.615. Short-length tapes were 0.9, 0.7, and 0.5 times the duct length. The space ratios were s=2.692, 5.385, 2.597, 5.193, 2.308, and 4.615. Both friction factor and Nusselt number increase with decreasing y and AR for AR⩽1 and increasing Re, Sw, and Pr. As the tape-length decreases, both friction factor and Nusselt number decrease. Friction factor increases as s decreases, and Nusselt number increases as s increases. Isothermal friction factor correlation and comprehensive Nusselt number correlation have been developed to predict data reasonably well in the entire range of parameters. Performance evaluation says that short-length twisted tapes are worse and regularly spaced twisted-tape elements are better than the full-length twisted tapes.

The current paper reports the results of numerical research on the magnetic Ni nanofluid flowing in a tube, developing turbulent flows under constant heat flux conditions. The numerical investigations are conducted for a Reynolds number range from 3,000 to 22,000, and a particle concentration range of 0% to 0.6%. The effects of the Reynolds number on the friction factor and Nusselt number are computed and compared satisfactorily with the experimental results of the literature. The classical correlations of Gnielinski, Notter – Rouse, and Pak and Cho are verified by predicting the Nusselt number of the Ni nanofluid. The obtained results revealed an enhancement in the heat transfer with the increase of magnetic Ni particle volume fraction and Reynolds number.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer in rectangular channel has an important significance in engineering. Conventional approach to caculate Nusselt number of rectangular channel approximately is to take the equivalent diameter as the characteristic length and use the classic circular channel turbulent heat transfer coefficient correlations. However, under these conditions, the caculation error of Nusselt number can reach to 14% and thus this approach can not substantially describe the variation of Nusselt number of rectangular cross-sections with different aspect ratios. Therefore, caculation by using equivalent diameter as the characteristic length in classic experiment formula needs to be corrected. Seven groups of rectangular channel models with different aspect ratios have been studied numerically in this paper. By using standard turbulence model, the flow and heat transfer law of air with varing properties has been studied in 4 different sets of conditions in Reynolds number. The simulation and experimental results are in good agreement. The simulation results show that with the increase of aspect ratio, the cross-sectional average Nusselt number increased, Nusselt number of circumferential wall distributed more evenly and the difference between the infinite plate channel and square channel went up to 25%. The effects of corner region and long\short sides on heat transfer have also been investigated in this paper. Results show that in rectangular channel, heat transfer in corner region is significantly weaker than it in other region. With the increase of aspect ratio, effect on the long side of heat transfer of the short side is gradually reduced, and then eventually eliminates completely in the infinite flat place. Based on the studies above, correction coefficient for rectangular channels with different aspect ratios has been proposed in this paper and the accuracy of the correction coefficient has been varified by numerical simulations. This can reflect the variation of Nusselt number under different aspect ratios more effectively and thus has current significance for project to calculate Nusselt number of heat transfer in rectangular channel.

In this research, the trapezoidal shaped chevron plate heat exchanger (PHE) is simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to determine its heat transfer capacity and friction factor. The PHE is modelled with chevron angles from 30° to 60°, and also the performances are compared with the plain PHE. The validation is done by comparing simulation result with published references using 30° trapezoidal chevron PHE. The Nusselt number and friction factor obtained from simulation model is plotted against different chevron angles. The Nusselt number and friction factor is also compared with available references, which some of the references used sinusoidal chevron PHE. The general pattern of Nusselt number and friction factor with increasing chevron angle agrees with the references. The heat transfer capacity found in current study is higher than the references used, and at the same time, the friction factor also increased. Besides this, it is also found that the counter flow configuration has better heat transfer capacity performance than the parallel flow configuration.
