This study aims to investigate the wake characteristics of a horizontal axis tidal stream turbine supported by a monopile using a numerical approach. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on the open source software OpenFOAM have been performed to enhance understanding of a turbine’s wake. The numerical simulations adopt both the actuator line method and the full rotor geometry method. The numerical results are found to be consistent with experimental data, although some discrepancies are observed at a distance of one rotor diameter downstream. Comparison of numerical results from both methods is performed. The results show that both methods can obtain important flow features and provide similar simulation in the wake of the turbine model. The actuator line method is able to give a better prediction in stream-wise velocity distribution, although it underestimates the turbulence intensity, circumferential velocity and vorticity magnitude slightly, compared with the full rotor geometry method. It is also found that the wake of the monopile and the rotor interact strongly in the downstream field, especially in the region immediately behind the structure. A strong interaction occurs within approximately two rotor diameters downstream.

For side channel machines, distinction is made between side channel pumps and peripheral pumps. The blade number of side channel machines has a large influence on the performance of the pump. This is known from several experimental studies. For industrial side channel pumps, the blade number is between 20 and 26, whereas for industrial peripheral pumps, the blade number is much larger (between 36 and 90). In this paper, the influence of the blade number on the performance and the inner flow phenomena of different pumps will be investigated experimentally and numerically. The inner flow of the pump is examined in detail by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Flow angles and velocities of the circulation flow between side channel and impeller are considered for different blade numbers. To explain the influences of the blade number, numerical results and theoretical formulas are combined. The experiments are carried out for two different modular side channel pump units, which differ in the side channel height h, the outer impeller diameter da, and the length of the blades l. So, the influence of the blade number can be studied in the context of other parameters like, for example, the relation between blade length and outer diameter of the pump. The obtained numerical results are compared with experimental data. Effects of the blade number on the performance curves of the pumps are shown by experimental and numerical results.

Air operations around naval vessels are inherently challenging and a major contributor to this is the turbulent airflow around the vessels, colloquially known as the airwake. To manage the risks associated with these unsteady airflows and to help define safe operating limits for the ship and the aircraft, the Royal Navy undertakes First of Class Flight Trials (FOCFTs). However, these trials inherently carry their own risks as well as being costly and time consuming. This paper discusses how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been used to de-risk flight trials and operations on the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) carriers. The simulations are shown to be in excellent agreement with full-scale LiDAR and anemometer measurements, which provides the requisite confidence to use them as a basis for de-risking. To de-risk the rotary wing FOCFTs, the turbulence approach parameter was defined as a proxy for pilot workload. It is shown that this parameter can be used to identify the wind conditions that are likely to be the most difficult for pilots, and to advise on changes to the approach paths that would reduce pilot workload. Test pilots were briefed with this airwake information prior to the FOCFTs, and the flow features identified in the CFD were found to be consistent with the pilots’ experiences. In the future this analysis could be used to reduce the time and cost associated with flight trials, manage through-life risks, and assess the impact of design decisions on the airwake during ship design. The work has also been used to de-risk F-35 trials and operations. In particular, the findings show that it may be possible to extend the operating envelope of the aircraft using a novel real-time system to predict airwake turbulence. In addition, CFD simulations were used to de-risk ondeck operations by ensuring that aircraft are within their exposure limits when tied-down. This information was used by the FOCFTs teams during rotary wing trials.

Abstract In this paper, the validity of the commonly used quasi-steady design approach to pressure relief valves (PRV) is examined by comparing detailed steady state conditions of valve behavior directly with transient conditions. To achieve this, a PRV conforming to ASME VIII standards was modelled using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package ANSYS FLUENT to account for transient fluid-structure interaction processes. Detailed steady state CFD simulations were conducted using quasi-steady assumptions and compared to high fidelity transient moving mesh simulations to allow the piston forces to be examined. The results indicated that noticeably different magnitudes can occur between steady state and transient simulations; highlighting the possibility of significant differences occurring between quasi steady designed valves and their ultimate performance. In this paper, a single operating condition is examined, using air at 10.3 barg, for a 5231BX refrigeration valve supplied by the Henry Group to highlight the main issues. Analysis has indicated that the differences in performance are generated by temporal, short lived vortices at the piston surface which influences the bulk flow features as the disc accelerates and decelerates; altering the net disc forces when compared to steady state conditions.

Radioembolization (RE) is a valuable treatment for liver cancer. It consists of administering radioactive microspheres by an intra-arterially placed catheter with the aim of lodging these microspheres, which are driven by the bloodstream, in the tumoral bed. Even though it is a safe treatment, some radiation-induced complications may arise. In trying to detect or solve the possible incidences that cause nontarget irradiation, simulating the particle- hemodynamics in hepatic arteries during RE by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools has become a valuable approach. This paper reviews the parameters that influence the outcome of RE and that have been studied via numerical simulations. In this numerical approach, the outcome of RE is regarded as successful if particles reach the artery branches that feed tumor-bearing liver segments. Up to 10 parameters have been reviewed. The variation of each parameter actually alters the hemodynamic pattern in the vicinities of the catheter tip and locally alters the incorporation of the particles into the bloodstream. Therefore, in general, the local influences of these parameters should result in global differences in terms of particle distribution in the hepatic artery branches. However, it has been observed that under some (qualitatively described) appropriate conditions where particles align with blood streamlines, the local influence resulting from a variation of a given parameter vanishes and no global differences are observed. Furthermore, the increasing number of CFD studies on RE suggests that numerical simulations have become an invaluable research tool in the study of RE.

Predicting building air change rates is a challenge for designers seeking to deal with natural ventilation, a more and more popular passive strategy. Among the methods available for this task, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) appears the most compelling, in ascending use. However, CFD simulations require a range of settings and skills that inhibit its wide application. With the primary goal of providing a pragmatic CFD application to promote wind-driven ventilation assessments at the design phase, this paper presents a study that investigates natural ventilation integrating 3D parametric modeling and CFD. From pre- to post-processing, the workflow addresses all simulation steps: geometry and weather definition, including incident wind directions, a model set up, control, results’ edition, and visualization. Both indoor air velocities and air change rates (ACH) were calculated within the procedure, which used a test house and air measurements as a reference. The study explores alternatives in the 3D design platform’s frame to display and compute ACH and parametrically generate surfaces where air velocities are computed. The paper also discusses the effectiveness of the reference building’s natural ventilation by analyzing the CFD outputs. The proposed approach assists the practical use of CFD by designers, providing detailed information about the numerical model, as well as enabling the means to generate the cases, visualize, and post-process the results.

With the combustion of solid fuels, emissions such as particulate matter are also formed, which have a negative impact on human health. Reducing their amount in the air can be achieved by optimizing the combustion process as well as the flue gas flow. This article aims to optimize the flue gas tract using separation baffles. This design can make it possible to capture particulate matter by using three baffles and prevent it from escaping into the air in the flue gas. The geometric parameters of the first baffle were changed twice more. The dependence of the flue gas flow on the baffles was first observed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and subsequently verified by the particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) method. Based on the CFD results, the most effective is setting 1 with the same boundary conditions as those during experimental PIV measurements. Setting 2 can capture 1.8% less particles and setting 3 can capture 0.6% less particles than setting 1. Based on the stoichiometric calculations, it would be possible to capture up to 62.3% of the particles in setting 1. The velocities comparison obtained from CFD and PIV confirmed the supposed character of the turbulent flow with vortexes appearing in the flue gas tract, despite some inaccuracies.
