To achieve substantial and sustainable levels of separation of municipal solid waste (MSW), it is essential to engage young people as they are important drivers of change and will have a major influence on the future of the world. This study aimed to understand Chinese high school students’ intention toward the separation of solid waste on campus (SSWC). The study has used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as its theoretical framework, and further incorporates two additional constructs (environmental education and environmental knowledge) to explain the separation of solid waste (SSW) behavior of 562 high school students. The results indicate that environmental education is essential to ensure that students have required knowledge and positive attitudes toward SSWC. Knowledge was the best predictor of high school students’ separation behavior. Moreover, a lack of subjective norm from the important people could prevent students from participating in this process, regardless of their positive attitudes. The implications for policy and scope for further research are discussed.


Chemistry Education as an instrument of environmental awareness aims to work on the importance of caring for the environment, seeking a better understanding and development of critical citizen thinking about the environmental problems that are getting worse every day. In this sense, it is necessary to approach environmental education at school, aiming to raise students' awareness. The study of environmental education in schools makes future generations develop more conscious, critical and sustainable thinking in relation to the paths taken that involve the environment and society in general. Thus, this work aims to present the importance of environmental education in the student's daily life and in the school environment, seeking to transmit how it can be an instrument for environmental awareness. In order to achieve the objective presented, it was necessary to develop some activities carried out in the classroom and outside of it, with a second-grade class from the State Elementary and High School located in the Nova Floresta city, Brazil. These activities were divided into five moments, which aimed to analyze knowledge about the generator theme: construction of concept maps in the classroom; preparation of pamphlets, addressing the correct way to dispose of garbage; field class at the city dump and requested a textual production activity; production of parodies, cartoons, comics and cordel; workshop for the production of objects with recyclable materials. According to the results obtained, it was observed the interest and commitment of the students to develop the activities and dedication on the theme, considering that, there was enthusiasm on the part of the students to carry out a certain deepening about the damages to the environment, as well as, the reuse of materials that alleviate the excess of accumulated garbage.

This research seeks relationship between Environmental Education and solid waste in the High School Miguel Grau from the Paramonga district, Barranca province. It is worth mentioning that a schedule was developed with the participation of the principal, students, teachers, administrative staff and APAFA. The general objective is to determine how environmental education influences students. During the development of the investigation, a sample of 30 students was taken and questions were asked about recycling, segregation, final disposal and care of the environment. It is a basic cross-sectional type and a descriptive-correlational  design was used. The data obtained were processed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Determining the answers to the questions that the majority throws the garbage in the classroom with 40%, throws it in the yard with 36.7%, there is no bin presence 96.6%, does not use a bin 96.6%, does not recycle the garbage 96.6%; in solid waste classification, the majority classify solid, liquid and gaseous 76.67%, organic and inorganic 76.7%, dangerous and non-dangerous with 83.3%, domiciliary with 50%; After learning about environmental care, the results were obtained from the cylinders to be taken to the landfill with 83.3% and organic waste with 50%; in environmental awareness, the majority throws in the cylinders with 66.7% and the presence of cans with 96.7%. What is interpreted that the student becomes aware in the care of the environment and recycles.

ResumoA poluição ambiental por resíduos sólidos constitui uma problemática ambiental na atualidade, necessitando de uma gestão adequada que estimule a criação de estratégias sustentáveis para minimizar esses impactos, como a inserção da coleta seletiva nos diversos espaços urbanos e na escola. O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento pró-ambiental de educandos do Ensino Médio público de Patos, Paraíba, quanto aos resíduos sólidos. Participaram da pesquisa um total de 352 alunos do Ensino Médio de duas escolas. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da aplicação de um questionário composto por 25 afirmativas no modelo da escala de Likert, cujos níveis de resposta variavam de 1 (concordo totalmente) a 5 (discordo totalmente) e mais três questões discursivas. Os resultados reportaram que os alunos consideram os resíduos sólidos como um grande problema ambiental, considerando que a reciclagem representa uma alternativa para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Estes afirmaram que a coleta seletiva deve ser implantada nas cidades brasileiras visando reduzir o volume de resíduos sólidos destinados aos lixões. Além disso, os alunos relataram que a Educação Ambiental deve estar inserida no ambiente escolar tanto na esfera pública quanto privada. As ações de Educação Ambiental desenvolvidas dentro do contexto escolar podem sensibilizar os alunos sobre a importância do uso consciente e descarte adequado dos resíduos sólidos, contribuindo para a sustentabilidade ambiental. AbstractEnvironmental pollution by solid waste is currently an environmental issue, requiring adequate management that encourages the creation of sustainable strategies to minimize these impacts, such as the insertion of selective collection in various urban spaces and at school. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pro-environmental behavior of public high school students in Patos, Paraíba, regarding solid waste. A total of 352 high school students from two schools participated in the study. The data were obtained through the application of a questionnaire composed of 25 affirmations in the model of the Likert scale whose levels of response varied from 1 (totally agree) to 5 (totally disagree) and three other discursive questions. The results reported that students consider solid waste as a major environmental problem, considering that recycling represents an alternative to Sustainable Development. These confirmed that selective collection should be implanted in Brazilian cities to reduce the volume of solid waste destined to dumps. In addition, students reported that Environmental Education should be embedded in the school environment in both the public and private spheres. The Environmental Education actions developed within the school context can raise the students' awareness regarding the importance of the conscious use and proper disposal of solid waste, contributing to environmental sustainability. RESUMOEste estudo tem como objetivo analisar o processo de coleta, tratamento, destinação final dos resíduos sólidos e a partir disso propor ações de educação ambiental em Água Grande, distrito de São Tomé e Príncipe (STP). O intuito é descrever as principais características que retratam a situação local. O estudo traz um levantamento teórico sobre poluição ambiental, resíduos sólidos urbanos e educação ambiental. Foi conduzida uma pesquisa qualitativa, com técnicas de análise documental e bibliográfica. Pôde-se verificar que o distrito de Água Grande carece de boas práticas para a coleta, separação, tratamento e a sua destinação final, englobando todos os processos de gerenciamento dos Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU). Nessa perspectiva, o estudo apresenta sugestão relacionada à educação ambiental desde a infância, de modo que exista um envolvimento integrado da gestão pública, sociedade civil e indústrias privadas. È stata condotta una ricerca qualitativa, utilizzando tecniche di analisi documentaria e bibliografica. È stato riscontrato che il distretto di Água Grande manca di buone pratiche per la raccolta, la separazione, il trattamento e la sua destinazione finale, che comprende tutti i processi di gestione dei rifiuti solidi urbani (RSU). In questa prospettiva, lo studio presenta un suggerimento relativo all'educazione ambientale fin dall'infanzia, in modo che ci sia un coinvolgimento integrato della gestione pubblica, della società civile e delle industrie private. This study aims to analyze the study of the application of environmental schools through adiwiyata school program in high school in district of East Lombok. This type of research is qualitative. The subjects of this study were principals, teachers, and students. Research took place at SMAN 1 Montonggading and SMAN 1 Sambelia. Technique of collecting data through interview, observation, and also documentation. Data analysis used was data reduction, data presentation (display data), and conclusion. The results of this study indicated that: (1) in the aspect of the school's environment-oriented School Policy, there is no policy from the local government that the school is eligible to be an environmentally sound school (adiwiyata). (2) on the aspect of environmental-based curriculum content at the school there is no specific subject of PLH. (3) on the aspect of participative participatory environmental protection activities, there are several activities that support the development of environmental activities in SMA of East Lombok district based on participative. (4) on the aspect of school management in environmental management, it is still not maximal, (5). in the aspect of obstacles to the application of environmentally sound schools is the lack of understanding and knowledge of school residents about environmental education, cost and community support. (6). in the aspect of policy priorities that emerged in the changes is expected to analyze the obstacles in implementing environmental schools through the program of school adiwiyata through planning of learning tools by teachers compiled into the subjects of geography by integrating the maximum environmental values, the School makes environmental education as a optional subject, Development of geography teacher's knowledge and skills in collaboration with environmental agencies on environmental schools, and given understanding to the public about the importance of environmental education.
