This article focuses on the ways in which, after its successful bid to host the ‘mega event’ of World Cup 2022, Qatar is branded as a sports tourism destination in the online semioscape and linguascape of sports events. The promotional multimodal digital material that Qatar has already released to launch its ambitious sports-related projects in both its English and Arabic versions is analysed from a critical perspective of multimodal discourse analysis and social semiotics, focusing on image making. This includes the strategic use of symbolic and material markers that construct Qatar as a distinctive destination offering its visitors high quality sports while also being good value for money as it brings the world to its visitors through sports, inter alia. Finally, the argument put forward is that Qatar constructs a politically appealing and distinctive campaign, oscillating between tradition-driven utopia and the remarkably transformed modern landscape of the country.

Abstract: In this study, the researchers sought to understand the effects perceived value and innovation have on the propensity of university students to use sports tourism websites. This study also examined the moderating roles of age and education on this usage. University students (N = 354; 292 women and 62 men) from a public university in Malaysia were surveyed for this study. The findings revealed that perceived value and innovation significantly influence the propensity to use sports tourism websites among university students. The results also showed that both age and education significantly moderated their purposed associations. The findings of this study offer sports website managers, as well as policymakers in sports organizations, an insight that will aid in the development of effective online strategies to attract young users to engage with sports tourism websites. This study also informs managers and researchers about the importance of age and education when considering the relationship between predictors and the propensity of users to use sports tourism websites. Keywords: Propensity to use websites, tourism, sports events, personal characteristics, perceived benefits, innovation.

Despite many sports tourism events have been organized globally yet the understanding about the event greening practices is reasonably low. Hence, the impact of the sports event towards the environment and the communities are exceptionally high. For the purpose of this paper, some academic and consultancy-based literature on management and organization of sports tourism events in relation to green growth were reviewed. This conceptual paper focuses on the conceptualization and implementation of green sports events which covers the theory and principles of green practices, strategies and implementation of green practices in the case of selected Olympic Games, issues and challenges, and the roles of stakeholders.  In addition, the critical insight from the literature also provides some “green” suggestions to be considered by sports tourism event organisers.

Sports volunteering as a social phenomenon attracts the attention of the world’s leading researchers in the field of sociology, psychology, and economics. Despite the large number of publications, research interest in the problems of sports volunteers is manifested periodically and, as a rule, precedes any specific sports event of an international or national level. The holding of the largest international competitions on the territory of Russia and the state interest in volunteering will determine the need for national and comparative research in the field of sports volunteering and the management of this type of activity. The aim of the work is to determine the place of sports volunteering in modern research on the basis of bibliometric analysis of publication data. The empirical research was carried out on the basis of the Scopus database in three stages: selection of documents by keywords, introduction of time frames (2005-2020) and selection of publications corresponding to the types of “article” and “scientific review”. The final sample consisted of 329 documents, which were analyzed in detail in the VOSviewer program (version 1.6.15). The authors identify the leaders of this research direction among specific organizations and countries. We analyzed the most cited publications on the topic of sports volunteering in the context of management. The authors identified thematic areas and their chronology in research, building a mental map of the most common terms. The results obtained make it possible to determine the degree of study of the phenomenon under consideration, to identify problem areas and promising directions in the study of sports volunteering. The problematic field of sports volunteering research is analyzed in the article from the managerial aspect. This formulation of the problem makes it possible to evaluate the scientific discourse of sports volunteering management at different levels: from interaction in a separate organization to the analysis of the practices of international and national management of the organization of sports events.

The development of sports tourism is gaining momentum around the world, with many tourism industries combining sports events and programs to attract more domestic and overseas customers to promote economic and culture. Sustainability awareness has been gaining attention from many international organizations, resulting in the rise of sports tourism that incorporates sustainability. Therefore, the development of a valid and applicable sustainable sports tourism (SST) assessment model is an important task. In this study, a hybrid Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) model is proposed to measure the development performance of SST. The aims of this study include developing a SST assessment framework, identifying the mutual influential relationships among attributes, generating attribute influence weights, and calculating the performance of the evaluated items. The proposed model is divided into three stages. First, a cause-and-effect diagram is generated using the Grey Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (GDEMATEL) to describe the interactions and feedback among the attributes. Then, the GDEMATEL-based Analytic Network Process (GDANP) is applied to generate the influence weights of the attributes and their rankings. Finally, the expanded Probability-based Grey Relational Analysis (expanded PGRA) was applied to calculate the performance of the evaluated items and to determine the gap between evaluated items and the aspiration level. This study improves the original PGRA technique by introducing the concept of aspiration level into the PGRA calculation process, thereby replacing the traditional concept of “relative satisfaction” with “aspiration level”. In addition, the expanded PGRA can assess a single rated item without being limited to at least two items. We used the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area in Taiwan as a model demonstration. The results show that the top three attributes that need to be strengthened are disease prevention and treatment, local social welfare and protection, and sports diversity. In the Sun Moon Lake, intersection control should be set up to ensure the health status of visitors and local residents. In addition to epidemic prevention, more measures and behaviors should be developed to deal with tourism diseases. We suggested that subsidies be provided to local residents to rebuild the fences around their homes to avoid disturbances caused by the influx of tourists. Moreover, the local government can create more sports events with special characteristics that can attract tourists to come again and again.

The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of online retailer models on Indian consumer’s attitude towards retail websites and their purchase intentions. Using an online shopping scenario, a case study was conducted on 240 postgraduate marketing students at an Indian university to evaluate the effects of two online shopping website factors on the user’s attitude towards retail websites and their purchase intentions. The findings of the study suggest that players in the e-tailing business should increasingly move towards multi category purchase model to increase the purchase intentions of the consumers. They also need to constantly review and upgrade the services offered to ensure increased intentions to purchase. The findings can enable online retailers in India to explore and shape the Internet as the next big business opportunity.

This study investigates differences in motives, event attributes, and information sources, which influenced sport tourists’ decision and attendance at the Sepak Takraw event in Malaysia. Data were collected from 224 domestic sports tourists and 92 foreign sports tourists. Findings show that domestic and foreign sports tourists significantly differed in their motives and preferred event attributes. Domestic sports tourists indicate using mass communication items in their decision making to attend the event. Social networking was the most important information source for foreign sports tourists. Practical implications for local sports tourism marketers within small-scale sports events in Malaysia are discussed.
